["Dana Polachowski" Subject: GBV vs. MBV Jason, did you take a while to figure out all the nuances of your statement? if that was off the cuff, that was brilliant. if you painstakingly put that comment together, that was really well done. it's nice to see -- as a student teacher teaching high school English to a number of kids who could really give a shit - -- someone using the language and references as well as you did right there: 1) going for the obvious: referencing some band ~ GBV ~ that has many releases over the last few year, while My Bloody Valentine's last release was, what, 11 years ago now? 2) someone who is more "guided by voices" would be someone who is more inspired (or more, for the lack of a more politcally correct word, "crazy," i guess, which has nothing to do with your comment) 3) there's some strange GBV and MBV thing going on there 4) being "less My Bloody Valentine" sort of conjures up your meeting with her (to me), like she was once a Valentine of yours, but now she's a bloody valentine...ok, this is a stretch, perhaps. i have to tend to agree with Jason...Liz, you gotta get SOMETHING out there...an EP of outtakes from your sessions or something...your 5 worst tracks that won't be on the album....something! i hate to sound so selfish :) chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 02:22:28 EDT From: Dermich@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V5 #69 >What have you done in the last four years? Not to make this a pissing contest, but in the last four years a LOT of people have accomplished a LOT of stuff. Myself, I've: Recorded and released 3 LPs, 3 EPs, 5 one-off singles and about 20 remixes for other musicians Written a book and had it published Written about 100 articles for the newspaper Designed six sets for theatrical productions Finished 5 major paintings This was on top of having a regular 50-hour-a-week job. If you REALLY care about your art, you keep it current. Period. That's the first thing you learn if you go to a real art school: If you don't keep using it, you're not an artist any more. Sorry, but Liz is being really, really lazy. During the mid '70s, Bowie put out an album every year, along with a WORLD tour for a lot of them. In the '80s, almost EVERY artist had to keep up that pace. And I dare say both of those decades produced more memorable music than the "album every 3 years" artists of the '90s. I love Liz's stuff, but she's certainly not focused on her career or fans right now. I happen to think 30-year-old women are really really hot (not just because I'm thirty-plus), and Liz has gotten even more attractive as she's gotten older. And all this stuff about Liz being lazy is fucking bullshit. I suggest everyone who has said Liz is lazy, unproductive, unprolific, or whatever just shut the fuck up. Andy in Decatur Ga. Yahoo! But did you undergo a divorce, a cross-country move, and an adjustment to single motherhood at the same time? Plus I doubt you've had to deal with the pressures of fame. Let's cut her a little slack, guys, and stop whining. If you really love Liz, you can just put Exile in the cd player and it'll make the wait a little more bearable. :) I absolutely adore Liz Phair and respect her every decision...I'm really excited about the new album, but I won't let the long wait damage my high opinion of her. It's about the MUSIC, guys, the MUSIC! :) Quoting Dermich@aol.com: > >What have you done in the last four years? > > Not to make this a pissing contest, but in the last four years a LOT of > people have accomplished a LOT of stuff. Jase might be correct in noting that Liz hasn't been all that prolific and seems to lack musical motivation these days. But let's not call her lazy. And I'm positive I'm missing something. This whole thread made me chuckle so much while reading it - I have no idea why. I mean - when you look at it this way - it does look like she did quite a bit. But the HILARIOUS thing about it is - what do we have to show for it? Dick-all!!! HAHAHAHAHA!! I don't know why it makes me laugh so much! Like - I've never seen such a "hard worker" with absolutely ZILCH-all to show for it than with Liz. Kinda funny - I'm not attacking the person who wrote that above piece - it just really made me realize like, "Shit..she has done a lot I guess...yet it's still been 4 years since I've held any kind of new release in my hands." Maybe it's kinda cool. Liz is becoming obscure and not as accessible (although - I don't know what makes you more accessible than appearing in a Gap commercial) but maybe she'll become one of those fun artists where you have to hunt for stuff on. That's how it was before the internet. Do you remember - before the days when we could punch in our favorite singer's name and get a list of websites - how EXCITED we would get when we caught a snippet about our favorite band in a magazine or on TV? Or how excited we'd be when we'd see our favorite singer's name on the "coming soon" board in our favorite record store? Like - I know it's easier to be a music fan these days because even the most obscure album can be downloaded within seconds online - but it was a little bit more exciting before. When I was 12 I used to cut out every single article I ever saw on the Bangles and put it in a scrap book - along with a list I kept of their releases, singles, videos, side projects - etc. In a way - that was like my way of making a web page, you know? It was fun - - it was like a hunt - searching magazines and archives for anything to do with the Bangles. Soo cool. But oh well - on with the times - Hey - do you think we, as a Liz Phair list, should start getting active?? Like - send in a petition or something to Liz - DEMANDING a new album?? :) :) :) of course I'm saying this as a half-joke - but wouldn't it be funny? If we were like - to hell with her taking her sweet time - let's put the pressure on her and be a bunch of assholes about this!!!! :) Oh well - a boy can dream, right? I'm kidding anyway, but i wonder what capitol would say.... laters, dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 8:35:6 -0700 From: "Dana Polachowski" Subject: "hmmmm, i am SO tired...." "what have we done in the past four years"? please.... i think it's more like "what have we done in the past four *weeks.*" good grief.... i think prolly 95% of us have gotten up in the morning and dragged our sorry asses in to work for *at least* 40 hours a week, whether we wanted to or not.... or to school *and* work. or, like jase said, worked on a degree. or even doing all of that while raising kids. and, don't get me wrong, i know those bags under her eyes are courtesy of her son, not the handiwork of some makeup artist, but, still, come on. i know for me, i don't have many chances to wiggle my can wearing tons of black eyeliner in front of a camera, get paid a few thousand dollars, and then call it a day. yeah, now *that* is stress.... i'd point out that, ok, she went through a divorce and a big move to the west coast, traumatic times and all, but, again, people like you and me go through that and STILL have to haul our butts in to get the job done. so, umm, no..... ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V5 #70 ***********************************
