I came across this chat transcript of Pete Yorn where he talks about Liz: Q: Your set in Orlando was incredible, and thanks for staying to meet your fans! How did you meet the great Liz Phair, and how was your experience working together? Thanks for sharing your music! Stephanie A: I met Liz Phair through Brad Wood or her manager or Ken Andrews. I think It was Ken Andrews. Working with her was great her new songs were amazing, she's a really cool girl and I can't wait to hear her new record. I saw JJ last week at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Fest. Only Liz would get me to pay $15 to see a Courtney Love movie! I have to say the songs are very un-Liz. But that's not necessarily bad. Uncle Alvarez was used quite well during the opening credits, and it fit the film's themes a bit. Faded starts off quite slow, and then kicks into a rock beat. It's not very catchy melodically, but is more of a lyrical showcase. Appletree was NOT too great. "Under an appletree, is where my true love came to me." Seriously. I'll let that lyric speak for itself. Finally, after a Sinead O'conner song during the end credits, She's Gone Crazy pops up. Liz's voice lessons kick in here. It's a really slow, dark, spare ballad. The best of the new three, in my opinion. I noticed in the credits that Angelo Badalamenti produced the new songs. If any of you are familiar with his work - Twin Peaks, Marianne Faithfull's A Secret Life - he uses these dark, creepy guitar sounds in his music. This is in Liz's new songs as well. I honestly don't think it fits her that well, and, hopefully, we won't see his work on her new album. But, I've gotta say, anything that Liz does turns me on, no matter what. That's my Julie Johnson report. Luvit. - -Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 10:23:04 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: "Down, Down, Down..." Since Down isn't part of the Julie Johnson soundtrack - I kinda got a second wind of enthusiasm over the possibility that we might see a new Liz album sooner than we think. I mean, since that song is supposed to be on her new album - and they are already at the stage where they are playing with her songs and making videos - perhaps it really WILL be out early 2002. I'm probably fooling myself, but someone, please - humor me. Also - I am DYING to hear the Julie Johnson soundtrack more than anything...sux that the company went under and stuff...good god. Figures though. It wouldn't be a Liz-related project if it wasn't fucked up and delayed for some obscure reason. Anyway - for now - a good album to pick up is "BAVARIAN FRUIT BREAD" by former Mazzy Star gal HOPE SANDOVAL. It's fantastic. I'm in a bad mood because I had a dream I met Bjork - but it was in a GOD AWFUL neighborhood - like - a PIT in downtown Detroit - and my boyfriend got killed and then they stole the obituary that I had Bjork sign, for lack of a CD cover. Isn't that weird? Anyway, see ya laters, Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 21:11:45 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: new records? (non-Liz) Just wondering what everyone thinks are some of the better records that have come out over the last few months or so. i've discovered the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's eponymous album. damn, it's good! it sounds to me like they listened to everything that came out in the last 10 years or so, chose everything that sounded good, and wrote a song in a somewhat similar vein. "White Palms" sounds like a relative to Jane Addiction's "Mountain Song." "Too Real" sounds like it belongs on the Verve's "Urban Hymns" records somewhere. there's quite a bit of Jesus and Mary Chain influence (to my ears). a good record from top to bottom. the new Spiritualized album is pretty good, but not quite as good as "Ladies And Gentlemen We're Floating In Space." i also like Bis' "Social Dancing" record ~ has anyone picked up their new one? how's the Ryan Adams record? Bjork's? i have all her other solo albums and love them, but haven't picked up the new one. is there any verdict on REM's "Reveal?" i haven't really liked any of their records since "Automatic For The People." one or two songs on each subsequent record, but not much more than that. just curious. chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 21:13:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Tilden Subject: Re: new records? The best album I've heard this year has to be Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - Global a Go-Go. A great mix of a lot of different styles but still keeping all the songs on the album cohesive. Its about as all over the map as an album can be and still retain its rock roots. Make a great connection at Yahoo! I have to say I was disappointed with Vespertine, especially as it follows Selmasongs, which I thought was brilliant. I do, however, completely recommend the new Remy Zero cd called "Golden Hum". It rocks. a lot. "Perfect Memory" and "Save Me" are standout songs, but the whole thing is just awesome! Also, Jude's "King of Yesterday" is my favorite disc of the moment... I totally think everyone should go buy it. I think it's something that Liz fans in particular would really, really like. :) god i almost typed Liz phans. that means bedtime. peace, rick zipping it & heading back to lurkopolis "I know we're all psychotic, single and completely dysfunctional and it's all done over the phone, but it's a bit like a family, isn't it?" - -Tom, Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding let's face it kids...my webpage! ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #272 ************************************
