It helps me sleep a little easier at night knowing that other people think it is okay, and that probably nothing will happen to me. Since everybody out there already knows what I am doing, and I'm already risking the 3-5 years in jail and the $250,000 fine, I thought I'd just explain my position, to clear up any confusion. I'm not making a dime from this. No money whatsoever is exchanging hands. Not that that makes it right, but I did want to try to stop the ebay guy from cashing in on this. I am a fairly new list person, I joined only about 3 years ago. I know that people on this list have done this type of thing before, and I admire the cooperation and community that (most) listers seem to promote. I think that we are all equals on this list. Some people may have "insider" jobs or connections, and maybe they do "deserve" to listen to it before the rest of us. But we've all been in the same prison for the last five years, all going through the same withdrawal. I didn't think it was fair that some people got to break out of that prison first (cue whistle theme from "The Great Escape") and leave the others behind. It's been a long wait. And three more months does make a big difference. Especially when you have to read other people's reviews, as someone mentioned. After hearing the Sound Opinions radio show's bit on Liz, I began to get a little worried. Liz is taking a huge risk by moving in this new musical direction. I have an inkling that she is going to get slammed by the critics. Critics get promo CDs and they do whatever they want with them and say whatever they want about her. We get them, and chances are that we will love it and tell other people that we love it. It really made me think when I heard that Liz turned down an interview with the Sound Opinions guys and accepted to do multiple interviews with Ken Lee, especially since she has a history of not keeping in touch with her fans. I think she knows that critics won't be on her side this time, but the fans will be. If I thought that this project would hurt Liz, her career, or her finances in any way, obviously I wouldn't do it. The logic about this has been explained more than adequately by other people, so I won't go into it. If anyone is curious, so far it is a very tiny project, to my great relief. I am truly sorry that this has caused so much controversy. I wasn't expecting it to be such a big deal. I think there are more than enough flames and hysteria on this list, and I had hoped that this would bring people together (it has in a way), especially in preparation for this summer- I am hoping that people on the list will get together at shows, etc. I have never been to a Liz show and am planning on going to as many as I can (another justification- I know I will be dumping PLENTY of money into Liz's pockets this summer) if I'm not incarcerated by then, and I am looking forward to meeting people that regularly appear in my inbox every day. There are millions of other reasons why I am doing this, but those are the big ones. So that's where I stand. Some of us take risks and some of us don't. I am willing to take this risk regardless of the "consequences." And in conclusion, here's a little quote from my favorite movie.... Hilts: Wait a Minute! You aren't seriously suggesting that if I get through the wire and case everything out there, and *don't* get picked up; to turn myself in and get thrown back in the cooler for a couple of months just so you can get the information you need? There are few Liz songs that I'm not completely in love with, and I can't think of any I flat-out don't like at all. The closest would be "Take a Look", I guess. I'm not really a huge fan of "Don't Apologize", though; and, yeah, I'm mostly indifferent to "X-Ray Man". That's pretty much it, though. Also, seriously, "Don't Have Time". Maybe my favorite Liz song. If she sings some stuff from Girlysound, I'd really love to hear "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into". It's so much fun. Maybe "One Less Thing" and "Sometimes a Dream (Is What Makes You a Slave)" as well. I'm thinking about it, and I think it would just be flat-out cool to hear any of the Girlysound songs that never hit the studio. "Dead Shark"? I'm not sure how "Go West" would work live or if she's performed it very often in the past; but seeing what she did with "Support System", I'd be interested. "Russian Girl" would be such a cool song to hear in concert. I'd love to hear "Hurricane Cindy" but I don't really know if that would even really work. It's so weird. And she has to do "May Queen", too. She just has to. Anyway, my big requests: "Don't Have Time", "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into", "Go West", "Russian Girl", and "May Queen". - -Mark _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2003 03:43:15 -0400 From: Jase Subject: Another thing about guitar tabs... I'm hoping to have the new version of the site completed by the middle of the month. I'll post the new URL then. Also, at that time, I'd like everyone to pass along the names of any radio stations they know have played Liz's music in the past, along with any contact info (e-mail addresses, URLs, etc.). I'd like to have a list of links people can use to request "Why Can't I" when it goes to radio stations at the end of the month. The song sounds to me like it will be a surefire hit, but it wouldn't hurt to help get the ball rolling. Ken, once such a list is compiled, would you like to post it at Mesmerizing as well? Ive been listening to it for about 2 days straight and I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the album. So Ill just get into my song by song review! Extraordinary The perfect way to start off the album. Great opening guitar riff and by far the heaviest riff to appear on a Liz Phair album. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. The bridge/chorus has this unique feeling that is hard to describe and that I love. Red Light Fever To be honest, the first time I heard this song I wasnt really into it. However, the more I heard it the more I began to like it. Its not one of my favorites, but its still a good song. Why Can't I? For some reason a lot of people dogged this song and I cant understand why. I love the drum beat and the acoustic guitar intro. Then when the chorus hits it takes it to a whole new level. One of my top favorites from the album. Its Sweet Not one of my favorites. The intro kind of throws me off and whole song is just kind of there. The one thing I do like about the song is the vocals. Not a bad song, but not great either. Maybe it will grow on me. Rock Me What I heard from this song was totally not what I was expecting. I was expecting a real rocker in the Russian Girl vein. I do like the playfulness of the lyrics. Musically its not one of my favorites though. Take A Look Ive heard this song a hundred times since someone posted it to the list and I really started to dig it the more I listened to it. This version seems a lot tighter and I like it alot. Little Digger An absolute Liz classic and beautiful piece of music. Everything about this song is great and it is a great homage to her son. Probably my favorite along with Hot White Cum. Firewalker I love the intro they added to this song and the song itself is a classic. Better than the live version, especially her vocals. Great song. Favorite At first I wasnt much into this song, but now I like it a lot. Another great playfull song that Liz shows she still has the same sense of humor that made Girlysounds so great. Love/Hate I like this song so much better than the original version. A lot of people miss the original chorus, but I am not one of those people. H.W.C. Another classic. Like I said earlier its probably tied for my favorite song on the album along with Little Digger. By far the catchiest song on the album and the song youd most want to sing along to, even with the lyrics (which I think are great). Again, Liz shows the same type of humor that she had on Girlysounds. The harmonica is a great touch. Bionic Eyes Sounds like it belongs on an Austin Powers soundtrack, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Great track that sounds just like a lot of 1960s psychedelia music that I love. Partly reminds me of the Doors and Stones at their psychedelic best. Friend of Mine I love this track. It sounds JUST like something off of Tom Pettys Wildflowers album. One of the albums best songs. Good Love Never Dies (Alternate Mix) Another track I love and a perfect album closer. Great lyrics on this one that mean alotm to me. Overall I have to say that I love the album. One of Lizs best in my opinion. I think that most people/critics put WAY too much emphasis on the fact that she worked with The Matrix. If I would not have known that, I would have had no idea that she did anything of the sort. And really, it made no difference to me whatsoever knowing. If this is Lizs new direction then I totally support it. My ranking of the songs in the order that I like them: 1. H.W.C./ Little Digger (tie) 2. Why Can't I? 3. Extraordinary 4. Friend of Mine 5. Good Love Never Dies (Alternate Mix) 6. Firewalker 7. Bionic Eyes 8. Love/Hate 9. Take A Look 10. Favorite 11. Red Light Fever 12. Rock Me 13. It's Sweet I can't wait to hear these songs live!! But the new Lucinda Williams album World Without Tears was just released today and it's just plain awesome. 'why can't i' is better yet. of the 3, it's my clear favorite, for the lyrics, the arrangement, the vocals, and that moment when the instruments mostly stop like on the clash's safe european home. 'rock me' don't impress me much. not 'bad', so much as 'ehhh'. it's an encouraging selection, though. i do like the heavy production (next time just let todd rundgren produce the damn thing) and the way they've pushed liz's voice up front. stronger, more confident, but maybe less confidential, which is a bit of a loss. but overall, i think it's a good introduction and not as dire as some people were predicting. so i'll wait and hear the rest of them when they're made available with the writer's blessing. christ, i've waited this long for some sign of life or evidence of any effort at all, i can wait another couple of months. i'm still pissed it took 5 years, and i said months and months ago that i wouldn't buy a 'new' copy because it took so fucking long to put this out. i may still stick to my worthless guns and only buy a used copy, but, honestly, i'm guessing i'll break down and decide not to wait and grab a new one and just go through life being pissed off that anyone can take this goddam long to make a goddam album and still get my goddam money into their goddam pocket. and i don't *even* want to talk about the pictures on lp.com... on a side note, evandando.com does it up right and streams out the entire new album. am i the only one who finds it astonishing that evan dando went through heroin addiction, fist fights, an alcohol-infested solo acoustic tour of the smallest venues in the history of the united states (where the announcer at evan's nyc show was heard to loud-speak, between slurred songs, "Management requests that all waitresses STOP delivering drinks to the performer on stage!"), getting married, moving part-time each year to australia, buying a loft 2 blocks from the world trade center just months before its destruction, losing all label affiliations, and basically becoming a brilliant has-been, and he's STILL going to get his album out before liz and capitol get around to releasing her's! it's diabolical! but i'm *completely* pleased to see that he has a new studio recording coming out, and that it includes 'the same thing'. o well ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #85 ***********************************
