I've kept quite for a long time, but here are my two cents. LIZ NEVER WANTED TO BE FAMOUS. I doubt that this would drastically change over an approximate three year period. Also, given the amount of time she spent on perfecting wcse, I also doubt that she would completely go against everything she stands for and release a really bad pop album. If this were the case she would not have been working on it for so long. And also, who is to say that those "Matrix" songs will even make it onto the album? And didn't Pete Yorn (hate him if you will) say that her new songs were a return to Exile? What about the new songs we've already heard? "Down" is so fucking far from a commercial sell out. It only has like 6 or 7 tracks in it. And finally, Capitol would be making a HUGE mistake if they put out a bad Liz Phair album. It would totally alienate her fan base, and even if she gets a new mainstream teenage audience, they are only going to be disgusted by her earlier work. Plus, Liz is a critics favorite. She will get slammed so hard if her album is a sell out, I'm sure she knows this. A huge selling, but mainstream album from Liz would probably fuck her career so hard. And has she ever let us down before? I know some people don't like wcse, but I think it's brilliant. It's a little bit more polished, but the songs are just as beautifully written. I know it's hard, I have my doubts too, especially over the whole thing with having people come in and write songs with her, but it probably will not be so bad after all. That's it. Just something to think about. And with that >roster of acts (generously noted at the link) that they have been involved >with, yikes. okay this is ridiculous...i mean, above all (musician, singer, "indie queen") i consider liz phair a Song-Writer. Sure she has a great voice and she knows her way around some pretty fucked up/nifty guitar chords - but it's her songs themselves that I fall in love with, and her insanely unique song-writing style. i don't mind it when an unlikely artist leans a little on the poppy side for a few songs, or a little country or a little electronica here and there - but if liz is gonna put out an album of her singing some bubble gum crap that was manufactured on a production line, then i have to agree - it sounds like we lost liz. it pretty much goes against anything i've ever thought that liz stood for, which is a girl in her bedroom w/ a guitar and 4 track being as raw and real as possible. if she is going to hand over the song writing to someone else (even if it is only a few songs), then that's just a bloody joke... which brings me to my next thought - first of all, i've never seen an album that isn't even released yet (possibly not even finished) get such bad reviews as the new liz album. i am wondering if liz is reading/aware of the bad vibe her "creative endeavors" are creating and if she suspects that even her fans are raising eyebrows at her - or if she even cares for that matter. i mean, i can't think of a greater concentration of hardcore, tight, loyal and long time liz phans than the ones on this list - and even we are starting to roll our eyes... i mean, we're her fan base!! what does that say? shit...how depressing... again, i'm still not going to knock her - if she is writing the songs i can't see them being bad...this truly is a wait and see situation i guess.. waiting to see, dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Oct 2002 16:16:29 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: new matthew sweet i know there are some fans of matthew sweet on here - i was pretty hyped when i found out about this: "To Understand: The Early Recordings of Matthew Sweet" (includes "Tainted Obligation," an early '80s duet with Michael Stipe under the guise of Community Trolls) and it's slated for an october 1st release...did anyone get it yet? i knew he was having a new album out this year - but A) i didn't know it was old stuff and B) i had no clue it was already out!! shit - and it came out TODAY!! let me know if anyone picked it up yet....and if i should. dan ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #196 ************************************
