It's interesting that this is brought up. For some reason, I always have a hard time picturing Liz as "angry." LIke - ya - everyone has an angry song - - but when liz was lumped with the whole "angry white girl rocker" (not saying you are doing this - your post just reminded me of it) group (ala Alanis) I don't know...I didn't think she fit in. I never found her angry. I found her more like "Hey everyone...here's the shit and glory of my life...take a listen..." and there are fabulously happy songs (supernova) sexy songs (flower) thoughtful songs (shane) introspective, angry, modest etc etc etc... Like...I never really thought of Liz's songs as angry..any of them. even songs like Divorce Song and Fuck and Run....even FUCK OR DIE...I think it is just a girl with a really hiliarious/genius sense of humour - and a little bit of her saying "shit...got fucked over again" or in some cases "I did the fucking over this time..." You know? I don't know..I only bring it up because I have heard Liz referred to several times as an "angry" song writer...and I don't see her as being any angrier than any other songwriter...I don't know...can anyone point out more angry stuff that liz has done, so maybe I can "begin to see the light?" Her songs are empowering, for sure..but angry? Hmm...just seems a bit out of place for our quirky, and sometimes geeky Liz... dan. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 05:30:24 EST From: Juvenilia@aol.com Subject: What She Was (Possibly) Thinking I don't know if its ever been discussed or not, but I found myself listening to an old compilation CD I made back when 'whitechocolatespaceegg' came out. On it, I added Liz's "Go On Ahead" and while listening to it, I got to thinking about where Liz was emotionally when she wrote the song. Made me think that perhaps her and her ex-husband were first having their marital problems around that time. Sure, I know Liz's lyrics are generally very abstract and it's probably not best to analyze each word for what they appear to be, but I couldn't help but think that perhaps she was pointing to this particular issue. I went ahead and posted the lyrics below for anyone interested to draw their own conclusions. GO ON AHEAD You go on ahead, honey You have a good time there You make me feel funny I'm no ordinary lover or a friend I believe we have things to do I believe in myself and I believe in you I believe when I sleep you are near to me When you sleep I am near to you You walk out of the room with your hands so deep in your pockets, I don't recognize you You say you're a ghost in our house and I realize I do think I see through you It's a death in our love that has brought us here It's a birth that has changed our lives It's a place that I hope we'll be leaving soon And I fear for the year in his eyes And it goes around in circles; one night is lovely, the next is brutal And you and I are in way over our heads with this one, it's hard To admit it, but you hold me and I can't feel you We hurt but we smile I promise I'll make it back when the summer has warmed me awhile As far as Liz teaming up with Sheryl Crow, I think it's great. I've read or heard that Sheryl has always been a big fan of Liz and Aimee Mann. I know she wanted them both to be part of Lilith Fair from the beginning and I always thought it was cool to hear that come from such a commercially successful songwriter. I'm looking forward to the outcome.
