I haven't been on this list long, so I realize this may have been mentioned: 2001 was one of the worst years in history for the music industry. I am sure if someone is trying to put some sounds together, like Liz, and has been put in the dead-end category of 'alternative' music, it may be extraordinarily difficult to feel any confidance about whatever you might be working on. And this could go back a few years. I like all her stuff, but unlike most poeple, apparently, I think she has actually gotten better over the years. Yeah, the first stuff was more 'raw,' or whatever, but you can't stay a teenager forever, and her melodies and insights, and the combining of melodic lines, has all improved with time. WCSE is the best of all her stuff, musically. That's all. - Dewaine Yahoo! And I have different reasons for loving them both, but I do. As for waiting, well I don't think Michael Penn would lie to his fans when he says that he's been 'working non-stop' on Liz's next album. So something is happening, and I can wait. If I can wait the 5-6 years between Til Tuesdays Everything's Different Now and Aimee Mann's Whatever, the three years between Whatever and I'm With Stupid, and then another 3 years for Magnolia and Bachelor #2, then I can wait for Liz. And really it could be worse, when you think of all the label problems Aimee Mann has had over the last ten years, Liz has had it relatively easy. Whatever the reason for this wait are, and I will say too that waiting for her to focus on music is rather annoying, she's changed and music maybe is not what she's focused on right now. But she will, otherwise I don't think Michael P would have signed on to this. It's the record of a girl who sometimes remembers that she once was LIZ PHAIR... but is not Liz Phair that much then... though I love some of its songs, it's not my favourite record... it's somehow "transparent"... That's the opinion I had a few days after buying it, as soon as it came out, and still have nowadays... especially, now that I know "blood keeper", "russian girl", which were intended to be on WCSE (they were on the wcse sessions, at least), and were much better than some wcse songs... (uncle alvarez is a sheryl-crow-like song, no ???) I hope the new/next/forthcoming/utopic Liz Cd include some things like "conversation overheard...", "firewalker" or "bars of the bed"... And "Blood Keeper", of course... ...but I'm not waiting for another "polyester bride"... Wanna know the scary thing? I joined this list WAAAAY back in the very beginning - the first year Jase started it - and I was in college. I'm still in college. Love always, Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 10:38:43 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: holy cow weezer!!! Okay - I'm listening to my promo copy of the new WEEZER "maladroit" album - i'm reviewing it for a magazine - but i had NO CLUE that they are already finishing up ANOTHER album which they are simply calling "ALBUM 5" right now. That's NUTS! Maladroit isn't even out yet!!! Let this be an example to you, Liz. Just kidding :) dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 18:41:55 EDT From: TheCowSay@aol.com Subject: "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into ('Cause It's a Steady Job)" / The Strokes I've only been a Liz Phair fan for like...a year, I guess. Maybe a little longer. Anyway...I don't own a copy of the Girlysound demos. And...up until like two months ago, I was under the impression that the tapes were more or less a rough version of Exile in Guyville. Since then trying to get a good copy off ebay, but until that happens, I'll be downloading the songs onto my computer...which is sorta tedious since I don't have a cable connection. Anyway...my point is...that I hadn't heard the song "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into ('Cause It's a Steady Job)" until last night. And I was listening to it last night, and I was all "Huh? I've so...heard this before...", but it really wasn't all that weird since I had also just heard "Blackmarketwhitebabydealer" which borrowed it's tune from like..."My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" or something like that...so I figured "Can't Get Out..." was sorta like that. Anyway...I listened to it again today, and I placed it: "When It Started" by the Strokes. (If you have the CD it's like...track 9... That "I don't mind... I don't mind, 'cuz it's free" song.) I'm not accusing the Strokes of plagerism or anything...or maybe I am...but...yeah...does anyone else hear the similarity in the melodies? The difference in instruments is distracting...but...yeah. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #81 ***********************************
