The show was Good Morning America, and they said she'd be on the show right after the break. I stuffed the nearest tape into my VCR and managed to tape a short interview with Liz followed by a performance of Alice Springs. I stumbled across the tape this morning (which had never been labeled) and watched for the first time in 7 or 8 years. The interview was OK, but I thought the performance was really special. I captured both onto my computer (each is about 25Mb) and would be glad to share them with anybody who has the bandwidth and space to host them. - -Mumpsimus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 03:11:33 EDT From: Biggerd000@aol.com Subject: right arm wes, where have the years gone?weasel.whers mr.e? wheres jaime? anyone? hello, ya know i have been silent for far too long. wes is right and he is wrong, you see i too am very pissed off with liz, so much so that i dont ever want to hear anything from her. well thats part of me, part of me still has hopes, i must...ive been on this list for years now, so i must. so let liz go on, alot has changed for her, shes not a musician anymore, she is a grown up, has a son, and just maybe doesnt care about releasing anything anymore. so long liz. wes is right because of this- people are perfect until you expect things from them. this is something i have realized, wheather it be a totally cool guy that you like so much and he says he wants to drum for yr band, and never shows up for practice, or someone like liz who we all found escape through and she aint delivering. hey maybe she doesnt want to put out a piece of shit disc like w.c.s.e. and is waiting till she feels her songs and recordings are honest enough and her "expression"...you all know what i mean. well i just wanted to add my two cents to this very large jar full of change dan f. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 07:33:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Gabriel Peterson Subject: Priorities I know that Liz Phair's purpose in life, relative to us, is for her to make albums. But, when it comes to tragic events in the music industry, her hiatus doesn't quite rank in the top 1000. So far she hasn't had to check herself into Betty Ford, she's not making it on Entertainment Tonight for getting in a fight at a club, she hasn't been discussing her lovelife to everyone who will listen and wearing a different man on her arm at any event she can. I would choose Liz Phair's "laziness" over the Breeders drug problems or Nirvana's no-longer-alive problems any day. People are talking about what she's accomplished in the past year but here is a person that has created one of the best albums of that decade. She has always had stagefright so I'm sure she has little desire to tour and she has a child. She has been successful enough to have choices and she seems to have chosen to put work on the backburner unless it's something interesting and different. That being said, I do wish that she said she was taking a few years off so that we wouldn't be waiting around a couple years expecting the album to come out in just a few months. Gabe Yahoo! So there's been a lot of talk lately about LIZ being lazy, not being prolific enough, whatever. Sorry it's taken a while for me to respond, but I do have thoughts... Liz Phair never wanted to be a rock star. She wrote music in college, her friend dared her to send it in to a record label and then crazy cats like us decided she was brilliant. She couldn't help any of that. Her severe stage fright was consistent with this fact, as when she first started writing music, she never had any intention of playing it in front of hundreds of adoring fans. We know this. She was pressured to release "Whip-smart" soon after "Exile" and the songs during that period were forced, hard for her to write, etc. The cover of "Rolling Stone" declared her a "Rock Star" and she was thrust into the music industry world way faster than she ever intended to be. She became very jaded with it (i.e. "Nashville"). We know this. For me, Liz Phair is a musician because she loves the music, NOT because she is pressed to sell a product. This is one of the reasons why I love her so. The fact that she hasn't released a CD in what is approaching 4 years, simply communicates to me this very fact-- that she does NOT care about sales and getting her product to the masses. Sure, as a fan, I am saddened by this, but I consider it a privilege to listen to her music. She does not have to share any of what she does with anybody and if she hadn't sent her music to Matador all those years ago, I never would've been able to experience her genius in the first place. Liz Phair is a musician. And I have no doubt that since we heard from her last, she has been writing tons of songs and singin' 'em everyday-- for herself, for her friends and for her son. Liz Phair makes music for the sake of the music, not for the sake of her fans, not for the sake of Capitol Records and not for the sake of sales. This is actually related to the whole issue of "selling out," which needless to say, I don't think she has and I don't think she ever will. All in all, I consider myself incredibly lucky to have my hands on as much of her material as I do. And if she releases something else, I'll be happy as hell. But the simple fact that she's not yet ready to share herself and her music with a bunch of people who she doesn't know, does NOT in any way, shape or form, make her "lazy" or "without work ethic." It makes her unprolific in the context of the music industry that is only about making money but I, personally, don't listen to any artists who put making money before making MUSIC. I won't cry any tears for her if Capitol drops her because these 4 year spans between albums is killing her career. The four year span between whipsmart and WCSE lost more fans than WCSE brought in and I'm sure this new album will be the same story. She's digging her own grave, as far as I am concerned. Secondly, I was searching around over at ebay for Liz stuff and came across this. Tae Won Yu is selling his gold record presented to him for Exile in Guyville. Bid at $150. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=858853786 Description RIAA Certtified Gold Record for Liz Phairs debut album: EXILE IN GUYVILLE. The plaque reads: Presented to TAE WON YU to commemorate RIAA certified sale of more than 500,000 copies of the Matador Records album, compact disc and cassette EXILE IN GUYVILLE. It was presented to me by Gerard from Matador for my little part in supporting Liz in her early days. (Google us, it must be true) Though Im grateful for the acknowledgement Im leaving all material possessions behind as I begin my vision quest with my cat. So bid high and have a framed evidence of your devotion to hang in your Liz Phair shrine. Thought this might be of some interest to Liz fans out there with some disposable cash. I might have actually bid on this thing if i really cared that much anymore. robert ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ Yahoo! And speaking of the rules, or lack of rules and the popularity of art, unfortunately, it seems to me that the way the music industry is behaving right now, it's really not a condusive climate for a Liz Phair comeback. It's really sad but a just few short years ago we had Lilith Fair, a celebration of strong women in Rock, and now instead we have Britney Spears, who is the epitome of women in Schlock. I know Sheryl Crow just released an album, but it seems like she is trying to compete image-wise with these young female musical acts and is trying to take off as much clothing as they do. I get that idea from the recent discussions on this list about the article in the men's magazine she did in which she posed in very provocative outfits in the photo spread. At least Liz wasn't wearing a fur bikini in those GAP X-mas commercials. But then again, if it wasn't for the current rash of Britney and Destiny's Child and their knockoffs, and all the whittling down of fabric on their bodies combined with the playing of terrible music, if Sheryl and Liz wanted to pose for men's magazines wearing few garments, it would probably seem a whole lot more empowering for women. I hope that made sense. The ridiculous summer weather here is kind of frying my brain. But anyway, I'll keep my Liz music needs satisfied by playing Exile in Guyville, Whipsmart, Whitechocolatespaceegg and Juvenilia over and over and whenever Liz is ready to release new music, that's fine. Let her explore whatever other avenues she might be exploring right now. If she can get somewhere in the film industry, good for her, because I think one of her original aspirations was to be an actress. And if she decides to never release another album again, that would suck, but it would be her choice and her decision. It is too bad that so many of us have become bitter and almost mad at Liz for her lack of "production" in the commercial music world! Finding "reasons" for this seems pointless..blah-blah-blah, etc..Is it motherhood? Lack of creativity? Trouble with her record company? "Laziness?"..that's too much to bear..My thoughts: Leave it..leave it..Relish what she has done for music and in particular, for other female artists..and honor her personal life, whatever it may be. I can't help but think that some of you have lost touch with her..thus this finger-pointing stuff..and have forgotten that there are no rules when it comes to art, no matter how popular it may become, and how many people may want to buy it!
