That's what I'd assume, but you never know. The wording of it is a bit tricky -- "has begun sessions in Encino, California, for her first album since 1998's _whitechocolatespaceegg_. She's working with the Matrix..." It would have made more sense if it said something like "has begun sessions with the Matrix to complete work on her first album since..." That's a little closer to what was written in the blurb in Entertainment Weekly a few weeks back. And it wouldn't be the first time Liz has scrapped entire sessions' worth of material. Maybe she likes how things are turning out with the Matrix better than the stuff she did with the previous producers. Or maybe the label smells hits and wants her to do more stuff with them. I guess we'll see what happens. If it really is just those few songs she was supposed to be doing with the Matrix, it is possible that they're done already. Production teams like that usually work quickly. If that's the case, the album could be out as soon as three or four months from now (which is usually about the approximate time from when a record's completed to when it hits stores). Liz's "Exile In Guyville" was ranked #24 as far as "essential listening" was concerned. (#24 my ass...) Sleater-Kinney ~ who i thought disdained any mention of "women in rock" ~ were one of the featured artists, although the only album of theirs in the Top 50 of essential listening was "The Hot Rock." i don't agree with the placement (early 40's) or the album ("Dig Me Out" anyone?). might be worth a perusal out there. chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2002 19:36:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Griffes Subject: maxim/matrix. I wouldn't take anything seriously that you read in a magazine that refers to liz as "Indie rock's 'blow job queen'". maxim is the kinda of mag that's for the creepy guys at liz shows that scream lewd things during "flower". >>NP: The Distillers, _Sing Sing Death House_<< i haven't heard them, but i was reading that a band called Sing Sing was playing a show here...and evidently Emma from Lush is in the band? anyone know if they're any good? thanks steve. np - virgina dare, baby got away :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2002 20:00:53 -0400 From: Jase Subject: Re: "Women In Rock" issue Chris wrote: >yesterday, had a chance to peruse Rolling Stone's "Women In Rock" issue. >Liz's "Exile In Guyville" was ranked #24 as far as "essential listening" was >concerned. (#24 my ass...) _Exile in Guyville_ ranked only #24? You've got to be kidding me. I'm almost afraid to ask what albums scored higher. The only really justifiable one I can think of would be Joni Mitchell's _Blue_, or possibly Patti Smith's _Horses_ (and even that one's questionable). I haven't even seen the issue yet, although I thought about buying it the other night when I picked up the new issues of Spin and Blender. I think I'm going to have to go grab a copy of it tonight. I'm going to take a few guesses here, just to see how right or wrong I might be. I'm going to guess that Tori Amos, Bikini Kill, Blondie, The Breeders, Sheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco, The Go-Go's, PJ Harvey, Hole, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, The Pretenders, Patti Smith, Lucinda Williams, and X were all included. I'm also going to assume that Babes in Toyland, the Bangles, Belly, Cat Power, Elastica, Garbage, Juliana Hatfield, Helium (or Mary Timony), Kristin Hersh (or Throwing Muses), L7, and Aimee Mann weren't. I'm not sure about Veruca Salt and X-Ray Spex. I'm probably pretty far off on my guesses, but it'll be interesting to see by how much. >Sleater-Kinney ~ who i thought disdained any mention of "women in rock" ~ were >one of the featured artists, although the only album of theirs in the Top 50 >of essential listening was "The Hot Rock." i don't agree with the placement >(early 40's) or the album ("Dig Me Out" anyone?). I wonder if they were featured by choice or not. They may not even be aware that they were picked. Rolling Stone could have easily used quotes of theirs from earlier interviews. It wouldn't surprise me... I don't agree with the choice of album either. It's not that I don't like _The Hot Rock_; I just don't find it as essential as _Dig Me Out_ or _Call the Doctor_. And their placement does seem far too low. I'd have had them somewhere in the Top 10. I shouldn't complain too much, though. I'm just glad they were included. If the feature inspires a few more people to pick up one of their albums, that's even better. They put in Jagged Little Pill and a k.d. lang album over all of Ani's stuff? And, I'm sorry, but Dionne Warwick and Salt-n-Pepa are not rock. Stories From the City is not PJ's best, yet they picked that one for her, at number 8 no less. I also don't think Sheryl Crow's self-titled is her best. The Globe Sessions is so much better. Melissa Etheridge isn't in there, and should be over some of these people. At least they got Bjork, although Post is only at 43. Meanwhile, Mary J. Blige is 17. This list sucks. Top five were: 1 - Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You 2 - Joni Mitchell - Blue 3 - Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis 4 - Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 5 - Patti Smith - Horses 6 - Blondie - Parallel Lines 7 - Janis Joplin - Pearl 15 - Sleater-Kinney - The Hot Rock 16 - Madonna - Like a Prayer 22 - Sinead 26 - Breeders 27 - Janet Jackson 33 - X 34 - Dolly Parton 41 - Cyndi Lauper 45 - Bonnie Raitt 47 - Joan Jett 48 - Yoko Ono 50 - Aimee Mann (Magnolia sndtrk) scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . The URL is [http://www.coloransas.com/lizmp3s.html]. A big thanks should go to Sandra, who has offered up the space to host these files. So far there are six songs up ("In Love With Yourself," "Money," "Six Dick Pimp," "Stratford-on-Guy," "If I Ever Pay You Back" and "Shane"). There will be more eventually; I haven't had a chance to encode any of the other files yet. Hopefully at some point, I will be able to organize a proper distribution of the cleaned-up discs, but right now I'm too swamped to take it on. As I said a couple of weeks ago, I'm not going to make any more promises, so that no one ends up being let down. Also, I'd be curious to get some feedback on how these sound compared to any other copies of _Girly Sound_ that are currently in circulation. I tried my best to clean these up without introducing the metallic hiss that plagued some of the tracks on the Bliss & Fetish discs. There's only so much you can do, though, with material like this. I do think these may sound a little too treble-y, so I might work on tweaking them further. If it turns out that the general consensus is that these don't sound substantially better than what's already out there, I may not bother to circulate them later on after all. There wouldn't be much point of wasting everyone's effort on something that's not a vast improvement on the copies people already have. But let me know what you think. I'd appreciate the feedback.
