Great Question, I remember buying Exile in Guyville (along with Lucinda Williams Car Wheels, and Erykah Badu's Live album) one afternoon while still at college -- I got back to my dorm room and popped all three in the player and pressed random. Anyway, I remember sitting in my room for the next week and just listening to these three albums over and over again . . . surprisingly nothing really caught my attention, until the strangest song I ever heard began playing in my mind "I want to fuck you like a dog, take you home and make you like it." What the hell is this? I remember looking on the back of the cd case, unable to figure out what the name of the song was (for the longest time I thought Flower was Strange Loop). Eventually, I took the other cd's out (nothing against them -- love them both in fact, just not quite as special) and took guyville song by song savouring each movement . . . took me about a month to get to the end. When that was finished I tackled Whip - Smart and the rest is history . . . james ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 10:35:49 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: re: 1st Liz song Drew wrote: >What song got everyone to start listening to Liz? The first time I ever saw her - was live in 1993 (shit, it might have been early 94, but it was FOR SURE before Whip-Smart was out...but i am thinking 93) and it was at St.Andrews Hall in Detroit Michigan..I believe. Shit..I was like 16 years old...my god. AT the time I thought she was a local Michigan girl - so I didn't even pay too much attention...neither did the audience. The song that REALLY got me - was FLOWER...because it seemed like such a fucked up song for some very plain, average, shy looking girl to be singing..and I do not mean that to sound sexist... it was just like "HUH!!??? This innocent little girl is saying 'fuck'!?!" But ya - FLOWER caught my attention - for obvious reasons..and I stumbled across "EXILE" in the stores like - 2 weeks later - and bought it instantly and the rest is history. for the record - FLOWER is not even one of my favorites..when I heard the rest of Exile I was flat out HOOKED to Divorce Song - and Shatter is still probably my favorite Liz song to date. so ya..that's my story. Hope it brought all of you joy, laughter, tears and shites. see you soon, Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 17:02:27 From: "jeF kearns" Subject: n.y telethon performer question Hi. My answer is kinda funny. I'm on other mailing lists, and one day there was all this talk about Liz Phair and how great she was. So I went out and bought whitechocolatespaceegg and was hooked!!! I'm not sure which song it was that did it for me, but probably "Polyester Bride." After that, of course, I had to pick up Exile in Guyville and Whipsmart! erin - ----Original Message Follows---- From: Polygrrrl@aol.com To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: First taste of Liz Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 02:57:51 EDT What a great question! It's from "Westword", April 5, 1995, and it's an interesting read. Here's an excerpt: "I wrote a lot of songs, but they didn't sound natural. They sounded contrived, overly thought out. Honestly, they weren't stupid enough. My favorite songs are the ones that are both really intelligent and really dumb right at the same time -- they have something about them that reminds you of every song you can think of, but they're also totally different and fresh. Those are the ones that I like, but I can only write them when they come out easily. And when I was making Whip-Smart, nothing came out easily." Hello all, I just recently joined this list again after about 2 years off the Internet. I don't know what happened but I quit going online completely. I'm happy to be back:) Just wanted first off to send my love, prayers, thoughts, and hopes to everyone in the world. I don't know what's gonna happen now, but I have hope and faith that something positive will come out of this. I am so happy to see the unity that has ocurred everywhere since September 11th. I pray that it does not fade:) So where in the crap is everyone hearing these new Garbage songs? Because I would really like to hear them as well. I heard today that their new album is coming out in early November. I hope so... The first song that got me hooked on Liz was "Supernova". I was a wee 11 years old when I heard it. As far as I can rememeber, I was watching MTV during the day, the video came on and I flipped over it. I have no idea what, at 11 years old, I got from Liz Phair. She just rocked out so hard. As I further discovered her music, the lyrics COMPLETELY hooked me. I can't explain how her lyrics validate everything I think, but they do. I've been fascinated ever since.. I just think that Liz is the greatest!
