Oh, what a wonderful thing to wake up to---a tempest in a teapot with a little bit of anti-pop rage on side, like bacon and eggs. Mmm, breakfast. Odd rambling aside, to the points: 01. If this rumored new album is similar to "C'mon, C'mon", and our Miz Phair comes across like Sheryl Crow plus a couple of dirty words, well, shelve the album and hang it up. Besides being utterly banal and a waste of thirteen bucks, "C'mon, C'mon" was about as musically engaging as a root canal. I bought the thing on release date with no regrets, but at least I got it cheap at a K-Mart. It's like a French army rifle---for sale, never used, dropped once. It's joined her hideous live album in exile---don't even really recognize that they exist. It's getting to the point that as far as I'm concerned, the last remnants of Miss Crow's career were swept away in 1998. 02. Now for some lesser thoughts. I couldn't help but kind of snicker about the Sheryl Crow Maxim thing. C'mon, c'mon---she's about forty and isn't that kind of a looker to begin with. I am amused that it was suggested for Liz Phair to follow the same path. Six or seven years ago, that would have been rather funny, because it would have worked, maybe. ECP herself was a bit of a looker back then, but even so, not in the manner of "hi omg im tanned, siliconed, and so damned stupid i couldnt think my way out of a wet paper bag wanna go shopping?" Reese Witherspoon and J.Ho come to mind. Nevertheless, this really doesn't change the fact that Liz Phair circa 1993 or 2002 is _still_, as I once wisecracked, an MILF. I think I said this to Nora or Meredith one; I'm not sure if the response was howls of disgust or peals of laughter. Given that #WCSE operated like the Imus show, it was probably a little bit of both. The "completely demeaning to women" thing is probably not exactly on the minds of the cover subjects; they're probably laughing as they cash their check or at the targeted demographic who buys Maxim. Bleh, waste of paper and ink anyways. Besides, we're several generations into a culture of "if it feels good, do it" so I doubt say Melissa Joan Hart lost any sleep over her cover shoot for Maxim. This further advancement of cultural decline brought to you by the English, skilled at throwing away a society since 1945. I don't recall the events in question and I'll continue to upbraid Britney Spears for acting like a two-bit whore. It occurred to me that since the stereotypical market for Liz Phair albums is "supposed" to include only women and the so-called 'phag phan', Maxim would be a waste of time anyways... Nevertheless, I disagree with you, Andy Peters. At the same time, thanks for tossing a shoe into a staid orthodoxy. Lame Against the Machine would be proud of you, if they were lucid enough to comprehend. (she likes Pink! haaha - it was an interesting interview - i'm writing the story for a feminist magazine in windsor) but it was a fantastic show - i highly recommend going to see them if they are coming anyone's way - got me pumped up all to hell!! anyway....summer is here - it so needs to be a liz summer... see ya, dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 17:08:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Griffes Subject: another thought >>When Liz releases her new album, I hope she does some sexy photo shoots for Maxim, Stuff, FHM, etc. etc. Her friend Sheryl Crow did it, and Liz has shown she doesn't mind doing ads, so it seems like she'd be willing to do some semi-nude/soft-porn stuff to help promote her record.<< If that was sarcasm it was lost on me. What kind of logic is "She likes doing ads, thus it seems she would be willing to take some clothes off to sell more records". do you think that just because someone is a woman that they should be ready and willing to use their bodies for commercial purposes?!?! what century did you timewarp in from? if you post ignorant stuff like that, then please warp back! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 21:54:35 EDT From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: Re: on my high horse In a message dated 5/28/02 1:28:07 PM Eastern Daylight Time, film_jedi@hotmail.com writes: > im d-lurking here for a second, you said you never wanted to see her nude, > well check out the album cover for her first album, is that nipple i see? > Isn't that ummm.. not Liz, but a friend of hers?
