Alan Doak" Subject: Another Review OK. I've had the weekend to listen to the album, and I think that Liz got what she was looking for. The album rocks, and it's smart. Where there seemed to be large changes in the feel of the albums from EIG to WS and then again from WS to WCSE, the change from WCSE to LP seems to be be smaller. The album has a richer, fuller sound to it, but I think the largest changes are Liz's vocals and the songs from the Matrix. The Matrix songs are great, obviously over produced, and very Avril sounding, but they're not embarrasing. I can't take Avril's music seriously--and I'm probably not meant to--but it makes me feel... childish, for lack of a better word. I don't get that feeling with these songs. They have the "hit equation" feel to them, but they're still excellent songs. I'd love to hear Liz on the radio, and honestly, I think these will do it. Liz's voice. Holy crap. She has admitted to receiving voice lessons, and no longer being afraid of performing, and it shows. Some of the older "demo" songs still contain that slightly off-key, on-key, wavering voice that I love, but the newer ones contain vocals that are solid. Clean. Strong. Self-confident. There's no need to worry about the lyrics. We still get a snapshot of Liz's life. "My Mother Is Mine" deals with her son dealing with guys other than Dad. "Friend of Mine", and "Let The Night Come" deal with past and present relationships. "Hot White Cum" is probably the most interesting song on the album. I would go so far as to say the song is not about sex. Let me repeat that. NOT about sex. I'll put lyrics and my thoughts about that in a separate post. "It's A War" is about how one views the world, and how that changes as you get older. "Take A Look" has already been discussed on this list, but I think she takes another shot at her fans (critics) with "Extraordinary." See me jump through hoops for you You stand there watching me performing What exactly do you do? Have you ever thought it's you that's boring? Who the hell are you? Producers. Although I don't have a list of who produced each song, I'm confident I could provide an accurate list based on the sound of each. Should I list my guesses? Lastly, someone mentioned that "Extraordinary" would have made a better first single than "Why Can't I?". Sorry, I don't remember who said it, but I agree. I just think it has this feeling in the music for the radio/pop world: "Hello. I'm Liz Phair. I'm here to show you what good music is. Fuck you." At any rate, the album is fantastic. It's the next "logical" step in a series of albums that relate to how Liz has changed and matured since EIG. This is the kind of record you can sit back with the headphones on and crank--which is what I did Friday night. :-) I can't say enough positive things about it. j. ===== This "Ad" belongs to me - J. I was beaming when they gave it to me and I know I overheard another friend say "wow, I've never seen John-Paul so happy." Anyway, what this means to you is that we have some pictures from the show and I've put them up on my website here: http://www.jpmoney.org/lizsxsw.html Please be patient with it as my DSL connection has some pretty slow upstream. I've already reduced the size of them, so if anyone wants the hi-res originals (Ken perhaps?) let me know and I'll get them to you for better distribution (via Mesmerizing?). They even took a short video. >>Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 21:26:15 -0800 >>From: Kenneth Lee >>Subject: MTV2 assistance >>Hi all, >>Could some kind person tape the MTV2 segment >>for me on Friday? It'll just take time as things are pretty busy around here. Liz is on the last few minutes and they show the Polyester Bride video. If I have time tomorrow I'll transcribe it for everyone as well. From the March 14 interview by Melanie Haupt: Liz: "It's about the joyful love of [hot white cum]. Women artists need to break barriers in order for women's experience to be valuable." And with that, the audience heard Phair sing about her lover's jizz as "the fountain of youth, the meaning of life." I would have thought it that simple except for the line about Dorian Gray. For those of you don't know, Dorian Gray (from "A Picture of Dorian Gray") sold his soul to have his portrait age instead of him, leaving him young and attractive throughout his life. This, of course, leads to a tragic life and tragic ending as his conscience starts to eat away at him. With that in mind, I think the song is about doing what makes you happy, and being happy doing it. Don't feel bad about it. Guilt is the enemy. There is no greater way to fight age, and feel alive, than happiness. So in the case of this song, the fountain of youth--the meaning of life--is sex, but it could be anything. Of course, I don't think there's much out there that makes a person feel younger, better, more joyful than a hot dose of sex. :-P Did that make sense??? j. ===== This "Ad" belongs to me - J. For those that haven't heard "Liz Phair" yet, you're in for a huge surprise. This album is going to kick your ass and make you remember why you fell in love with Liz in the first place. It is amazing. Every song is amazing. The Matrix songs are amazing. This album has affected me more in just two days than any Liz album ever (more than ANY album ever). Yes, even Exile in Guyville. This is the album that we've been waiting for these past ten years (though I love all her albums). Think outside the box, see past all those layers of sound, this album will break your heart. She is not trying to be Avril Lavigne, or Michelle Branch, or Sheryl Crow. She is showing those industry whores how it's done... how to write motherfucking great songs! This is one of the greatest albums of all time. "It's a War" is the best pop anthem ever written since "Teenage Wasteland" by The Who. It is Liz's best song. For those who are interested, I'm working on a detailed review that should be up in a few days on the excellent Supernova website. P.S: The "Liz Phair" version of "Take a Look" is a different mix with louder drums. This album is worth the wait. -Dan - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 17:02:44 -0600 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: some more thoughts... Foxx" Subject: daed ton si ziL (gist - the lyrics suck; "hot white cum" is brilliant) I got my copy of Liz's new CD, and so...I'll give a review. The album is...good. It's really catchy and fun for the most part. It's, at the very least, the best possible album to come out of the whole Avril / Michelle Branch radio phenomenon. Nothing on here sinks to the level of "Sk8er Boi", though...thank God...save "Take a Look". The music's...good. It's fun. It's summer. I really only have one major problem with the album and it's this: lyrics. The lyrics are just... not good. Way too often she seems on autopilot...just filling in whatever cliche rhymes. "Scared" is probably the worst offender here. "Always going nowhere / 'fraid of going somewhere / somewhere's a place in your heart" and "Sitting in your car / changing who you are / drowning the thoughts of your life in the music" are random lyrics from the first verse. Most of the album isn't really...that bad. It's really just that there are...very few memorable lines throughout the album...whereas pretty much every single song on her other three albums seem to have had at least one good line here or there. The lyrics were really disappointing. VERY little personality anywhere. Most of them could've come out of any female singer / songwriter that emerged post-Alanis. This is, for me, by far the most disappointing thing about the new album. A few more minor issues with the album: I wish I could've heard Liz's voice a little more through the production. I love the sound of Liz's voice so much it was sad that, for the most part, it's drowned out by the production. The album version of "Firewalker" is pretty terrible. This goes alone with the voice thing. This song does not work if you cannot hear her singing the chorus with all her might. It's...again...drowned out, and I feel it ruins the song. "My Mother Is Mine" does not fit at all. It's seems...horribly wrong in the context of the album. Like...horribly, terribly wrong. In my personal opinion (especially since everything that gets cut from the album is going to end up on the internet sooner or later), I think the album would be a lot stronger if she cut it down to 10. I would definitely take out "Take a Look", "The Mother Is Mine", and "Firewalker". Maybe "Scared", too. Maybe I should just burn my own version. Whatever. There will inevitably be some changes made from this version by June anyway. We'll see how...those go. (END OF BASHING) THINGS I LOVED ABOUT THIS ALBUM: "Extraordinary" - It's just...catchy. Like...catchy. Like...damn that's catchy. "Rock Me" - The second verse is a total exception to the lame lyric thing above. It just made me smile. It brought me joy. It was glorious. AND MOST OF ALL: "Hot White Cum" I wasn't really sure if I was going to like this or not. But it's just...perfect. It's brilliant. It's brilliant alone, and it's a thousand times better in context. The entire album could've been "Take a Look" and it would've been worth it for this one track. It's just fun. It's summer. I love it. ADDED BONUS: You can hear her voice. It's lovely.
