That Canadian commentary is not recent. It in the early 70s in response to the vietnam era. Sally is right on the decision to use the nuclear bomb. I haven't read it since high school (at least 17 years ago), but Gar Alperovitz's book Atomic Diplomacy makes a pretty convincing case the US didn't need to use nuclear weapons. There is an interview with him at since the url is a pain, here is an excerpt: Alperovitz: The use of the atomic bomb, most experts now believe, was totally unnecessary. Even people who support the decision for various reasons acknowledge that almost certainly the Japanese would have surrendered before the initial invasion planned for November. The U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey stated that officially in 1946. We found a top-secret War Department study that said when the Russians came in, which was August 8, the war would have ended anyway. The invasion of Honshu, the main island, was not scheduled to take place until the spring of 1946. Almost all the U.S. military leaders are on record saying there were options for ending the war without an invasion. There is also this piece adapted from his work http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/122/hiro/necessary.html Getting back to music, there was a great concert in San Francisco Sunday afternoon organized by Michael Franti. There were a few thousand people there. By the time Franti's band, Spearhead was playing everyone was dancing and singing along. It was in support of this campaign http://www.globalexchange.org/september11/hateFreeZone.html The site has a hate free zone poster you can print out and post. Already, lots of places in my neighborhood (the mission) have put it up. There are a couple of photos from the concert at http://sf.indymedia.org/display.php?id=104324 and there will probably be video and audio posted to the site later. some other alternative sources of info http://www.commondreams.org http://www.alternet.org http://www.mediachannel.org there's lots more, but i've been posting stuff to http://tvbarn.com Salon also has some good coverage including this piece http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2001/09/13/justice/index.html and my friend Dan (tom tomorrow) used some digital photos he took from his apt. in brooklyn in these two pieces http://www.salon.com/comics/tomo/2001/09/12/tomo/index.html http://www.salon.com/comics/tomo/2001/09/17/tomo/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 07:10:40 EDT From: Standingsixfeet1@aol.com Subject: I Don't Mean to Sound Uncaring . . . But I was wondering if we could try our hardest to stick to some Liz talk. Of course the most important thing in all of our lives is the horrible situation this country (and others) are in right now, but it would be nice to have at least one safe haven where we can talk about other things of lesser importance . . . like Liz : ) I'm sorry if I've offended or slighted anyone . . . that is certainly not my intention. james ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 07:40:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Mariam Hamou Subject: Thank You To all the people on this list I have a few words to say to you. The first thing I'd like to say is Thank you. You are a group of people who are so open minded and so very willing to seek out the truth in the most desperate of situations. The reason why I say Thank You is because I am a Muslim and visibly so. I have been the target of a few ignorant people's attacks but for the most part I have recieved nothing but people's support. Now I am in Canada where people are a little more open minded but the Americans on this list have just amazed me in the most positive way. As a Muslim, I would like to say that we do not condone these acts, rather, we condemn them. Our religion does NOT preach that we should go kill innocent people. Furthermore, committing suicide is the ultimate insult to God and is punished by eternal damnation. These men were part of some sort of organization that wanted to spread terror and they unfortunately have succeded. Unfortunately, this might force America to defend itself through the same action that was manifest on it. And rightfully so, the US should take action but the fear is that this might be the beginning of a World War which will only result in more deaths, hate and sadness - more innocent people will die. I hope the US administration will consider the lives of the innocent when they decide to carry out their defence mission. God help us all. In there with your serial killer has to be some innocent people, including children, who despise this serial killer but cannot get out of the house... Now what should be the police response? >What should the police's response be to the homeowner when he says that >the killer is innocent and he won't give him up? >And these people he's trained start killing your friends, your family? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 12:46:52 -0400 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: liz phair cds available Hi guys, I decided to venture out of lurkdom to volunteer to make some cds for anyone who wants them.
