I used to loathe Poe too. I heard her first album HELLO was fantastic back in the day and bought it and was thoroughly disappointed. At the time, the whole "angry white girl" image was out in full, trendy force - and I know lots of female singers didn't even care for that title much - but the way it appeared to me - Poe was like - grasping for it desperately, trying to catch a ride on the latest schtick. And then - when that whole scene was done - i never really listened to her album, nor did I ever expect to see anything from her again. I figured she was a one hit wonder..who never really was, anyway. Then when HAUNTED came out - I got to review it for a magazine and I was like "oh goody...i can really rip on her now.." and i listened to it...and loved it....and it was like - one of my favorite albums of that year!! i was soo floored by how cool the idea, concept was - and how much her songwriting matured - and she was SOOO involved in the production of it - everything. I was so impressed. I still hate her first album, I think she seems very image-aware and public-aware, aside from maybe 3 songs - none of them do anything for me. It's like going through the scrap book of a girl who should probably be writing better poems at her age, if she wants to make a career out of it. But her second one truly seems from the heart. I don't think she gave a shit about how anyone perceived her or the material in it, it was so personal and it seemed really....REAL...whereas her first one struck me as like - an "alterna-singer" for all the pop fans out there... you know what i mean... like - the people who would be like "Oh..i like really unknown, underground stuff...like Poe.." and everyone would role their eyes and think 'oh brother...' I don't know..it was a combo of how she was marketed too and that ridiculous "Angry Johnny" song, "I wanna kill you...I wanna blow you. Away." Like - geez. Clever, Poe. Very clever. The cheesey dolphin song got on my nerves - I kinda liked Fly Away and Junkie & That Day - that's it. She just struck me as a dipshit - I am guessing I was wrong - because I think HAUNTED really proved she has some true talent - and I'm looking forward to her next release (whenever that will be). I can't say I put her up with Liz Phair or Tori Amos though. I'd put Sinead, PJ Harvey or Kim Deal up with Liz & Tori - but not Poe. I'd put Poe in the Garbage/Veruca Salt/Matthew Sweet/Juliana Hatfield group - - pretty damn good - but not exactly Rock 'N Roll royalty. but whatever - don't wanna offend anyone who does like her - just an opinion.. dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 06:22:32 -0700 (PDT) From: p T h R r E e N a T k Subject: Re: Liz Poe I *STILL* loate WEEZER and many of the other bands that *some people* tend to ramble on about with ridiculously long and OFF-TOPIC emails on this list. Just when I was about to add my 2 cents about Poe, Dan speaks up & says exactly what I wanted to say. But much more eloquently. I too am not a huge fan of "Hello"... I didn't even buy it until *after* I fell in love with "Haunted". "Haunted" is one of my all-time favorite albums & I have pretty much worn out my copy of it. Even so, there are a few songs on it that aren't all that great either. However, I think it is a huge step forward from her first album & it'll be interesting to see where she goes from here. Another thing is that the album is related to her brother's book, "House of Leaves", which is AWESOME & "Haunted" really has moments that chill me to the bone as a result. So while I'd put "Haunted" up there with "Exile in Guyville" as a desert island disc, Poe hasn't achieved (for me) Liz or Tori status.
