Subject: feeding frenzy! i forgot to mention that i think it's got that same "uncle alvarez" wobbly verse melody. i think this may be where she gets the "quirky" label, 'cause i can't really figure out where the hell else she's "quirky." to me that word sounds more like it should be used for some doe-eyed dizzy girl who wears too many barettes and socks with high-heeled sandals--in the winter. not that there's anything wrong with that. and, yeah, the song is very much an outgrowth of WCSE; this one sounds like maybe what she was really going for on that one. just a thought. anyways, jase, i think yer way too optimistic here, tho' i understand the need for hope . i honestly don't think she's industrious enough to want to make the rest "good." at this point it's all about joining the ranks of the ladies who made, for example, the cover of Vanity Fair's so-called music issue (another disgusting travesty, if anyone caught that issue. personally, i think the only one who deserved to be on there was alicia keys. and probably gwen stefani--i really dig gwen. sorry, but i'm just sick and tired of sheryl and don't *even* get me started on j.lo.... gawd.) and, to use her words, "putting on lipstick next to milla jovovich works for me." i'm sure capitol has been telling her that she deserves to be better known, because, hey, *it's true*, but, well, here we are. they prolly said, "we'll take care of it." and, especially, living on the west coast and traveling in those circles, seeing all the stuff you can have, all that's available.... how you could be living. she's made up her mind. matador probably would've wanted her to pair up with someone who'd have a strong idea of how she should sound and maybe she thought, "see ya." i think it's pretty well-documented that, after the release of EiG, she somewhat resented brad wood's involvement, most likely because she knew his input was indeed valuable and didn't want to have to "depend" on anyone. (never tell an aries what to do!! ) i think the only reason she's putting up with the micromanagement now is because it's not really personal anymore; she's as detached as ever, almost weirdly so. which is why i don't foresee any "blood on the tracks" coming out here--at all. she's not at all concerned with letting it bleed; only insofar as she (and capitol's hitmeisters) can make a massive feel-good hit out of one of her stories. which means taking *one part* of a story and then: later, rinse, repeat; lather, rinse, repeat. all together now..... and that crack about how the song's about her dismal string of career moves was funny as hell. toodles for now, dp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Dec 2002 03:07:40 -0500 From: ReallyHip@aol.com Subject: Takin a look thoughts A few things. I hope this is a mere radio edit to a longer song. I had the same reaction to this as I did to Tori Amos' "A Sorta Fairytale": Good; a progression; but why so lyrically blank? Hopefully we'll see an extra verse on the album. Also... do some of the lyrics seem like they could be applied to us? Our thoughts on her radical decisions regarding her producers? Read the lyrics below, but apply the lyrics directly to her fans. It could seem insulting, even. :) I dont know what youre after, you wanna know all the details of my disaster. like an accident on the side of the road and youre driving past slow, but theres nothing to see here. I am some kind of freak now, You'll never see me the same whats all the fuss about? are you sure you wanna find out? cuz once you know the truth (perhaps about her wanting to be a pop star?) you might wish you'd walked away (as far as I can tell, many of us are quite ready to walk away... if the full album keeps this way) Here are the lyrics again. The voice and the songwriting still get me. When she comes to the "What if I'm not able/To put my cards on the table" bridge, I get the old Liz Phair goosebumps. Of course, I'm sure part of that is the fact that this is the first we've heard of her for, what, fuck knows how long. But I'm not completely revolted. Hey, have I shared how much I freaking LOVE LOVE LOVE an album from the Paybacks called _Knock Loud?_ This record is as much a revelation to me as Jen Trynin's _Cockamamie_, and it makes me start to believe rock might still be alive despite those cocksucking Strokes and Hives. I have mine ready to go... Now seems as good a time as any. It's now the first of December and most labels don't put out many new albums this late in the year, so it seems safe to start compiling best of the year lists without fear of leaving off any significant releases. Traditionally, I think this is about the time we've usually started posting our top tens in the past. It's going to take me a while to come up with mine. There were probably a couple of dozen albums this year that I really liked; trying to narrow it down to ten is going to be tough. I grabbed it and put it on hold so that I could see if anyone on the list wanted it. They're selling it for $9.98 + tax (so $10.77). If anyone wants it send me an e-mail and I'll pick it up for you. Robin L. taliak@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Dec 2002 22:28:28 -0600 From: "Mark McFly-er" Subject: Take a Look, etc. Well, it was nice...to hear Liz's voice loud and clear (chorus aside) in a new song. That's...mostly it. I really liked the first verse, especially the tail end...but the rest sorta made me want to cry. I missed "Down" actually. "Down" and "Take a Look" have almost identical structures...but for some reason in "Down" (while by no means a model of perfection) the structure worked, whereas in "Take a Look" it just made everything after the first verse feel extremely unnecessary...like its only purpose was to fill out the remaining three minutes so it would qualify as an actual song or whatever. It got really obnoxious. I'm pretty sure this is the only Liz song that I don't enjoy listening to at all. I've only listened to it a few times, but...yeah. It's just...not even her. So, so bland. First verse aside, this could be Jennifer Love Hewitt. I love Liz, and if her entire album were filled with even lesser songs, I would still probably wear out my copy, but...really. At least we can probably look forward to a studio version of "Firewalker"...? I...liked "Firewalker"...a lot...like...in that "Poleyester Bride", it's-not-why-I-love-Liz-Phair-but-it's-still-a-really-well-written-and-extremely-catchy-pop-song kinda way. Or maybe songs like "Firewalker" are why I love Liz Phair. I don't know. I'm confusing myself. She's not going to make another Whip-Smart, but if she can make a fun, catchy "Soak up the Sun"-ish pop cd (better than C'mon, C'mon), I'd be more than satisfied. At least the slower songs should be ok. I think it'd be hard to overproduce "That's the Way I Like It"...or...weird example, but...yeah. Oh!...but "That's the Way I Like It" is the perfect example of why I love Liz Phair. It's by no means my favorite Liz song, but...yeah...just the feel of it. What's the story behing "That's the Way I Like It" by the way? Because...I just downloaded it off Kazaa or WinMX or whatever I was using at the time (I've only been a Liz fan for about two years, so I didn't get into the unreleased stuff until around this time last year)...and it was labeled as a cover so I had only really listened to it recently...but...yeah...I'm curious to know what it's from...why she was singing it. Like...because...it's not a concert...and it wasn't a WCSE reject and it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a studio. It sounds almost like she just made it up on the spot on some talk show or something. And...I've been rambling for quite some time now...but...yeah...anyway...can someone tell me about this...because I'm curious...and I KNOW YOU KNOW. ...? I'm done. I'll still be more than estatic when Liz sets a date for the new album. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #249 ************************************
