Not as easy as 'Car Wheels...', but absolutely beautiful and fragile. One of this years must haves. Sarah Harmer finally played in the UK last month, and she was excellent. It also meant i got her cd at last. Not as edgy as Weeping Tile stuff, but still wonderful. it reminds me of Eddi Reader in parts and that's no bad thing. Oh yeah, the new Joe Henry is fantastic too. It includes 'Stop', which Madonna did as 'don't tell me' on her last album. Compare and contrast. Where's summer b? "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... Joseph Lee Henry. "i know the promise is so much better than the real thing" ... I was just curious how her new album was? Also, I recently bought The Velvet Underground album with Beginning to See the Light on it -- thinking it was the song that Liz covered. But it isn't even close. Is the song that she performs on the Pottymouth Mouth recordings indeed not a cover? Either way, I'm glad I bought the album, one of their most underrated, I think. james ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 05:58:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Andy Peters Subject: Liz in a movie!! I knew it! Careful readers of this forum will remember that I predicted not too long ago that Liz's move to California would probably result in her beginning an acting career. This news from the June 6, 2001 issue of SF Weekly confirms it! She's going to be in an indy movie called "Cherish", which also stars Robin Tunney from The Craft. I can't wait to see this. The only bad news is that it says Liz won't be contributing any songs to this movie. Still, I knew Liz wanted to be in movies, with her foray into modeling and directing her own videos. Here's the article in its entirety: SF Weekly, June 6, 2001 With the subversive 1997 buddy movie Dream With the Fishes, Finn Taylor promoted himself from one-credit screenwriter (Pontiac Moon) to indie writer/ director. The next rung may be auteur, as the Albany resident has just begun production on Cherish, an edgy thriller-slash-love story. Robin Tunney plays a promiscuous, immature computer animator who runs over a cop while evading a stalker, then spends most of the movie under house arrest, where she falls for detective Tim Blake Nelson. Nora Dunn, Lindsay Crouse, and Liz Phair play supporting roles in the independent feature, which shoots around the Bay Area through June. While the moody Dream soundtrack echoed the characters' druggy disorientation, Cherish is filled with the love songs Tunney requests from a sappy radio station. "Finn has some hyperromanticized scenes that will require a lot of '70s pop music," producer Johnny Wow reports, dashing hopes that a new Phair tune would be part of the mix. "We have a list of songs that are written into the script, and we're in the process of getting the rights." Wow and co-producer Mark Burton financed the film through a consortium led by their production company, avoiding studio interference and - -- if all goes according to plan -- leading to a bidding war when Cherish debuts at Sundance next year. Meanwhile, Taylor is slated to direct a Hollywood feature this fall (unless it's derailed by a SAG strike). Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Subject: off topic - maria mckee Since it's so quiet, i thought i'd ask this. A few years ago, a couple people on this list recommended maria mckee. Well, a cd store went out of biz last winter and put everything 75% off. i remember hearing a lot about her so i picked up a few of her cds for a few bucks apiece. I took awhile to actually listen to them and get into them. i thought they were odd and kinda sonically unpleasing at first. for some reason, the past couple of months i hear them differently and think her stuff is amazing. i am so addicted right now, especially to Life is Sweet. i can't get enough! so here is my question if the ms mckee fans are still around: should i get lone justice (that was the name of her former band, right?) stuff?? what does it sound like? dont be afraid to say if it's country, cuz i can dig. ;) what one should i get, if any? thanks thanks :) Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 10:01:32 EDT From: Sexililgurl@aol.com Subject: my own rants! live, i love live!!! live's my local fav. its great because them and fuel are from around me , and its like. . . *score* but you know who's the best??? mary prankster. :) ~~otay nuff now ~~~taryn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 11:27:09 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: Lucinda Williams/Beginning to See the Light James wrote: >Also, I recently bought The Velvet Underground album with Beginning to See >the Light on it -- thinking it was the song that Liz covered. Liz introduced it as such when she performed it live on a couple of different radio broadcasts while promoting _Whip-Smart_. She said that because she was not touring, she was writing a whole bunch of new songs. Some of the other songs from that period include "Wasted" and "Hurricane Cindy," which she also performed a couple of times on-air during the fall and winter of '94. When she finally did tour in April '95, all three of those songs were usually included in her set lists. I suppose this is good news, but, uh, isn't Liz supposed to be in the studio right about now finishing up the album, according to all those articles from about a month ago? I'm starting to think we're not going to see the album until next year -- four years after _whitechocolatespaceegg_. Still, if this is something Liz wants to do, good for her. It's just frustrating sometimes as a fan; you almost wonder how much of a priority Liz's music career is to her. I think the first Lone Justice album is awesome - it's one of my desert island discs and there are some VERY kickass tunes on it. I liken it most to Maria's solo effort You Gotta Sin to Be Saved. The second album, Shelter, also very good, I consider more like her self-titled debut solo album. And then last year (I think) there was a Lone Justice collection released with a couple extra things. Naturally, I recommend them all mightily!! There is an extreme parallel between Liz and Maria (and another favorite of mine, Holly McNarland). It seems like there's an unending wait for new stuff!!!!! Maybe they can all come out together and tour together so I can save some dough. paige- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 16:44:33 From: "DarkSide oftheMoon" Subject: what happened?
