Everyone is jumping on the tail end of this "it sounds like The Matrix produced it", but... It wasn't those idiot Matrix people... I agree that the pairing of Liz and them is absolutely horrible, but - I've never given up hope that this will still be a Liz Phair album. I was a bit shocked when the egg came out, only because it didn't feature interesting polaroids and I really wanted the LP to have a gatefold cover, and of course, it didn't. But it made up for that when I found it on audiophile vinyl. For now - I like the song. Those that can't hear Liz plainly enough to realize that she's still Liz, well... you aren't listening hard enough, or you've made too big of a deal about this Matrix-Avril-Liz shit from the beginning. And besides that, they're only working on three songs as far as we know. And if they do - so be it. If you can't be open to it and think that it proves that Capitol is pushing her to be "pop", then that's your thing and you're entitled to it. But, Capitol has always billed her as "modern rock"... what "modern rock" means anymore, I'm not quite sure... I mean, they classify OTEP as modern rock. What's that shit all about? Anyone that knows OTEP knows they're not "modern rock". They even classify Radiohead as "modern rock". If they can lump Radiohead with Liz in the same catagory, it can't be all that bad really. Maybe Capitol isn't so bad after all.... wait, just checked... yeah, they still suck. What label is that Avril brat on? I personally don't care enough about her to even look it up. Is it Capitol? Oh well. She just looks like she smells anyway. When I upload the new version of the site I'll address things further if I feel like it. That's my opinion. Feel free to bash me for speaking it. The real news is: "Take A Look" was produced by MICHAEL PENN and is billed on the capitol promo as from "the highly anticipated new LP in stores early 2003 on Capitol Records". The promo disc was apparently given out to new broadband internet subscribers (actual company unknown at this point - maybe everyone could check their local broadband isp's and try and beg for a disc if they have one?) around this past September or October, and says this about Liz and the album.... "One of modern rock's most cherished artists, credited as the inspiration behind Alanis Morissette, Liz Phair returns triumphantly to the world of music with her first new music since 1998. She brings along at once her most interesting and assured record, full of the candor, insight and chunky riffage you've come to expect, along with some surprises. Listen to 'Take a Look' from the highly anticipated new LP in stores early 2003." - -m http://suprnova.lunamorena.net =========================== "Because I *SAID* So!" -Charles Manson "Your holy book of revelation, your holy cock is masturbating it doesn't take a prophet baby, to tell me that your damned" -lizband, "motherfucker" =========================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Dec 2002 03:50:30 -0500 From: Jase Subject: Top 10 of 2002 This was pretty tough, but I was finally able to narrow it down to this: 01. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat 02. The Distillers - Sing Sing Death House 03. Mary Timony - The Golden Dove 04. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 05. The Breeders - Title TK 06. Sonic Youth - Murray Street 07. Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes 08. Aimee Mann - Lost in Space 09. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Yeah Yeah Yeahs (EP) 10. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots I think I might have ranked the Distillers slightly higher than I should, but I've listened to _Sing Sing Death House_ more than any other album during the last several months. There are a couple of lesser tracks during the second half of the record, which is the only thing that's holding me back from naming it my favorite record of the year. As it is, though, "I am a Revenant," "The Young Crazed Peeling," "City of Angels," and "Seneca Falls" are among my favorite songs of the year. I feel almost as passionate about this record as I did about Hole's _Live Through This_ in 1994. Overall, it's been a phenomenal year for music, but I have to feel a little disappointed that I didn't discover many new artists or bands this year that were all that inspiring. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP is the only debut release in my top ten; all of the others are bands or artists who have at least one previous record to their name. Still, I shouldn't complain. Sleater-Kinney continue to amaze me, Sonic Youth made their best album in years, and Mary Timony has given me yet another reason to think she's a genius. As for the Breeders, it's been a more than welcome return. _Title TK_ is pretty damn great and the Imperial Teen/Breeders show I saw in July was the best I attended all year. I've heard a few people (not on this list, mind you) complain that the new record is such a departure from _Last Splash_ and how it's not as accessible, but I'm glad they didn't just repeat themselves. I think I'd be more disappointed to see them, after almost a decade, return with an album that sounds like a rehash of their last one. I also really liked Spoon's _Kill the Moonlight_, Wire's _Read and Burn 01_, Elvis Costello's _When I Was Cruel_, and Guided By Voices' _Universal Truths and Cycles_. I think Beck's _Sea Change_ and Rhett Miller's _The Instigator_ both suffered from being released after I bought the Distillers album. I've played them both a few times and liked what I heard, but I haven't listened to them enough to know where they rank among all the other music I enjoyed this year. My Top 10 list may need to be revised a few months from now. I also enjoyed the Loud Family's _From Ritual to Romance_ a lot, but I've never been able to justify including live albums among my year-end picks. I'm not quite sure why, but it seems like cheating to me, the same way including a greatest hits or compilation album would. In terms of reissues, the one I've enjoyed the most is Pavement's _Slanted and Enchanted: Luxe and Reduxe_. The album itself has always been one of my favorites, but the wealth of bonus material and the improved quality of the remastered tracks has made this one of my best musical purchases this year. There are a lot of releases that I'm looking forward to next year, including new albums by The Distillers, Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh, Cat Power, Stephen Malkmus, PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Yo La Tengo, Blur, and Fountains of Wayne, as well as full-lengths by both Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Loveless. Then, of course, there's Liz. I'm trying to be optimistic and hope my suspicions will be proven wrong. The fact that "Take a Look" was produced by Michael Penn has thrown me for a bit of a loop, though. I'm a fan of his and have liked pretty much everything he's worked on, with the exception of the Wallflowers record that he co-produced. But his work on things like Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" and his own _MP4: Days Since a Lost Time Accident_ is incredible. I guess we'll have to wait and see... I'm also looking forward to the album that Scott Miller (The Loud Family, Game Theory) is making with Aimee Mann, but I don't know if it'll be out next year or not. I'm on the Michael Penn list and I'm sure they would find this of great interest. Now that I've heard it a few more times, yes it's very Produced, but it's not annoying. I still like it. That bridge with the bongos, great stuff. Andrea ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #256 ************************************
