(thank God for the Shins record.) i crave great new Liz Phair music almost as much as i do the original first 27 minute take of the Beatles "Helter Skelter." almost. so, i apologize for being cranky. it's not personal. i'm not angry with her. i couldn't possibly fault her for any of the life changes that have gone on in her life and the effect that they've had on her music. even though i referred to her as "our Liz," i understand that she's not here on earth for the sake of our ownership of her "product." i don't know how else to end this message, so i'll just grovel and plead and whimper and fall to my knees and beg the lord of music to have mercy on us all and have something released before i go nuts. sorry. the public high school student teaching gig has really destroyed much of my patient self. by the way, liz, happy birthday! chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 01:24:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Griffes Subject: off topic, maria mckee. Hi. since i know there are more maria mckee fans on this forum than anywhere else i'm around (and i really dont know any mckee/lj fans in real life), i just wanted to post that she finally updated her website (www.mariamckee.com) and according to it she's looking for a label to put out her new cd...also, she's rehearsing w/ her band for upcoming gigs and asked what songs everyone wants to hear :) yay! Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 09:53:29 -0400 From: Jennifer Luu Subject: Work Stuff Again... DarkSideoftheMoon laughed at my comment that I don't listen to any artists who put making money before making music. Fair 'nuff. But I was very conscious of the way I worded that statement. I know that most artists at least have money in mind. But I didn't say that all the artists I listen to don't care about money-- I said that the artists I listen to have music in mind when they put out a product, not the money. Additionally...I think I disagree with the comment that all artists think at least a little about money anyway. I really don't think Ani Difranco could care any less about money. Anyway, my point was just that everybody's talking about Liz's lack of work ethic, and the whole point, for me, is that what Liz does ISN'T work for her. She lets the songs come as they come and she lets the releases release as they release. Lastly, it was, indeed, Liz's birthday yesterday, so HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO HER!! I wonder what Nick did for her. :) I played a LIZ TRIBUTE on my college radio show this past Sunday and it was the time of my life. I played the small excerpt of dialogue from the "Fuck and Run" bootleg when she talks about how her friends have kids that listen to her music and they come up with stuff like "Duck and Gun" when they're listening to that classic that we all know and love. Then Iplayed "Fuck and Run" and censored out every single "fuck" and "shit." It was grrrrrreat. Anyway, hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. - -Jennifer ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 15:00:58 -0400 From: "Daaaaan Theman" Subject: to contradict myself I didn't really mean that Liz was being "lazy" per se in my last e-mail. It was simply me venting my frustrations with not having any new material, not even a release date. I think that Liz (while she's admitted to slacking off in the studio) is quite the perfectionist. She has a ton of pressure with this record, and a lot to live up to. I can't imagine what it must feel like to only really be recognised for your first album. Her whole career (of only 3 albums) has consisted of trying to top "exile". I also remember reading interviews with her at the end of her wcse tour where she said that she wants her next record to really be a masterpiece, and a true work of art. Those are some pretty fucking high expectaions. On another note, while Liz has put out only 3 albums in a 10 year period, she puts a lot of songs on those albums. Bjork has put out 5 albums (including "selmasongs") in the past decade, and Liz has still released more material (excluding b-sides) because her albums contain many more songs. Totally off topic, but does anyone ever relate a particular album (by any artist) to a certain time of year? As of last week, I have been listening to "Whip Smart" every day. I guess because I got that album in the spring, I so heavilly relate it to this time of year. Every spring without fail, "whip smart" becomes my favorite album again. Strangely enough, I don't really find it as listenable during fall and winter. Sorry for the long e-mail. - -Dan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 15:48:41 -0500 From: John-Paul Finger Subject: Re: support-system-digest V5 #75 Dan - I'm with you on the new Weezer- it is some greatness, especially being so soon after The Green Album (TGA). A lot of my friends were disappointed with TGA, mostly because they said it was too happy. I'll admit, listening to Pinkerton and Rivers' misery is an amazing thing, but I didn't hold it against TGA. Now with Maladriot though, it seems to lie on both ends of the emotional spectrum - way down there with "Death and Destruction" all the way up to the hopeful "Possibilities". To the list, I highly recommend it, but of course its Weezer so its a grand total of 33 minutes long. I'm also strangely hooked on the No Use For A Name disc that comes out this summer, _Hard Rock Bottom_. Its alright at first, but after a while it really starts to grow on you. I'm (prepare yourself for a big SAT word) enamored with "This Is a Rebel Song". Its by far the most catching since they have a very strong female vocal for the main vocal part... and what can I say, I'm a sucker for strong female vocals =). No matter how lazy anyone may think Liz is, there is at least some other great music out there. I don't think shes lazy though - shes been keeping herself afloat with the divorce, raising a child, and probably dozens of other things that we're not privileged enough to know about. Four years is a long time for such an eagerly anticipated album though, but to go with one of the great word-smiths of our time, Eric Cartman, "You get by, one day at a time." HaloJocelyn, you're my hero =). Lastly, I'm back to lurking. They review Sheryl Crow's C'mon C'mon... and call "Soak Up The Sun" Sheryl Crow's "perfect" imitation of background vocalist Liz Phair. I could see it being a spaceegg tune, I suppose. : ) - -Michael ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 20:05:11 EDT From: LilRussianGirl@aol.com Subject: (no subject) whos tae won yu? ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #76 ***********************************
