It was incredibly hard to even come up with 10 albums I really enjoyed to make my list. Any other year, a few of these wouldn't have made the cut. My top 10 for the year, such as it is: 01. Kristin Hersh: Sunny Border Blue 02. Old 97's: Satellite Rides 03. The Strokes: Is This It? 04. Jimmy Eat World: Bleed American 05. Jon Brion: Meaningless 06. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: B.R.M.C. 07. Ryan Adams: Gold 08. Guided By Voices: Isolation Drills 09. Pete Yorn: musicforthemorningafter 10. Stephen Malkmus: Stephen Malkmus Honorable mentions would go to the Weezer, Sigur Ros, Go-Go's, Blake Babies and R.E.M. records, all of which I liked a lot, but didn't have a lot of staying power. The Eels and Le Tigre records were relatively disappointing to me. Don't get me wrong, as I do like both, but compared to the first Le Tigre record, _Feminist Sweepstakes_ isn't quite as fresh or exciting. As for the Eels album (which, I believe, hasn't been released in the US yet, although it's available just about everywhere else), I think someone on another list I'm on said it best -- someday in the future, it'll likely come out that E pulled an Alex Chilton and deliberately sabotaged any commercial potential the album might have held just to get back at his record label or something. That might be going a little far, as the album does have its moments, but it's hard to warm up to initially. Next year, I'm looking forward to new records from the following: Liz Phair Aimee Mann Jen Trynin (she did say she's working on something new) Courtney Love (either solo, with Bastard or Hole) Sleater-Kinney (are they working on anything yet?) Elliott Smith The Breeders Wilco My best late discovery this year was the Australian band Magic Dirt. If anyone stumbles across their single "Dirty Jeans" (only available as an import in North America, which is also the case with their albums), it's worth picking up. There's a decent cover of Liz's "Supernova" on there (no one will ever top Liz's version, but this isn't bad, all things considered), but the real attraction is the title song, which is about the most addictive song I've heard in quite some time. In case you're leery about checking out a band whose work is hard-to-find and -- for a lot of us - -- only available as imports, download "Dirty Jeans." It should convince you. Oh, and you can go to their Web site [http://www.magicdirt.net] to see the video as well. Just select Releases, then go to Video Clips, and follow to link to view available videos. A warning, though: the video does contain some homoerotic overtones, which some on this list may find unacceptable and might get freaked out about, judging from recent list discussions (ooh, was that a jab?). The other thing this year has been good for musically was remastered and repackaged versions of albums by many of my favorite artists and bands, including the Ramones, Blondie, X, Elvis Costello, and XTC. Many of these releases boasted much better sound and included worthy bonus tracks, including alternate mixes, demos, and b-sides. Given how there weren't many new albums worth getting excited about this year, I didn't mind shelling out money to rediscover and re-experience old favorites. Air puts on a hell of a live show too. i hope they >tour again soon. Me too!! Before this, AIR was always a band I "kinda" liked...I thought the _Moon Safari_ album was pretty cool and the _Virgin Suicides_ album was pretty decent, but I never really got into them all that much... then I heard _10,000 hrz Legend_ and I just went through the roof over them! They remind me of a modern day Pink Floyd - especially this album, somehow, in 2001 they managed to capture sounds that I never really heard before or thought of...it just blew me away completely. I don't care TOO TOO much for the Beck stuff on there, only because they sound SOOO "BECKISIH", which isn't a bad thing - I love Beck - but on an AIR album, I don't want to hear a Beck song, you know? But, the rest of the album is SOOO frickin good, it overshadows that part. Most anticipated for 2002: Tanya Donelly - Beautysleep Breeders - Title TK Liz Phair - (whatever she wants to call it) Bangles - You know what else I found this year - once again, I was listening to a lot of older stuff - particularily the Geraldine Fibbers, and BELLY. I think, aside from the AIR album, I probably listened to "King" and "Star" the second and third most this year. Just a case of a band that I forgot about I guess - and they got better with age :) I never really noticed the depth of the lyrics before - and of course - Tanya's "Love Songs for Underdogs" was in pretty heavy rotation too. I love music that creeps up... Dan. Everyone should suggest some titles for what they think the album should be called.
