Reading this digest, I have realized a LOT of things. Sheeeeesh! To wit: 1. I COMPLETELY forgot that NIN's live album and _Still_ were released this year. So now _Still_ comes in at #3 on my list, and everything else shifts down accordingly. What an idiot I am!!!!! 2. How incredible that Bowie's _Heathen_ is so appreciated with my fellow supportsystemers. Yes, I know I'm totally prejudiced, but I've still listened to it more than anything else this year. DARVEED BOHO ROOLZ!!!!! 3. The Paybacks should get into a bar fight with those pussy Strokes. I know where my money would be. 4. ReallyHip@aol.com, I am in love with you. 5. Yeah, I got all the X and Blondie remasters this year, and ALL were worth the dosh. Of course, the X ones were free, so that doesn't really count, does it? BTW, a friend of mine worked for Exene for a while and said she was the most incredibly evil bitch ever, for what it's worth. 6. Jase, you said, "I'm sort of dreading the new record because I'm scared that I won't like it." Well, I couldn't have said that better in a million years. I'm there, dude. 7. For anyone who cares, my remix of Tweaker's "Take Me Alive," with vox by Craig Wedren of Shudder To Think is available as a free stream to BowieNet members right now. I can't give you an MP3, but it'll be on the Tweaker DVD this winter. derek ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Dec 2002 02:30:38 -0500 From: KPowers443@aol.com Subject: 2002 top four I haven't found 10 albums worth mentioning this year. The most I could come up with is four. In no particular order: 1. Breeders - Title TK 2. Abandoned Pools - Humanistic 3. Kay Hanley - Cherry Marmalade 4. Norah Jones - Come Away With Me In 2003 I'm waiting for new music from Liz (though I'm prepared for disappointment) and the Guano Apes. I see there's a number of people that mentioned the Breeders on their lists. Just today, the new Breeders video for 'Son Of Three' was put up on http://thebreeders.us/ - make sure y'all check it out. Me, I think it's fab. If you're starved for new 'chick rock', check out www.marinerfour.com. Mayhaps you find a new band to listen to. I hope it comes out ok this time. Ah, yes. The good old year end top ten list. Well, here goes! 1. Ausioslave - Audioslave 2. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Last DJ 3. Dave Pirner - Faces & Names 4. Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal 5. The Donnas - Spend The Night 6. Foo Fighters - One By One 7. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood To The Head 8. 3 Doors Down - Away From The Sun 9. Rush - Vapor Trails 10. Jerry Cantrell - Degredation Trip For next year, I can't wait for new Liz, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Label Society, Anthrax, Iced Earth, Scott Weiland, Robert Deleo, and Some Girls albums. Also, I just wanted to say that after listening to 'Take a Look' about 3 times in a row, it's not as bland as I first thought. Some of the lyrics are actually really good. I'll have to give it a few more listens. Craig Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. First of all, do we even know who produced "Take a Look"? My guess is The Matrix. If this is so, then this is one of the three glossy "singles". Liz's albums are usually quite long. If this is Michael Penns's production, then I'm worried. Anyway, the song itself isn't bad at all. It's so Liz. Down to the repitious chorus that doesn't go anywhere. "Wanna take a look?/Take a look/Wanna take a look?/Take a look/Wanna take a look?/Take a look", etc. How about "I never said nothing/I never said nothing/I never said nothing/I never said nothing"; you get the idea? I don't even think the production is that bad. It just doesn't really match her style. There's a shitload of feedback in the second verse, and in the third verse the guitar part is backwards. The drums are a little much. And I like the lyrics a lot. I definitely feel that the melody for the verse is much better than the chorus (although it is reeeally catchy). I'm not so sure if this is going to be a single though. Her voice is EXTREMELY wobbly. And I don't think they would put the debut single on an advance promo. Also, we're hearing the song out of context. I like WCSE a lot, but what if we only heard a song like "Big Tall Man", or "What Makes You Happy" after waiting for four years after whip-smart? Those songs are very produced, but are really good songs in the context of the album (at least I think so). We'll have to wait and see what happens, but I don't think Liz will let us down. Who's going to buy her record if it sucks? Critics will trash it becuase their expectations are so high of her. Everyone needs to listen to it a few more times. I promise it will grow on you. I think a common misconception here is that those not in tune with the new song have a problem with her lyrical themes. I personally don't care if Liz sings about a blowjob or a moldy burrito, as long as she maintains her musical integrity. Yes, I identified very closely with both EIG and WS, but I don't indentify with a lot of my favorite artists lyrically -- I'm not even sure what the hell Kim Deal is singing about half the time. Ultimately, it's the musical style of "Take a Look" that drives me crazy. As so many others have said, it is so cookie-cutter. I mean, this is the woman who made a career out of dubbing and over-dubbing, and mixing and over-mixing her guitar and voice. Sometimes I listen to "Support System" and am just amazed with how she accomplishes so much with so little. And how about "Nashville", where someone held the mic swinging over her head to get just the right sound? I also ask, what does Liz really think she is going to acheive here? The critics are going to really cut her up, her old fan base is fading, and I don't think this new song is going to make her any new ones. The female thing seems to still be in full effect: Neko Case - Blacklisted (Mint) Dixie Chicks - Home (Epic) Fischerspooner - #1 (Ministry of Sound) Patty Griffin - 1000 Kisses (ATO) Miss Kittin & The Hacker - First Album (Emperor Norton) N*E*R*D - In Search Of (Virgin) Princess Superstar - Is (Rapster) Sahara Hotnights - Jennie Bomb (Jetset) Linda Thompson - Fashionably Late (Rounder) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - EP (Touch & Go) Several of these were originally released in 2001 but they got wide/domestic re-releases (and I first heard them) this year. For Liz fans I'd highly recommend the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; liking any of the others would be strictly coincidental. As for Liz, took a listen to "Take a Look" and found it terrible -- not quite up to the level of the worst songs on WCSE. "Generic" is exactly the right word, and I highly suspect she had some songwriting 'help' from her hit-doctor producers. If this song is not an anomaly and truly represents the sound of her new album, I won't be buying it. End of story. My only post here in 2002? This is my first post, I believe, since I joined. So, hi. I am disappointed to hear all the negative reception to Liz's new song. I haven't heard it, but I'm hoping it (as well as the album) isn't as bad as the plethora of posts make it out to be. Personally, I loved WCSE -- it's one of my fave albums of all time, and I liked "Down". So, if it's on the same level as those two (I hope it is at the very least), then maybe I'll like it. This list topic is the single most interesting topic yet, so I thought I'd put in my two cents. I'd have to say that this year has been an incredible one for album releases overall. So many great established artists released albums, I was totally nutting, even with compilations aside! I haven't heard most of the ones already noted, nor many of the ones I'm interested in (The Donnas, Pearl Jam, etc.), and on top of that, I'm having a hard time remembering what I've bought these past few months (comps. aside). Therefore I'm just shy of 10 in my list, however here's what I enjoyed most out of what I do remember hearing (in order): Sleater-Kinney: One Beat Dixie Chicks: Home John Butler Trio: Three (Australian band that toured w/ DMB) Red Hot Chili Peppers: By The Way Kasey Chambers: Barricades & Brickwalls DMB: Busted Stuff Tori Amos: Scarlet's Walk Toshi Reagon: Toshi Sheryl Crow: C'mon C'mon Worst albums: anything marketed specifically for 10-18 crowd, specifically new albums by Pink, No Doubt, Avril Lavigne (although it does sound like she tries better than others), Christina Aguilera (somebody show this chick how to put her vocal talents to better use!), and Aaron Carter. Also, comps by U2 (for its overabundance of remixes and chronological disorder) and Nirvana (for lack of chronological order and serving as more of a sampler than a decent representation of the band's best work). If I have more, I'll add it later. Take care all! -- Jeff ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #251 ************************************
