I did have some suggestions myself, but only a few. Here's what I came up with: 01. TBA (I always remember reading that when I read an article about Liz Phair's forthcoming albums -- no matter which one was to be released.) 02. blackvanillaearthchicken (I saw someone post this hilarious parody to WCSE on this list a looooong time ago. I thought it was great.) 03. Hurricane Elizabeth (which I've decided to call the return of my Liz website a.k.a. The Slick Divide) 04. Ole! (a subtle cry to get back with Matador) 05. Gone West Of course, not as clever as Dan's, but felt I should submit them all the same. Sometimes, Robbie www.faithlessangel.com/mttw/ "Sometimes I wish that I was a wrestler A Mexican wrestler in a red, vinyl mask. And I might grab you and bodyslam you And maybe cause physical harm. Ah, music does indeed bring the people together. trent - -----Original Message----- From: Dermich@aol.com Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 01:31:42 EST To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: Damn Sam > Talk about variety in out top 10 lists. So things are moving along. He may be sending another message to his list over the holidays, so if he says anything else I'll pass it along. (I met Cyndi Lauper during what must have been one of the greatest nights of my entire life. I also recently sprained my knee and i am on crutches. I am a librarian at a university during exam time and i cant do ANYTHING and i am swamped with work and i have this disgusting feeling of uselessness. it is so overwhelming! AHH!) anyways. There was soooo much great new music this year, i can't really stick to 10. Here's my list. and why. why is important :) KRISTIN HERSH: Sunny Border Blue. I have never related to music as much as Kristin's...this album especially. Hearing Kristin's songs is like having someone finally whisper in your ear: "it's okay...me too" TORI AMOS: Strange Little Girls. My least favorite album by tori, yet it's still at the top of my list! Definitely an important political piece that I never would have expected to come out of Tori. THE BUTCHIES: 3. Why aren't they the biggest most famous band out there? Ohhh yeah cuz they're lesbians that yell a lot. While I will always have a special place in my heart for the classic "Are we not femme?", i think that this is by far their best record. Only problem with this is it's over waaay too quickly. LE TIGRE: Feminist Sweepstakes. I was unsure about this at first because it wasn't as danceable or sing-a-long-y as the first one. But after a week or so I just felt so fucking empowered from listening to this cd (TGIF, Keep On Livin). I definitely feel like this is a band effort as opposed to a Kathleen-and-band type deal. JD is awesome. HEATHER NOVA: South. This is an odd pop album. It doesn't really sound too much like Heather's other stuff. I was skeptical because there's one song called "talk to me," another called "like lovers do" (is that a nod to the eurythmics or just random?) and then the single is called "I'm no angel" (which is alluding to "maybe an angel," and isn't a dido knockoff, thank god). But, as anything that comes out of her, it's absolutely beautiful. ANI DIFRANCO: Revelling/Reckoning. Took me much longer to get into than any of ani's other cd's, but it finally set in. Sometimes I think it's a pretty bland effort, but if you pick through it you can find some of her best songs ("marrow," and the song about the girl telling her lover she has to stay monogamous w/ her partner...whatever it's called). Her most heartfelt since Dilate. ROSE POLENZANI: s/t. Rose's music is just achingly gorgeous. She is the closest thing i have found to joni mitchell...but queerer :). This is a bit louder than I'm used to from her, but it works nicely. AMY RAY: Stag. When I got this I thought it was the best thing ever released! the cooler indigo girl, The Butchies, Joan Jett, Rock*a*teens, it just plain rocks. Now I'm totally burnt out on it. but i can't forget how happy i was those first few weeks with it. DOLLY PARTON: Little Sparrow. Siiiiiiiiigh. That voice. Very few things make me feel as comfortable and secure as Dolly Parton. Who knew I would like a collective soul song? guess it just had to be sang the right way. MELISSA FERRICK: Valentine Heartache. Hottest CD of the year. "...and all of my friends are queer!" KELLY HOGAN: Because It Feel Good. Something about honkeytonk women, I tell you. If you don't have both of kelly's cds and you like country music, you need to get them, NOW. VOICES ON THE VERGE - this is a live show w/ Rose Polenzani, Erin Mckeowen, Beth Amsel, and Jess Klein. gorgeous harmonies. would love to see them play live together. SARAH DOUGHER: The Bluff. Not her best, but really she can't do wrong so I need to give her props.. OK Im stopping because i think i did way more than 10. but other great albums I enjoyed: cowboy junkies "open", God bless the blake babies (and the go-go's i guess), leona naess (not as good as her first, but nice pretty pop music in the vain of heather nova and the sundays), The Gossip "That's Not What I Heard" (fun bluesy-punky-dance tunes). And im diggin on hope sandoval too, but i just got it the other day. It reminds me more of cat power than mazzy (??) a big ole BOOOOO goes out to Bjork and Garbage. I was really bored by Vespertine and confused by Beautiful Garbage. I'm a fan of both and was really looking forward to both of them, so I'm kinda let down. but whatever, so many other good records. oooh ooooh ooooh and the Blondie remasters????? just got em, i'm in fucking heaven!
