At The Fillmore" on local San Francisco television, and one of the artists performing was Pete Yorn. I was hoping that there would be some mention of Liz Phair, but alas she was not mentioned (at least from what I saw). Oh well. I figured this post was needed to take our minds off (however briefly) from the recent events... - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com MeSmErIzInG - AnOtHeR LiZ PhAiR WeBsItE http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 13:13:48 +0200 From: "Tim Wallyn" Subject: recent events Hi, I hardly ever posted in the last year(s). But the recent events and its wake make a difference. I'm in Belgium, and I heard the whole series of events at work on the radio, with ever growing shock. Each time a newsflash rolled in, everybody here was really locked to the radio. I think it looked like a scene from the World War, where people in safe places listened to adio London to find out what was going on elsewhere. Terrifying... I wish all listers in America strength to overcome the loss. I sincerely hope that everyone of you and yours are ok. But I also realize that even if everyone of this list, whom we sort of know, is unhurt, that somehow there are thousands of families who are not. However, I also wish everyone the strength of serenity. Because after the events we are faced with a difficult task: reacting. It frightens me that in the recent past so many leading offices in the world are occupied by people with extreme views. Both in the Middle-East, Europe, Russia, and the U.S. I hope that, if this terrorist attack was an attack on democracy, that it doesn't reach its goal. Terrorim is the result of mindless hatred. Let's not give in to hatred, but instead look for solutions for the situation we are now in, for the problems we face. The Queen has centered the changing of the guards around the americans who were lost, and a 3 minute moment of silence was just recognized. In some ways, I think the British are much more compassionte where international affairs are concerned. james ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 09:54:42 -0400 From: "Andrea Steiner" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V4 #233 It really means a lot to everyone living in New York right now that people in other parts of the country and the world are so sympathetic to our anger, sadness and pain because of this horrifying tragedy. This is a terrifying time to live in and I feel like the world has completely changed. It has changed the way I look at life and the world. As Dan said, everything else seems so completely irrelevant. It really puts things into perspective. It makes any form of entertainment right now seem totally frivolous. And as more attempted hijackings are being thwarted, it appears that things won't be back to normal any time soon. Thank you so much to everyone who has expressed their concern and heartfelt emotions. I appreciate all the messages of support during these times, especially from people in other countries. But I do worry about striking back while we are blinded with rage. I understand the temptation. I feel the same shock, disbelief, anger, and desire for revenge that millions of others have been experiencing. A dark part of me is looking forward to watching CNN coverage of the seemingly inevitable military response. But acting out of rage is less likely to prevent further harm than a rational consideration of possible responses. If we could be certain that the organizers and perpetrators of this horror could be killed (a) without killing innocent bystanders and (b) without provoking future terrorist retribution, ... well, the point is moot because these conditions cannot be met. A brighter part of me knows that we have better alternatives.
