It sounded like they really wanted to like Liz, and that they were really excited about her, but that she was just being awful. And the clip they played of "Extraordinary" really...confirmed my worst suspicions...because even the lyrics were rediculously awful. It reallly is just sad what's happened to Liz in the past two or so years. It throws me off because I know she's a fairly smart girl. Like...I can dismiss stuff like this with Courtney Love because I mean...I don't think she's all that bright...which usually doesn't matter because of her determination to ROCK. But with Liz it's like...she graduated from Oberlin...which is a fairly selective college (35% acceptance rate), and...I can't see how she can buy into all of this. In Ken's interviews with her she seems just as cool and fun as ever; however, when she goes into her actual music she just seems...awful. She seriously seems brainwashed...like she moved out of Chicago and got "the L.A. lube job" or whatever. I just...don't get how she can do this. I do not see the MTV audience accepting a 35-year-old mother Avril Lavigne, and I don't see how she can either. I really think, at this point, if she would just release like...another whitechocolatespaceegg, it would be significantly more popular this time. I think very recently people have gotten much more receptive to critics. Like...remember 2001?...when the Strokes frickin' took over the world? And then there was the whole MTV2 thing...which freaked music fans around the world out because it was MTV and they were actually playing cool music and they couldn't tell if the White Stripes were cool or not anymore because now everyone knew who they were. I don't think there was a single major magazine that didn't do an article on Cat Power's new CD. And EVERYONE goes to independent films now. Anyway, I think...if she would just release a real album this time, she would get the attention she wants. It's really just...yeah...sad that she's doing it this way. It's a total waste, and I almost feel embarassed for her already. I just...hate this so much. I have no point. I live in Austin and have finally gotten to where I know people working on the festival itself... so what do I do when all of that comes together and Liz is actually there? I fly to Europe for two months. Sure I wouldn't trade this trip for anything, but I can't help but not be happy about missing Liz. Enough complaining out of me - its British Museum time. But if no one's posted the text let me know and I'll type it up to post for ya'll. Let me know... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 22:49:09 -0800 From: "Velocityboy3" Subject: Same Old Liz While I would agree Liz doesn't mix it up too much she doesn't play the same songs every night. I know we shamed her into playing Jealousy. Thrown a few different covers out there such as I'm a Believer. And what is the staged stuff to which you refer? Most artists don't mix it up too much and are heavy on their new releases. I could see her a 100 times. Every concert is always different as far as I'm concerned. Some nights they are not as good as others. They're not machines. I saw a Geraldine Fibbers show once in Hartford of all places at a nice little Jazz and Blues club.(Along w/Quintron and Miss Pussycat, went under about a month later) Carla was all dressed up(w/a T shirt which read I HATE Fucking Homework. There were 100 people if they were lucky. They were good but the place was lifeless. 2 months later I saw them at the Middle East. Place was packed, couldn't fit 1 more person w/a shoehorn. Didn't start until midnight. They were dressed down looking much grungier. Concert was kick ass as everyone was into it. Like night and day. I've seen it repeated plenty of times depending on the venue. It makes a big difference w/a sit down venue vs. standing. Size of club/arena affects it alot. Smaller is almost always better IMO. Also acoustics of the place. For instance sound is dynamite at the Oakdale, the Orpheum. It stinks at the Calvin in Northampton. Makes a big difference. Boy I'm really rambling lately. Sorry.
