That's fucking awesome. I'm so jealous. Maybe if I wasn't so ridiculously lazy, I'd get fabulous e-mails, too. I'm really ashamed that exileinnetville.com is even still extant, drifting changelessly in the ether as a mothballed monument to my 14-year-old self. I can't even bear to read the list most days, since it just reminds me how terrible my website is and what a total washout I've turned out to be. Oh, well. You rock! Oh, and for anyone here who has any idea who I am: When I started reading the Guyville list, I was a 13-year-old high school freshman. I'm now 20 (and a half!) and reluctantly accepting that I'm going to have to allow the university to graduate me in May. And, thanks to the NYC Teaching Fellows program, I'm hoping to be *teaching* 13-year-olds in September. What the fuck is the deal with *that*? I miss being an infant prodigy. Now - (disclaimer) i am not comparing the two for even a MINUTE - but let's take a look at Colleen Fitzpatrick for a second. she pretty much said the same thing - she had two critically acclaimed alternative-rock albums and did nitty gritty dirty gigs in dark bars to a small but loyal following of fans (including me!) for several years. she was a college radio favorite (sound familiar?) then she decided she wanted to conquer mainstream and get on the radio, so dropped her band and became Vitamin C. yep..she got on the radio alright - but she also transformed herself into an older incarnation of Ms.Spears. now i know this is not going to be the case w/ liz phair at all - i'm just using the worst-case scenario to make a point. what sort-of scared me was how she referred to the album as "the professional" album - and she referred to her "own art" as something different. it's cool that we might see liz on the radio (and i think we really are going to this time) i'm just worried about *which* liz we will be seeing...you know? she herself made a mention of "pre-digested" product. of course - there is hope - the fact that she wants to make accessible sounding music with "shocking" lyrics is really intriguing - and it is what is giving me hope. perhaps she'll end up being the artist who saves rock and roll, which would be fantastic. at the same time this could be her way of saying "Yeah... i made an album that the men in suits are happy with and the masses are going to like - but just know - i still do my own thing too - although it might not get much air play and it will not be on the album..." of course i'm merely speculating, reading between the lines and putting words in liz's mouth, but it's just a thought i had. i hope that isn't what she is really saying and i don't think it is..but there's the chance. i'm ULTRA excited for it - and the email was terrific - congrats ken - yer site really does rock. keep us updated on the status of the interview. i'm trusting i'm gonna love the new liz album...i absolutely adore WCSE and i can't see her making a shitty album. the email sounds like the old liz is still there - which is a good thing. i think the whole song-a-month subscription thing is an INCREDIBLE idea. i would subscribe in a heartbeat. at any rate - i'm out. dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 21:03:40 -0800 From: "Jeff Gibson" Subject: Cherish Now, I pretty much ignored most of the letters after the first couple regarding the movie Cherish simply b/c they were overwhelming. But I was at the video store looking for movies to rent other than Minority Report. Then I came across this movie. It had Liz and Robin Tunney in it and it sounded interesting, so I thought I'd check it out. It was pretty cute. A little contrived (they kind of glossed over important details during the last 20 minutes), but cute. I was disappointed to see Liz play a bitch. She was all right, but it was just disappointing seeing her play someone you're not supposed to like much. I do wonder if anybody knows of any comments Liz made about this movie and her involvement in it. -- Jeff ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #6 **********************************
