I think this Liz/Sheryl pairing is the most depressing thing I've ever seen. Sorry if I totally alienate everyone here, but I fear the Liz I fell in love with is gone forever. There's a mention of Liz at the end of the description on the fest site: http://www.sffs.org/fest02/titleDetail.asp?title_id=114 This review from the Bay Guardian praises Liz: Fri/26 Cherish (Finn Taylor, USA) Berkeley-based Finn Taylor's first film since the great Dream with the Fishes is a more contrived indie comedy that both cleverly subverts and remains ultimately limited by its claustrophobic premise. Abducted at gunpoint in her car by a masked assailant one drunken night, S.F. digital animator and terminal wallflower Zoe (Robin Tunney) then finds herself up for vehicular manslaughter and no one believes her story, since the masked man has disappeared without a trace. Confined to a Mission Street flat via electronic "bracelet" device until her trial date, Zoe works on self-improvement (going from geekdom to babedom en route) and social skills while trying to clear her name. The pic's delightful setup sparked in part by the sly turns of Jason Priestley and Liz Phair as glib coworkers promises more than the eventually predictable, then improbable plot delivers. Nonetheless, good performances (including Tim Blake Nelson's as Zoe's police custodian) and a cheerfully polished presentation make Cherish easy to take. 6:45 p.m., Kabuki. So anyway, the song "Soak up the Sun" starts - and I'm like 'oh cool - i like this song...' - but it is an instrumental version...there were no Sheryl vocals. ANyway - at the chorus part of the song - whose voice pops in the speakers loud and clear - but Liz Phair. I'm guessing the graphic equalizer was off - and the bit that had Sheryl's main vocals was turned down - so all the listeners heard was the backing tracks - so in a way - it was featuring liz on lead vocals!! It would be like - a minute of music - and then - LIZ doing the chorus!! It was soo cool. She sings it MUCH lower - and it is SOOOOOO Liz Phair when you hear it - like it really reminded me of "big tall man" kinda vocals with the whole "YEs I'm broooooadcasting myself..." kinda stufff... it was just kinda cool - you could REALLY hear Liz. Anyway - if anyone has the new SHeryl Crow - play with the equalizer - it's almost like hearing a new liz song :) Hearing it that way made me think how interesting it would have been if they had done it as a duet, rather than Liz on backing vocals. I think it would have made the song a billion times more interesting... Sheryl Crow ranting and chanting in a sing-song voice about life - and then Liz Phair's deeper vocals drumming in about telling everyone to ligthen up.... could have been so cool. Could have.
