This sounds less like Liz than WCSE did. Way too slick on the production. The song isn't necessarily bad, just not very inspiring. I'm very disappointed. At least Down SOUNDED like Liz. It doesn't even sound like she played any guitar on this new song. If she does, I certainly can't hear her style. I hope she does on the other tracks on the new album. 4 1/2 years for this? :( Maybe it'll grow on me, but I hope better material is on the horizon. Craig Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sadly enough, this story has become all too common, Cake & Pie was basically dumped on the market by A&M, and Lisa, according to what she said on her site, didn't like how the label didn't want to promote it or have her tour behind it as much as she liked. I suspect this was an understement, she apparently bought the album from A&M, and re-released it, with a few songs changed, including sequence of songs, as Hello Lisa on a new label Atremis. I have both as their both good. However, i think the new songs on HL are better then what was on C&P, so I would get Hello Lisa. I haven't heard it yet, but if it's that bad should we hope it's a hoax and
not really her? Are we sure it's really Liz singing?

It's definitely Liz singing. I'd recognize her voice anywhere.

I'm not sure what to make of it myself. I'm hoping she's taking the Aimee
Mann approach here. Back when Aimee was still signed to Geffen/Interscope
and was having serious problems with the label, she had said, "I've had
this revelation about singles. I've suddenly realized that if I have one
song that they think is a single, they really don't care about the rest of
the record. Then I can make the rest of the record good. This is my new
philosophy -- I actually want to be a one-hit wonder. It's only to my benefit."

Now that Liz is signed to a major and is expected to "move units," let's
hope she's taking the above approach and that the whole album isn't going
to sound like this.

Capitol seems to be trying to get her to jump on every hot trend, though --
write with this hit doctor, hire this hot production team... "Take a Look"
sounds so generic, it could have been by just about anyone. I'd rather see
Liz allowed to be herself.

I mean, what's next? Say, for example, if the Distillers become as popular
as I hope they do, is Capitol going to ask Liz to start sporting liberty
spikes and a lip ring?

Say what you will about Matador, but I doubt Liz would have ever worked
with the Matrix if she was still signed with them.

i disagree with those aren't impressed with the song. now, perhaps it's
because i'm on such a Liz-jones that any crumb will do, but i think it's an
interesting extension from "Down." i think, like with every Liz song, there
is some hook or phrase or musical aspect that's highly enjoyable. it's not
"Shatter" or "Divorce Song," but then again, what else is?

with the themes from the two songs so tightly similar, it makes me wonder if
this new album will be Liz's "Blood On The Tracks." before anyone begins to
argue, i don't mean to expect it to be one of the most essential albums ever
created (like Dylan's "Blood" or Liz's "EIG"), but rather "the breakup album"
where she opens up her veins (and anyone else's who are around) and lets it
bleed for a while.

Dylan couldn't understand at the time how so many people could take such joy
from such a painful album. that sounds exactly like the message from this
song. not that we're taking joy from it, per se, but that we can't help but
watch someone go down and be interested in it.

A while ago someone posted a link for the singing dictionary version of fuck
and run. It was great, but it seems to have been deleted from my computer
somehow (you know *I* did not do this!) Can anyone give me that link again
or email me the mp3? It would be most appreciated! =) Thank you, thank you,
thank you!

Also - I kind of like the new song. I have accepted that we'll never have
another Exile, or even another Whip Smart. It's not too bad, but I would
have liked more lyrics other than the "Take a Look" over and over and over
and over again.

Please don't hold this against me if you disagree and can point me to the
singing dictionary song. (Just kidding!) Thanks!

i don't mind the new song. a little repetitive but i don't mind it. it
reminds me a bit of Polyester Bride...i especially like the "what if i'm
not able to put my cards on the table..and would it liberate you if you
knew what i knew....it's been over a year now and i never saw him again..etc.."
i think that's almost classic liz in a way...i don't know..it's just new
and different than some of her stuff we're used to...my interest was
peaked...i thought it was gonna be a lot worse...it's no worse than "love
is nothing" or "greased lightening" or "headache", in my opinion.
it's cute...and it's true..we were all wondering "ohmygod did she get a
divorce? what happened? did he cheat? did she cheat? she's not married?
they broke up?"
we all wanted to 'take a look'....
hahahha wooo she's "SOOOOOOOOOO deep"...
hahahahaha
cute song though,

well, thanks for posting this. the song is not very good, and --
surprisingly -- very generically and poorly produced with a *very* lame
guitar break. i don't want to engage in piling on here, but i think we've
all been uneasy and skeptical about what liz (or, more to the point,
capitol) would release, and this confirms many of the worst suspicions.
hoping the rest of the record is better, but there's no indication that it
will be. i will say, i sort of like the bridge in this song, but in a very
uninvolved sort of way. like if i think a chord change is handled well in
an otherwise dismal faith hill song. i mean, there's almost always
*something* to like in almost every song. so i'll give it that. but
there's no point wasting anymore typing on it.

Neither do I. In fact I like Take A Look very much. It sounds like a natural
progression from anything on WCSE, and frankly, this probably is going to be
Liz as we'll have to hear her. I don't think this song is her selling out at
all. It's a good pop song, and really I want her to have a hit. Why, because
she's too good to ignore, and i want everyone to know about her. And I'd
rather have her have a hit and show, Branch, Carilton, Levine how it's really
done, writing a good song. And she may really need the money form this album.
She's got a child to raise, maybe has alimony payments, and all kinds of
other expenses. And everyone has got to make a living someway, and what's
wrong from making money your art if your talented enough to be able to do
that. I know that's the way I want it to be with my book. I'm not trying to
flame anyone, or make anyone angry at me, but I really don't know why
everyone is so upset.
