[TitleTK@aol.com] Re: support-system-digest V6 #86 [Lisa Rosenthal Subject: Good Liz/Bad Liz Conundrum I completely agree with James and Robert. There seems to be this huge divide now. People keep framing this argument in terms of "mainstream vs. alternative" or "staying the same vs. growth" or "indie vs. matrix." That's not the issue for me here. It's simply "good music" vs. "bad music." The more I listen to this album, the more I realize I only like about 4 songs on it. I think the real difference here is that Liz used to write songs for herself, in her bedroom. Now she's writing for the 12-16 year old age demographic (who, by the way, aren't the only ones out there with disposable income). The matrix produced songs are just incredibly unoriginal. I remember her saying that her really good songs seemed to come out of her really fast, from out of nowhere. These sound forced and so worked over that there's nothing left. There is no cohesiveness to it either. The great majority of lyrics on this album do not make the wheels turn in my head, although they can be sort of funny. But I don't want to just be amused. I want to be challenged. Remember that big discussion on this list a few months ago about the meaning of Nashville? That won't happen with this album. What is even more depressing is that Liz seems to think this is the only way to sell records. There are other ways. I still love her, and I tried to give this album a fair chance. But I'm not going to love it just because I loved her previous work. I will blindly follow her only so far. Yahoo! Go check it out here: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/updates.html I had mentioned to Ken on IRC the other night that I was pretty sure Michael Penn had produced "It's Sweet," so I'm glad to see my hunch was correct. To me, it's one of the most sonically interesting tracks on the record and it sort of has the same feel (but not sound) of Penn's own "Like Egypt Was" in parts. I was kind of surprised to see that "Red Light Fever" was produced by Penn as well. My guess is that it was the fourth of the Matrix tracks, but it turns out that would be "Favorite" instead. I believe someone posted yesterday that the album is somewhat 'unmemorable' and i think that is about the way that i would describe it too. its good, but to me, its not quite on par with her other stuff. it just pales in comparison to some of her other work. that doesnt mean that i dont like it though, i do. I am especially fond of 'scared', 'why can't i', 'rock me' and 'firewalker'. the song i like the least is definitely 'my mother is mine'. the tune is fine, but i just find the lyrics annoying. i feel kinda bad about that because the lyrics seem incredibly personal, but its just not for me. oh well. anywho, just wanted to chime in on my thoughts on the album, and i also wanted to give liz a shout out and tell her the songs that i would most like to hear her sing on tour. go speed racer - this song is soo much fun to sing along to,just love it fuck and run - always was and always will be my fav and perfect world - just cause ok, so thats my 2 cents, back to lurking jenny ps - going to post lyrics to new album @ liz-phair.com soon, also working on a re-design to the site, so keep an eye out. =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 07:46:32 -0500 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: Bitter Cheese What song did Weezer write about Liz? - -----Original Message----- From: TitleTK@aol.com [mailto:TitleTK@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 2:28 PM To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: RE: Bitter Cheese Dear Liz, Ah, Liz, if only you cared about how revolutionary you once were. I know you like Sheryl Crow . . . so do I . . . but you don't have to sound like her. I still remember listening to EIG for the first time in my college dorm room at the University of Chicago. I bought it the first day it came out. I saw you perform those first wobbly concerts. You weren't very good. But somehow you were the voice of all us urbanites trying to brave the cold of the city. The first time I heard your voice I cringed, and now I cringe a second time. Do you know how loved you once were? You were idolized by every indie boy band. Weezer even wrote a song about you. You didn't sounds like anyone or anything. Your songs were bloody, grotesque, ironic, and profoundly sexual. They made me want to throw someone against the walls and make love to them in every position possible. Your music is now oh so missionary. Remember those outfits you used to wear to concerts? Those tight little numbers that clinged to your skin and made you look so classy? I'm sorry, but this "little lolita" look just isn't you. I hate to say that you were a feminist before, but you were, you didn't use sex to lure men in, you used sex for your own pleasure, and thus became easily jealous, hurt and angry as evidenced in your music. People are going to love your new music, Liz. You many even have a hot new single. But you are no longer in a league with the greats. Oh, we'll still have the old stuff to remind us, but it won't be quite the same. I suppose I'm pathetic to care so much, but anyone that truly loved and bonded with your first three albums knows that the past ten years have been a relationship with you and your audience. I suppose that relationship is over now. Your music doesn't speak for itself so we listen to interviews with you and you tell us what you think -- instead of hearing it from your guitar . . . I miss your guitar. But Liz, I've annoyed these poor list members enough. You have a whole new audience to entertain now and I'm sure you'll be fantastic as a "rock star." Your fantastic at everything you do. But as I walk the streets of Chicago now, your voice isn't as clear as it once was. Thank you for giving me some of the greatest pleasures of my life through your music. I guess I'll have to figure out the next 10 years without you. james ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 07:50:52 -0500 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: Tour Dates? When I first saw it I thought "typical Liz" the color matching is just awesome. Reminds me of an 80s girl (which is the decade which Liz grew up) with that little cotton pink mini skirt. Her pose is vintage Liz so I don't know what ya'll are talking about. Hey, I've been a Liz fan since EIG. Still love that album soooooooooo much and Whip Smart too. I don't really care for WCSE. I just don't feel that she put 100 percent into it for some reason. This new Liz sound, on my first listen I wasn't really sure, cringed at "Why Can't I" (sounded too avrilesque) but now, I just think it is amazing and "Why Can't I" is too cool. I think the person who labeled her new songs embarrassing needs to unattach herself from Liz Phair. Why would you be embarrassed? You're not the one who wrote the songs. Liz, if you're listening, some of your old fans (literally and figuratively) have grown up with you and can still appreciate your candor in your songs and all of the quirky sounds that you put into the background of your music. Each time I give a listen, (regardless of whatever album it is) I always fall more into it because there is always something new that I discover in each song. Don't mean to sound bitchy. Maybe it's just me. I'm just not the same person I was when EIG came out and I agree that if Liz still played the same way she did back then, I'd probably be totally burnt out on her, but her ability to reinvent herself (but keep to her old way of creating music and writing) is what makes me keep coming back for more. funny, I've seen more copies of EIG in the used section of Fingerprints in L.B. CA lately more than ever. My point is that people change. We've all changed. What we liked when we were 23 we don't like when we are 33. That's the Weston song "Liz Phair." I, too, downloaded it from Napster back in the day, but I thought it was Liz's "Go West" mislabled "Weston." :) It's a fun song. Speaking of songs about Liz, does anyone know anything about the Local H song "Chicago Fanphair '93"? The spelling of 'fanfare' and the 1993 date (the year EIG was released) makes me suspect it has something to do with Liz. Also, both Liz and Local H are from the Chicago area, and current/former (not sure which) band member Brian St. Clair worked with Liz, according to a band bio I read. The song was released on 1995's "Ham Fisted." Any insights? Can anyone explain to me if there is a way to do such a thing from real player or windows, or if there is somewhere i can get the songs from. Thanks so much. I thought everyone might need a refresher. Here are some quotes from Ken's interview with Liz. Liz " The Matrix songs are great, mainstreamy, but really exceptional as such. I need to get on the radio. It's oviously different than my own quirky stuff, but we've amazed the label with afour for four hit type factor." "Inside the game of the music business, I've turned my fate around with these tracks and I'm poised for a nice ride. Which is important to me. A huge part of my motivation in any endevor, is ignoring, if not down right spitting in the face of, the words "NO YOU CAN'T". I'm just rebelious. I hate that they say I can't get on the radio. I hate that those suited executives look at me and think, "Art Piece. Hang it on the wall. can't do anything else with it." You might understand that the music industry is jusst another Guyville and I want to take it down. Or sit on top of it. It's just my nature. " I write songs all the time, and in their nascent form, are quite possible more brilliant, especially to all my brainiac fans out there that don't need there art pre-digested.(I think that discibes some of us pretty well.) Release date for the Professional album is blah blah." " I don't know what else to tell you, but if you can stand to move a few feet closer to center, I promise the album rocks. And if you can't than have a laugh and wait for the demo material to trickle out. It's only music. You don't have cancer. I write for me. It fulfills my need to speak, to be understood. And if I change and you don't like it I can't help you. Because only when I'm traveling in my life, when I feel like I'm transforming, or having some adventure, will music come flooding out of me. Friction, Baby! " I've been a hard core fan from the begining. As a fan I have to support her. She's set goals for herself. She wants to be on the radio, she wants to conquer the music industry. It's a game for her. I say more power to her, let it happen so she can get back to doing what she wants to do. Phrases like, "professional album, brainiac fans, obviously different than my own quirky stuff," are all I need to hear to let me know she's still in there. Ok after all that I'll just say, I love Bionic Eyes, HWC, In Love With Me. I don't count the radio tunes, we all know which ones they are. The rest are ok. I can't wait to hear what she writes after this adventure. Sorry it was so long. And thanks for reading if you read it! Lorelei Yahoo! ANYWAY, i think i saw that someone had posted the lyrics to the new songs . . . can you pass them on to me so i can know the right words to sing? thanks. :) *n*m*e* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 00:08:42 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: Re: Liz said . . . Lorelei, I just wanted to say thanks for your email. It was great to see all of those Liz quotes in one place. I understand Liz wanting to get on the radio. But I still don't understand why she feels she must conform to do so. Can't she do it on her own terms? I still hold Kim Deal up with her Cannonball single . . . it's so radio-friendly, and so Kim Deal at the same time. I think Liz is a good enough songwriter to write something extremely different that people will want to hear. james ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 21:12:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Lisa Rosenthal Subject: Re: support-system-digest V6 #86 Dear Andrea, Change can be good or bad. An example of a good change: getting smarter. An example of bad change: getting stupider. Plenty of artists change and evolve and I love it. A great example is REM. Old REM will always be my favorite, but I also love Up, which couldn't have been more different from their original sound. (I didn't like Reveal so much, but that's not the point.) Another example, probably a more controversial one, is Hole. Even if a lot of people loathe it, I love Celebrity Skin just as much as I love Live Through This, and those two albums are so far from each other. Anyway, the whole argument that people are just hating on Liz because we want her to make the same thing over and over is just misdirection. I don't want Liz to make Exile in Guyville again. I want her to make something GOOD; I want her to make something SMART. I don't know about the rest of the album, but these three songs are not good or smart, in my book. My only solace is that I'm guessing that she had very little to do with writing them. As for the clothes, sure, maybe it's totally shallow, but shallowness and celebrity appreciation go hand in hand. those CBGBs shirts are so annoying -- they're such desperate shorthand for PUNK CRED, when actually what they really signify is HOT TOPIC. and since when does liz phair have a shortage of punk cred, anyway? yeah, i know it's totally silly, and I'm not trying to make too big of a deal over it, but I definitely wouldn't care if the music was actually decent. I have to admit though, I ALMOST like the weird backpack straps thingies or whatever, despite the fact that they're totally superflous. She really sounds - and looks - like an Avril wannabe. Hopefully for her, that was the right step to earn shitloads of money. It's kind of sad to see your favorite artists stumble and fall. My fave of the 80s, Prince, became extremely horrible the following decade. I just hope that my favorite artist of the 90s, you know her, will not suffer the same fate.
