Unless anyone is relatively new to this list, they've already heard me give this lecture before. This list is not limited to discussing only Liz and her work. Off-topic posting is allowed, within reason. For the most part, if it's music related, I don't have a problem with it. If people decide they want to use the list to talk about political issues, well, there are perhaps better forums for that. Most of the bands that do end up being discussed here are either Liz's peers, artists or bands she's toured or worked with, or of a similar musical style to hers. If we only talked about Liz on here, there'd maybe be about 50 digests a year. And discussing other artists is a great way of discovering new music you might not already know about. I've benefitted from a lot of recommendations that have been made here and have discovered new favorites. As for "ripping" Poe (or any other artist) apart, I find that horribly lame. Same with saying that someone "sucks." It just comes across as being really juvenile. If you can make a valid criticism about an artist and provide a reason for your opinion, I have no problem with it. But at least be able to offer some sort of justification. But ultimately, if you don't like an artist, at least be respectful of the fact that there may be other people here who do. There are a lot of artists who I personally can't stand who are discussed here on a regular basis. Rather than post anything negative about them, I find it better just to not say anything, or talk about artists I do like instead. Why waste time talking about a band you hate when you can be discussing one you love? If I wanted to, I could post a list of bands and artists I dislike and give reasons why, and you can bet it would throw the list into an uproar. Trust me, it would be rather caustic and it would take a while for the list to recover afterwards. But really, what would the point of that be? Also, to quote from the welcome letter everyone should receive when they join the list (and yes, I do realize it needs updating): "Flames are not encouraged and have no place on the list. If I see any messages like this, I will ask that the authors of such posts take the matter to private email to save it from cluttering up and being disruptive to the list. Feel free to disagree with or offer constructive criticsim regarding anything that has been posted, but do keep it friendly. There is no need for flames or personal attacks." And ultimately, not to power trip or anything, but as the list moderator, it's up to me to decide what can and cannot be discussed here. It's not for anyone else to dictate. I would have pleasure to introduce there those people who want to "continue to bash Poe". The APs there would surely appreciate. But it is also a perfect example of a patronizing "cooler >than you" attitude and that's just bullshit. and this is new to the list? let's face it - the whole reason this started is because there were fans of poe and anti-fans of poe and people got mad that someone else said their favorite singer sucks. so stupid. i could damn Fred Durst or britney spears to hell, and say they stink to high heaven and compare their music to the sound of farts on this list and I don't think anyone would have made as a big a stink over it as they did when some poor person said they didn't like poe. shit - heaven forbid! at one point - i even got attacked by someone (a personal attack to my character and stuff I do in my life) and i don't even not-like poe! I do like her! Haunted was one of my top 5 favorite albums that year! like - -excuse me for hating her first album! i feel like a dick for even putting this post in and dragging it out even more. poe might very well be the biggest genius to ever enter into the music business - or she could have been a secret-gap-shopper who slept her way to a record contract. i highly doubt both. it's sad when the dialogue gets to the point of people saying "yer singer suuucks neener-neener-poo-poo!" and: "No she doesn't! She's amazing and cool and great - shut up and go away - you suck and you think yer so cool!" so changing the subject - i saw the cowboy junkies last night and they were pretty good. my first time seeing them. i only have two albums - and the show was really a night for the hardcore, long-time fans. they sang a minimal amount of hits and they did lots of rare songs, b-sides, covers or just really cool album tracks. they sounded great. pete, mike and margo were tighter than ever and the dude on harmonica and guitar (shit...i forget his name) was bloody fantastic!! i highly recommend seeing them, it was really mellow and psychedelic. the opening act was great too - it was a married couple Jennie and Rich(?) Stern..or Stearn..but they were pretty damn good too..a little bit hope-sandoval-ish. still anxiously awaiting the new liz album - or any sign of life from liz...god that situation sucks about capitol. it kinda makes me see liz a bit different too... i never knew if she left matador for capitol or what, i thought it was a stupid move if she did, but at the same time, i thought if anything - capitol would promote her better...but forced to leave...yikes. that really blows. maybe we'll get a few bitchy songs about being pushed around by the bigger people from her. who would have thought that "an evening with..." would turn into "a few years without..." dan ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #97 ***********************************
