YES!! it's "All Night Diner" by modest mouse!! How stupid of me!!! the funny thing is - i've owned the damn CD for years! okay - i think this is a pretty good sign that i have a few too many CDs, or i completely burned myself out and left my memory back in 1998.. it was weird, cuz i somehow "knew" the song - but i wasn't sure how... man - - what a relief! the second i read 'modest mouse' i smacked myself in the head! that was seriously keeping me up at night! now i'm on a complete modest mouse kick - for the first time in a while. how great...what puzzles me now is why in the world i have been hearing this song on the radio so much.... by the way - there is another song that's bugging me...something about "fucking like a volcano and you're everything to me"....or something...? anyone remember who might have done that one?? i think it was a girl singer... maybe the donnas? or spice girls? at any rate - thanks again about the modest mouse tune!! laters, dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 12:13:50 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: enough with the open hostility relax, people. enough with the open hostility. there's enough of that in the world today. do i have to write the "EIG" vs. "EOMS" comparative essay to get things turned around here? actually, it'd be a lot easier if each of us took two songs from the respective albums... if you want to vent in the coolest way possible, simply utter Tom Cruise's best line ever (from "Magnolia"): Liz, "i am quietly judging you." i understand the frustration -- there's been plenty of that in my world -- but it will come. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 13:30:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Griffes Subject: matt sharp. > list listen to the rentals? well if yr a fan, as i am, ya might be happy to I dunno...I really like Matt Sharp....but I was reading an interview with him, and he was talking about his new solo album...and he said something like "Do you really need 20,000 Moogs just to tell a girl you love her?" YES, matt, YES! ;) Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 22:10:52 -0400 From: "Velocityboy3" Subject: Another take on Liz Haven't posted in ages but just had to say something after all the recent Liz bashing. I'll just try to address some points as this would be a book if I addressed them all. 1st off it's Liz's career to manage as she sees fit whether we like it or not. Her label has a big say also since they have final say on what gets released. I know she has written more than a few songs dating back 3,4 years so I wouldn't say she was lazy. The Breeders and Elastica were having bigtime drug problems. And the Breeders did release an album. She just put the Amps name on it. Who's to say what Liz's financial situation is? She seems to be doing fine to me. I'll bet she made more on that theme song/commercials than she made in 6 months touring. And how much time did it really take? Not much I'm sure. Liz seems to want to break into Hollywood. What's wrong w/that? Who's to say she should concentrate on music? I sure wish she would but she has to please herself. Also did anyone every figure into the equation she had/has a young child and went thru a divorce. Surely those have taken precedence over her music. Despite all the speculation who really knows what is going on behind the scenes. Maybe Capitol rejected previous efforts. And as far as losing fans I'm sure she has. But gained just as many it would seem. Despite the critical acclaims on EIG and buzz surrounding it fact is WSCE sold just as much. Do we want Liz to keep repeating herself? I've read many slams of her 2nd album from fans of her 1st. There is no such thing as good and bad music IMO. Music like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because it's less complicated or original doesn't make it bad. MY daughter likes Britney Spears and rap. Should I tell her she's a moron for liking it? It's her opinion, nothing else. I love GBV but IMO they release too much stuff. I wish Mr. Pollard would edit some of his work as I can't afford to buy anything he releases. As far as Jase finding something out about Liz which causes him to lose respect that's just pure gossip IMO. May be true but how do you know? I certainly don't believe everything I hear/read. I don't need to respect Liz as a person to like her music anyway. I don't know Liz from Adam and probably never will. I find way too many assumptions made about her. I guess that's what happens when things are slow. And while EIG is my favorite who is to say it's her best. If I recall many on this list named WSCE as their favorite. It's all personal opinion. My favorite song on WSCE is "Love is Nothing" but reading many lists, most don't come close to concurring. I love EIG but don't like Flower as a song at all. That's blasphomy to the rest of the list. More than hearing a new album I just want to see her tour again. I think Liz does just fine for herself dollarwise. She had a couple tour buses last tour. Sleater Kinney works out of a minivan. I saw Krisitn Hersh tooling around w/her family in a Civic. No way Kristin has sold as many records as Liz anyway. I saw Throwing Muses break up because no one was buying their albums. Good news though as they will release 1 in 2003. It's Kristin husband/manager Billy who is the driving force behind her career/website. Kristin is mostly uninvolved outside the music. Point is we can't read into what is on their minds. Example, when Ken Lee was kind enough to press a copy of the WSCE sessions we all figure Liz would have no problem w/it since most of it is unreleased. Fact is we don't know unless she said it. We just assume. Kristin Hersh for example is on record as being dead set against it. Most artists don't seem to mind but how do we assume. Lucinda Williams released 1 album over about a 9 year period but I still love her. Do I wish they were more? Sure. She has picked up the pace lately. Labels also don't want artists to release too quickly. Anything under 2 years most don't like. What bothers me is when Liz was cancelling tour dates left and right years back everyone defended her. Because she doesn't release an album on our timetable she gets slammed. I don't understand it. 1 was a signed contract w/tickets sold that she didn't honor. And gave no reasons as to why. Frankly I felt we were owed 1. Totally unprofessional. There are no promises as to releasing a record. I find it amazing that no one has a bad word about Courtney Love but Liz gets pounded. I love Hole and agree w/many points regarding the record biz and such. I have a real problem we how she seems to slam everyone in the media and then goes ballistic when they respond in kind. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 22:24:05 -0400 From: "Velocityboy3" Subject: In closing Hope my last post wasn't so long it bounced. Probably is but I don't feel like rehashing it. I'm not trying to stir anything up, just giving another viewpoint. I've been on this list quite awhile and know Jase to be a great guy. Very thoughtful, points well thought out. Just that I don't always agree w/him. Knowing you Jason I can't imagine you won't buy her next record when it comes out. Might be skeptical but I'm sure you will buy it. Hope I didn't say anything that was out of line. Mind you I don't agree w/many things Liz has done either. They are her decisions to make though. I would be upset like Jase if she complained of her fans abandoning her. That's the chance she takes. I've got plenty of music/things to occupy my time until she does. Incidently people always seem to ask periodically time 2 time if so and so is touring. Go to Pollstar and sign up for any band you like and it will notify you automatically anytime new dates are posted. I swear by it. A big shout out to Katie B. Make sure you post from time 2 time. I just remembered I never posted my name on the last post.
