As I'm rubbing my head and with my two dogs (Lucy and Linus) pointing and laughing at me, I realize that it is the new Liz Phair album with the title Happy Tragic Thing. I then rush home draggin my two pooches and put it in my cd player. First impression is that it is good (a little avrilesque in some of the songs specifically Why Can't I?) but some real cool jamming songs too. Now that I have given it a spin around my cd player, in the car and at home and on my head phones and at work, non-stop since the God's dropped it into my hands, er, on my head, I think it is absolutely BRILLIANT and vintage Liz Phair but with a totally different sound. Does that not make sense? I don't know how to explain it but I guess if Liz Phair is gonna go mainstream this is what I expected she would sound like. Some vintage Liz sounds and rythms come through in some of the songs. I won't go into detail because ya'll will have your own thoughts and opins on each song but LIZ and CAPITOL if you are reading this PLEASE MAKE EXTRAORDINARY the first SINGLE. That song is soooooooo awesome. I mean Why Can't I is growing on me but EXTRAORDINARY is just tooooo cooool!!!!! I can't see EXTRAORDINARY following Why Can't I? as a single. I just can't. It doesn't feel right at all. EXTRAORDINARY doesn't sound like anything on the radio but it definitely has the "HIT" feel to it. Why Can't I? does too but it also sounds like everything out there right now. LIZ, put it this way, EXTRAORDINARY is like one big splash into the pool of mainstream. All of the other songs are just the ripples that will feed off of it. Some real cool songs, Bionic Eyes, White Hot Cum, Firewalker, You're in Love With Me, Rock Me, etc. I don't mind pop/mainstream music as long as the lyrics aren't too cheezy and forced. I don't feel that way with this album. Vintage Liz Phair songwriting but in a total new and different sound!!!! Way to go Liz. Great job!!!!!!! Thanks to the God(s) who dropped this onto my big fat head! :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 06:45:25 -0600 From: "Brooke, Robert" Subject: New CD and Girlysounds I also have not heard or have the new cd. "Girls Room" tacked on at the end didn't really do it for me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 15:53:46 EST From: LULU428@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V6 #79 i just read in timeout ny that liz phair will be performing in this 2 day "music and camping" festival that is at Calverton Enterprise Park which is 9 miles west of Riverhead, Long Island on June 7-8. it will be headlined by Radiohead and Beastie Boys. I don't think it's her best since Exile (does anybody really think these songs top May Queen, or Go West? Or Support System? Uh, no). I've been trying very hard to keep an open mind. That said, I'll give a little review. Extraordinary is the better of the uber-produced pop songs. It's pretty forceful and there's some emotion behind it. I like that. Scared is way too long. (if your going to have a song be longer than 3 and half minutes, it better be damn good) It's ok, but kind of depressing. Why Can't I is utterly forgettable to me. It just sounds like it could be by anybody on the radio. ("It's just like we were meant to be"? What is this, 7th grade?) I find it hilarious that when she sings, "Isn't this the best part of breaking up," I expect the next line to be, "Finding someone else you really want to fuck." So I'll just sing that. I think it's terrible, but maybe some 13 year old will really love it. I'll be hitting the skip button on this one. I really like You're in love with me, especially the intro. It's different and cool and the music is actually really good. I dig. Rock me. Hmm. It encapsulates how I feel about this new album. Good lyrics...generic music. I really hate the Babybabybaby part. Take a Look, we've all heard it before. Bland to me. My Mother is Mine- someone said it doesn't fit with the rest of the album, and I agree, but I think it's a really good song anyway. Very personal, obviously. Firewalker. I like the live version better, just because she seemed to be singing with a lot more oomph. In this version, she sounds kind of bored and like she's holding back. Still a great song though and I love the intro, even though it doesn't seem to fit with the song. I wish she would pick up the tempo or something. Again, My Favorite Underwear has great lyrics and cheesy, generic radio music. I'm beginning to wonder if she wrote these great songs and the matrix or whoever took over and changed the music a lot but kept the lyrics. It's a War- Still like the old version better. I do like the lyrics (never could understand the old lyrics). I wish she had kept the music exactly the same as the original. Hot White Cum is the best song on the album, hands down. Real music, although its cute and hand-clappy. I keep wondering about that cum/happiness medical study. Is she sarcastic or does she really believe it? Hard to tell. I love the harmonica, it gives me hope for the Liz Phair future. I hope to hell this song is ultracontroversial. I can imagine the feminists duking it out over this one. Bionic eyes is pretty good. I like the lyrics a lot. One thing I love about Liz is her unabashed confidence about her sexuality and whatnot. She knows everybody wants her and loves to roll her eyes at the whole thing. Friend of Mine and Let the Night Come I am still kind of undecided on. They're good but not wonderful. So overall... I don't know. I am really surprised Don't Apologize didn't make it on. If any song she's written in the last few years "rocks," it's that one in my opinion. Thank god the live version is really good. And what about conversation overheard between two bouncers? arg. People have said they like her voice better, but it often seems so radio-generic-american idol or something. I guess I prefer the warbles. They were real and honest. My biggest hope for the album, though, is that some unsuspecting 14 year old will go into a record store and accidentally buy Exile. That would make it all worthwhile. She needs to rope in those youngin's. Kate Yahoo!
