ROTFLMHO!!! sms Yahoo! Shopping - Send Flowers for Valentine's Day http://shopping.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 22:14:12 -0500 From: Jase Subject: Upcoming Liz performance Hey everyone, There's an auction on eBay right now for tickets to a Rock the Vote benefit on February 22 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. One of the special guest performers listed is Liz; some of the others include Ben Lee and Moby. Unfortunately, it's a VIP only event and no tickets are being sold to the general public. I thought I'd pass along the news in case someone here wants to bid on the auction and have a chance to attend -- reporting full details back to the list, of course. ;) Here's a link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2507706557&category=210 Cheers, Jase (in no way affiliated with the auction or eBay, just passing along the news) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 20:26:37 -0800 From: "dana p." Subject: dead horse? i hope i'm not belaboring the point, but i think the sexual references just serve to underscore her profound bitterness. i don't think there's any "come on" or double entendre in there at all. she's just being supremely sarcastic, albeit in a defeated way, in her use of those references. she's saying there was a shift: the reason for getting into this mess (we're assuming she's followed the socially instituted game plan)--the white-hot beginnings of a relationship, the sexiness, and then all the glamour of the new marriage, blah, blah, blah--has by this time become dutiful and mind-numbingly boring... most certainly *not* life-affirming. in fact, it's now the complete opposite of what it's "supposed" to be, which is her point all along: what's it's all "supposed to be." she's saying: "look at what a piece of shit my life has become. i don't exist anymore." only she's *not* doing it with alanis- or courtney love-style screaming (and i do wish courtney would get a fucking clue as far as interpreting liz's "potato-like" delivery, but that's another post); she's so blunt, banal, and matter-of-fact that it's almost unbelievable. it's a very "alone with yourself in your own mind" moment. the starkness is utterly superb. and the line that says it all: "i come, that's all." that line just blows me away; always has. it's so perfect--it's kinda Wilde, even, but obviously much, much sadder. anyway, that's the shift, with all the meanings of the word "come" and how it's just a matter of time that provides which particular one she's talking about.... and, again, using words like "cherry" and "come": those are words used by young, hot-shit types and she's completely gutting the slang by explaining how it all cracks, curdles, and molds over in time. she's talking about how it all becomes not only utterly unsexy but rather a soul-shattering matter of life or death. i try not to let my knowledge of the artist's personal life color my interp of their work, but sometimes it bleeds over; you can't help it.... so, knowing she wrote both this and "gunshy" as a young single woman, to me, makes it all the more resonant and haunting.... and so relatable, really. 'cause who didn't do that when they were "coming of age"? you assess and it's sorta like, "oh my god, these are my choices?! this is what i'm in for??!!" or just by dealing with your first "serious" relationship: "...i know all i need to know..." indeed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 22:06:46 -0800 From: Kenneth Lee Subject: the Liz interview part 1 Here's a sampling for your enjoyment: Ken: Here are a few sample questions to get things started. Liz: Ken, here are my thought on your questions. Sorry it's late. Ken: No problem. I figured you would be busy with that hectic schedule. With the release of the film "Julie Johnson" in the near future, will your contributions to that soundtrack finally see public release on CD? Liz: No clue about Julie Johnson. There are a couple of good songs on there that I would be happy to have see the light of day, especially this one called 'She's gone Crazy' that angelo badelimente (sp?!) produced that was haunting and I'd like to hear again. Can you believe I write and record these songs and then lose track of them and keep no copies? What kind of a loser am I?
