"And I actually took the time to look at this?" is the question I am not asking myself. Some of it made sense, but most of it is just a bunch of journalistic fear factor jargon. It sounds to me like the guy who's writing that wants everyone to join him in HIS New World Order. Puh-lease!! I really cannot stand things like that. But I guess the majority of people are interested in fear and death and destruction and conspiracy theories related to such things. In which case, that guy's got a great marketing ploy going! Anyway, onto more pleasant things I suppose. I just signed up for this list. :) A good friend and fellow Liz lover showed it to me, so here I am. :) I do agree that there aren't enough gay rock stars out there. And it was funny to read that because I'm actually listening to Mr. Wainwright right now. He's amazing. I think it would be great to hear a Rufus-Liz collaboration of some kind. Also, what about John Cameron Mitchell, star and writer/director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Talk about an amzing movie with an amazing soundtrack!! He's got a great head on his shoulders (and so does Stephen Trask), and I can't wait to see what he comes out next. Regarding the GAP commercial: I caught the end of it yesterday. I missed Liz!! I even hopped up off the couch and raced to the VCR ready to tape it, but she never came on. :( Oh well. Knowing GAP, it should start running almost all the time as we get closer to Christmas. Yahoo! One was the group one with India Arie and Lisa Lopes and Sheryl Crow - and THE OTHER was the same song - but JUST LIZ all alone in the same room - but doing the whole thing by herself!! It was weird, but it got me thinking about a few things: First off all - does Liz ever strike anyone as...(and I mean this in the NICEST, most non-slandering way) as kind of geeky?? Like - i am TRULY not Liz bashing, she has been my favorite singer since 93 but a few things she's done..i don't know..sometimes she strikes me as like, someone who is kind of trying to fit in, but never CAN fit in. I mean, I think she sticks out like a sore thumb in the Gap commericial - not that she is "better" than that (and not that she doesn't look amazing - she looks fantastic)- but...it is like she physically does not belong. She looks awkward, like she is trying to do something she is not completely sure she wants to do, but wants to give it a shot anyway - .it is like she is TRYING to do something that is like the OTHERS but no matter how hard she tries, she just doesn't fit in. This is a good thing, in the sense that she really is her own flavour, but..shit...let me try to explain myself... It's like the little geeky girl at school who can't fit in. She'll try to wear her hair like the "popular" girls, she'll try to wear makeup like them, roll her jeans like them (anyone born from 1975-1978 will remember the painful era of rolling and pinning one's jeans) she'll try to act like them, but it only makes her stand out more - meanwhile, if she would only wear her hair down or wear the tattered pair of jeans that she feels most comfortable in, she'd look FANTASTIC and shine brighter than any of them. Right now - the LIz in the Gap commercial strikes me as the girl who is pinning her jeans up, but really doesn't know why she is pinning her jeans up. And this is not a knock against the gap...just..i always get this vibe with her...like, at Lillith Fair, when she opened for Alanis, her being in that CHERISH movie...like, they just remind me of very un-liz things..not that they are bad, but it gives me the impression she is trying on new looks or something...but none of them are catching on yet and none of them seem to be working with or for her, it's like she's searching, which could be the case since she just got a divorce, or is recovering from it... Oh well..this is just a ramble... and I'm not even really explaining myself very well - but does ANYONE at all know what I am kind of getting at? She just seems uncomfortable sometimes - another example would be the whole "shopping" interview, where she talks about spending money..blah blah blah...and there is an interview (an old one) a few years back where she talks about buying all the up to date hair-care and beauty products... I don't know...I got the vibe then too, it just kinda made me think... "This isn't LIz..what's she doing? Why is she saying that?" Sometimes it seems like she is VERY aware of what she is saying, almost shaping it to sound like something - some kind of image - but meanwhile, all she has to do is be nice, short concise and blunt, and we'd all love her... (like the liz we hear in her songs). Sorry if this is dumb...and i wasted anyone's time...but...um...ya. that's it. Anyone know what i mean? Love ya! Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 14:27:26 -0500 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: the gay rockstar Okay... all this talk of gay rock stars (or lack of) has propelled me to ask a few questions that I NEED an answer to: First off - is the lead singer of the Violent Femmes gay?? Lots of his lyrics lead me to believe this..especially songs like "BLACK GIRLS"...can anyone confirm his sexuality??? Not that it fucking matters - but shit - I just wanna know dammit! And ka-boom - he'd be a good gay rock star. Also - MICHAEL STIPE!! He's a pretty gay rock star - about as mainstream as you can get - yet no one EVER talks about the fact that he is gay. Also - isn't a member of JAMES gay?? I don't know if it is the lead singer, but I am pretty sure a member of JAMES actually DATED Michael Stipe at one time...can anyone confirm this? Didn't Kurt Cobain hop the fence now and then? I'm sure he did. Also - Placebo!!!! He's gay! and there is a bisexual in that band too!! They are pretty damn cool and rock-starish, especially in Velvet Goldmine... god - that movie is PURE PORN to me, I swear!! Hottest boys EVER!! OH...to be a glam rock boy of the 70's.....*sigh* Who else...shit - tell me the band POISON weren't a bunch of drag queens. Whatever. THey made Boy George pale! Pink lipstick, blue eyeshadow, ruffled sleeves..come on boys - I've seen Madonna wear butchier costumes. But I know what you mean, I think the closest thing we are going to get to a REAL gay male rock and roll star who can play a mean Les Paul is Melissa Etheridge. at any rate, sorry to weight the list down with my nonsensical blabber. He said 'if I hadn't met Courtney I just would have carried on with a bisexual lifestyle.' I wish I still had that interview but that's what I remember from it. Andrea Jill Sobule is bi, plays great guitar, writes cool songs, and is much more than her hit I Kissed A Girl. I'd love a collaboration between her and Liz. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 18:19:10 -0500 From: "kimberly ann" Subject: some one please help i have been trying to view that gap commercial with liz for forever and no matter what i try it doesnt work. it keeps telling me that the page provides potential unsafe information and something about activex security settings. i dont know what this means and this is making me really upset so if someone could please help me fix this or email me the file because i have no problems with other quicktime stuff or mail me a tape via snail mail anything im dying dying to see it. thanks please help kim _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 18:44:59 EST From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: yet still more gay rock stars (off topic) In a message dated 11/28/01 2:10:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, umiko1@yahoo.com writes: > Also, what about John Cameron Mitchell, star and writer/director of Hedwig > and the Angry Inch? Excellent point- both Hedwig cds are probably the best rock albums I've heard lately... can't wait for the dvd this month!! Also- I think I mentioned before- Brad Wood produced the 1st album. :) kickass. I went through the search for a gay rock star a few years ago & to this day the only decent music I've found was a band called Extra Fancy- they had an album called Sinnerman back in 1995, which was pretty good stuff for 1995. They were based in LA- Sinnerman was put out by Diablo Musica & eventually Atlantic reissued it with some new songs (+a video in which the lead singer Brian Grillo seduces Alexis Arquette), but the band was dropped & I don't believe they're together anymore... I think they sorta had a Concrete Blonde flavor to them (which rocked because i love CB), but it may be the L.A. connection. There must be somethin' in the smog. :) peace, rick "I know we're all psychotic, single and completely dysfunctional and it's all done over the phone, but it's a bit like a family, isn't it?" - -Tom, Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding let's face it kids...my webpage! ------------------------------ Date: 28 Nov 2001 19:11:26 -0500 From: Chris Black Subject: Re: some one please help You can change your security settings in Internet Explorer to a lower setting to view the video.
