Seems like there are 2 trains of thought here. Ones who are angry and see Liz as a somewhat musically nonproductive stay at home mom who is doing everything she can to destroy her career and who must owe the world (and them) something. The other half see it as Liz is awash in whatever occupies Ms. Phair but lets not get demanding or pissed at her and let's enjoy what we have of her work and keep praying for an album and tour sometime this year or next. Count me in the camp of the hopefuls. Jen sez: >I, personally, don't listen to any artists who put making money before making MUSIC. I had to laugh at this (no offense Jen) only because every artist is in it to make money (fame, exposure, advancement) in one way or another. Happy birthday Liz! OK -- I agree with some of you, disagree with some of you. Liz has been a mom and has become an ex-wife in the four years since she finished WCSE. She moved to Los Angeles and has been making her way in the L.A. musician scene. But as so many of us said, the rest of us have jobs, lives that consume us 24-7. What has been consuming her? And never mind what she's done, how has she changed? Divorce and motherhood have a way of putting a different spin on anyone's life. (And truth to tell, we do not know anything about her custody issues, nor how Jim fits into the divorce picture at all.) I've been wondering about the kind of songs she'd write now. I doubt we're ever going to see anything like exile again. She's a completely different person. And never mind that, but *we*, her fans, are all different too. It's been four years alone since WCSE. How have *you* changed since then? When I think about the free-wheeling, show-going, single city girl I was in 1998, and compare it to the married, rural-living, mom-to-be I am right now ... Jesus, so much makes me not the same person I was. My priorities have shifted. Certain things that used to be so important to me have fallen into the category of "couldn't care less." As far as her "attitude" goes, yeah, I admit, I'm a little bothered. Maybe it's because musically speaking, Liz is probably the most "famous" artist I like. And I have seen precious little evidence that she places value in her fans, the ones that made her capable of being this successful. She's always writing songs, working on stuff -- so we hear -- but nothing ever happens. Sure you can blame the record company, but at some point, we need some positive reinforcement. Or at least I do. I'd like to know that she gives a shit that we're sitting here waiting. I admit, I don't care as much about Liz as I used to, partly b/c music and songwriting, from what I've been able to see so far, just don't seem all that important to her. If she really wanted to reach her fans, she'd find a way to do it. Eh. I haven't expressed myself the way I want to, but that's all I'm going to say for now. sandra ps: Whoever mentioned Liz's stage fright, that is so not an issue anymore. I've seen numerous interviews where she mentions her former stage fright in contrast to the statement of how much she loves being onstage now. pps: Last week, on a trip to California, I drove through Manhattan Beach, where Liz lives. I felt so close to her. = ) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 15:21:49 EDT From: AMCFLND1@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V5 #74 Happy birthday, Liz! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 16:00:01 -0400 (EDT) From: "Headache79" Subject: RE: support-system-digest V5 #74 hey all, going to come out of lurking long enough to say "happy birthday" to liz. back to lurk mode, paul "And it feels like I've got something to prove. I have to say - after my first few listens I already like it a million times better than the green self-titled album - and I liked that one quite a bit too. Great album though - between that album and the new Breeders album I have been in sheer music ecstasy for the last month. The new Breeders track "the she" is blowing my mind - and the instrumental tracks on the album are good too!! "huffer" is amazing, "little fury", "son of three", "off you", "put on A side" - all so good. trying to stay postive about new music, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 18:51:04 EDT From: TheCowSay@aol.com Subject: You could've planted a farm... Am I the only one here who doesn't think Exile is her best CD? Like...honestly, I love every song on all of them, and I'd rank them the same. Anyway, my point is, I was listening to Whip-Smart earlier this week, and...I have no idea what the song "May Queen" is about. I remember reading RollingStone's review for Whip-Smart, and it talked about how "May Queen" was "strange" or something like that...and I thought it was weird that they would say anything about it at all...because...I've probably listened to the song a thousand times, and I have no idea what's going on. Maybe I'm just an idiot?...or maybe I'm overanalyzing it. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #75 ***********************************
