I hardly think any artist who says that they write music for themselves is being truthful at all. It's just something nice to say. After all, if someone only wrote songs for themselves, why would they bother releasing an album at all? Myself as a music consumer, I don't need any artistic integrity or deep lyrics. I just want music that sounds good. In defense of all the pop artists like Britney Spear, NSync..., it's drivel, we know it's drivel, we don't expect anything more and we can enjoy (or not) for exactly what it is. Ok, so I though I really missed the "five." Well hot damn, it was the best show I've seen in a while... With the exception of the Breeders a while back at Trees. they kicked fucking ass. But anyhow, back to Ben... It was just him and his piano, and he totally rocked the venue! I was right next to the stage, and when he remarked that the past couple of nights he had played the shit out of hands I told him i'd kiss them and make them better for him. ;) He looked at me and smiled, and actually let me! I know he's married... but come on! Anyways, I know this is pretty off topic but it was cool as hell. What a sense of humor he has! His opening act was "Almost Willy" a damn good Willy Nelson impersonator. Quite interesting. He said that when he was driving from Austin to Dallas his bus was behind Willies bus, and he got the cell phone number off the back of the Willie's bus... Called him and they pulled over at a rest stop and worked out a deal. It was damn funny the way he told it. Anyways, anyone have any thoughts on wether or not Liz will go on tour if (er, when...) her new album comes out? Erin Try FREE Yahoo! I know I definitely don't love alanis - I don't hate her either. Her music is the type that my brain just doesn't have any kind of receptor for. She goes right up with two other bands (who oddly enough, are also Canadian) Tragically Hip and Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) ANd I am not knocking any of these bands - I think they are all very talented in their own right and can sing and write decent songs and are great live - but for some reason - I listen to their songs and they just do NOTHING for me. Like - nothing whatsoever. Negative or positive. I find myself day dreaming when I pop in one of their CDs. My friends always say that I "should" love these three bands just because they are so great and I love lots of people similiar to them. So I get all excited and think "Today...I am going to become an ALanis fan...or Hip fan or Sarah fan..." and I borrow their CD from friends, get their CD in and play it - and I just start zooming off somewhere else and I have to snap back and think "Shit...focus Dan! FOCUS DAMMIT!" SO i've given up. THe one song I liked by Alanis is "Uninvited" and it got overplayed to death and the rest just bounce right off me and leaves no impression. I thought I liked her "Hands Clean" single - but I realized I don't. It's just - a song. Like Lenny Kravitz "Fly Away" - it's just a song that I am going to associate with this time in my life - but it has absolutely no impact except that it has gotten a bit overplayed. People always say I just don't give these bands a chance - but I sooo do!! Like - I've tried the "do housework while listening" approach. I've tried the - "lay in bed with candles and/or atmospheric lighting" approach. I've tried the "get stoned and finally see what I've been missing" approach and I've tried the "I'm just gonna pop this in and experience it for what it is" approach. And the CD ends and I can't remember how a single song goes!!! Anyway, that's that. Anyone else have bands that they think are talented, but just can't get into?
