What does everyone think about her? She's such a bizarre artist to me . . . her music is repetitive to the point of insanity and she's certainly the most mellow music I have in my collection. And yet she has this distinctive sound that is so clearly her own and has fought extremely hard to maintain her integrity as an artist, I can't help but find her music moving in some way. Which makes me think. What if WCSE never happened? What if Liz continued to release albums in the WS . . . EIG vein? Would we accuse her of repetitiveness? Lost in Space is really just a continuation of Bachelor No. 2, the sound is exactly the same. Is it a worse crime as a musical artist to never change your style, or to digress into a more mainstream one? I was really angry and bitter at Liz for a while, but after listening to EIG multiple times over the past few weeks, I've realized she's probably a lot smarter than even I have giver her credit for . . . "I'll turn my disgust into fame, and watch how fast they run to the flame." If this lyric means what I think it does, she had her whole career mapped out from the beginning and is enjoying the controversy immensely. james ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 06:33:04 -0800 (PST) From: ---becky--- Subject: Re: support-system-digest V5 #260 << somwone on this list was once dubbing pj harvey > rare material cd's. > > i had a copy but it disappeared in a house fire > i had this fall. ppof. becky's reading my mind. the nice person (jen?) offered to burn the CD for me some time ago, and i slacked and didn't send my blank CD, but wanted to see if i could still get a copy. becky, of course, deserves hers first (a fire? how very awful. you weren't hurt, were you?) :) email me privately if the offer still stands!>>> i think it mostly affected my ability to type. - -becky. With the intermittent dribble of songs lately each one gets more scrutiny than a cd of material would, at least in the case of weaker entries. As I've said before, it's not as encouraging as Down but it's not awful. And I'd say as far as voice goes, Liz's more focused vocal training seems to be paying off. It's probably true that those cracking croaks that crop up in the tapes are part of her earlier lo-fi charm, but some attention to her instruments could also good surprises as well.
