I really like it! The music actually surprised me - It caught on first listen- I really like it. It sounds (i know this sounds cliche) like she's blossomed even more as a musician, and I love when there is that piano feel in her songs.. But i really like it. I am hoping to GOD this isn't just some Julie Johnson promo - I am hoping it is the first single off her NEW album (soon to be released of course). I am guessing/hoping a release date for an album will come soon - if not - I am hoping to GOD at least Julie Johnson will come out. Then again - does this not ring familiar to anyone? I remember watching Much Music back in good ole '96 and Sook Yin Lee saying "Alrighty, coming up - we got the BRAND NEW LIZ PHAIR video - she is working on her next album as we speak - it should be out soon - here is Rocket Girl..." and it was great! We had a new liz song! a new liz video!! and obviously, since the video was out - there HAD to be something coming soon.... so we waited.. and we waited...and waited..and waited...until 2 years went by. But I'm gonna give this the benefit of the doubt - and hopefully, we'll get something nice and pretty from Liz any day now... um...any day now... um... really..any day now. Normally I only post MP3s of songs that are not commercially available (and won't be), but I've decided that for a limited time I'll post these: http://www.visi.com/~lazlo/liz/sounds/mpeg/down.aif http://www.visi.com/~lazlo/liz/sounds/mpeg/down.mp3 The AIFF is only 1.2 MB and the MP3 is 2.7 MB. You'll probably need QuickTime for the AIFF, but any MP3 player should be able to handle the MP3. These were extracted from the QuickTime file which is 12.1 MB itself. These files will only be available for a limited time (possibly only one day). If Liz or her management ask to have them take down they'll be gone immediately. Enjoy. - -- - -Aaron Walker http://www.visi.com/~lazlo/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2001 03:06:58 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: "Down" mp3/Phairities Hey everyone, I just finished making an mp3 of "Down." For those on the real-time version of the list, I should have the mp3 uploaded in, say, 10 minutes. Look for it at [http://members.home.net/jlong133]. For those on the digest version of the list, it'll be up long before you read this. :) I encoded the file at 224 kbps, to try to preserve the quality as best as possible. However, as a result, the file is *huge* -- 4.61 MB. I won't be able to keep the mp3 up for very long, due to only being allowed a certain amount of transfer per month, and I know almost all of you will want to download it. Anyone who'd like to host it, please, be my guest. I'll give Ken Lee first dibs, because of all of the great things he does for all of us. If he declines, anyone else who steps forward is more than welcome to the file. I wish we could find out where this song is from. For some reason, I doubt it'd be something from the new album, since the record isn't finished yet, and I think they wouldn't choose a single before deciding upon a final track list for the album. Maybe this is the fourth of Liz's contributions to the Julie Johnson soundtrack. I kinda wonder, though, since the soundtrack was supposed to be released by Koch, not Capitol. Maybe part of the deal for Liz to appear on the soundtrack is that Capitol will still hold the copyright to the material. Regardless, I quite like this song, although it seems like an odd choice as a single. "Love/Hate Transmission," "Firewalker," and "Don't Apologize" all seem a lot more accessible than "Down" does. Obviously this song must mean a lot to Liz to go out on a limb and choose it as a single. I honestly don't see it winning over a lot of new fans. The video is great as well, although it does leave me wondering: Does Liz ever age? Also, I know the whole Phairities thing seems to be at a stand-still and I owe a lot of people e-mails right now. June ended up being an absolutely insane month, and after a short (and, if I do say so myself, well-deserved) vacation, I'm just getting back into the swing of things. I'm hoping to get everything together by the weekend. Thanks everyone for being so patient; I hope once everyone has their discs, they'll feel that their patience has been rewarded. I'll leave the file up for now, but if there's any bad feelings about it, I'll gladly take it down. Hey, maybe Liz's management will be pissed about us posting these and we'll at least finally find out where the heck this song is from. ;) But seriously, if Liz's management requests the file be taken down, consider it done. From this video I think she has made tremendous improvement with her voice. Some of the songs on WCSE sound strange, as if she was trying too hard, but in Down I think she stays within a reasonable range and doesn't make her voice sound so forced. I like the lyrics as well, but overall I wish it had more guitar sound. Enjoyed choppy and slo-mo dream type effects. Wondering about Chinese motif and the red meat in the streets. Barely visible at end - China Town wishing well - I can't make out what it is exactly, but theres Vacation, Wealth Love, and then Money. Thanks for hunting this down steve:) Oh look, pun. I think the video's great, I keep finding more and more little nuances about it that make it very interesting to watch. Not that it's not interesting enough already (I mean, it's new LIZ!!!) and damn does she look hot! As for all of the 'discussing' in the past comparing the merits of EIG vs Whip-Smart vs WCSE, this seems to me more like Exile lyrically, she's pissed at that one person, and she can show him that, kinda rub it in his face like she did with EIG. (who was the guy she really wanted show, any thoughts anyone?) But it's got more of WCSE sound, mature musically. And when I say that, I mean it's more than guitar, drums, and a sprinkling of bass ala Exile. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, although, I love that sparse musical arrangement, focusing on Liz's guitar. And it's piano...Hehehe, love that. About all of that big record label talk, Ithink it's safe to conclude that Liz wants to play the game, right? Gotta feed that shopping addiction. But when you play the game you have to play to win. This song doesn't really seem single-worthy. Liz has even said herself that they give you one single, one chance and that's pretty much it for an album. (I read that in one of the articles on Ken Lee's site yesterday, he's awesome) It's a damn good song, it's just not what the kind of thing that's going to get played on the radio. But who knows, maybe Liz really wanted to say, "fuck you Jim." Ha, it's a good thing she's as eloquent as she is. Lastly, I'm going to take a stab at that lyric that was escaping whoever posted that one message... (Sorry, I'm really bad at copying and pasting!)
