(Other than the fact that she's in an upcoming issue of Playboy [ick!] but other than that...) I rather like the latest release from the Go-Go's. Been raving about it most of the day, in fact. Just about to finish listening to the album now, in fact. First off - Steve - yer gonna LOVE the Weezer album...whoever wrote the bad review was just someone who wanted to be different - because it kicks ass. My only critique would be - it is a bit short...but hell - short and sweet. I love it. Either way - each song is a fast dose of PURE and total Weezer. It kicks ass, pretty much as hard as their first album, and keeps all the prettiness of Pinkerton. At any rate - Toronto people - I guess the Go-Go's are holding a free show on some beach in Toronto - I know I wasn't aware they had beaches, but whatever. ANy Go-Go's fans might wanna check it out....it's on Victoria Day - - some beach..shit..I don't know, I'm just a windsor kid, but apparently this "park" has shows all the time. I can't believe REM just did a free show...lucky toronto bastards!! And Belinda is in PLAYBOY!! She gave a good answer though -she said she did it to show that you don't have to be a "size zero and twenty years old" to be sexually viable as a woman. she did it in the tradition of "50's pin-up girl" and there is humour in it - so way to go Belinda!! There's a song on the new album called "THROW ME A CURVE" - that is completely cheese-ball fun rock Go-Go-style - and it's all about how models look like sticks, and the attractive girls got the curves. Cool shit. Too bad guys still have to have a washboard stomach. just kiddin, Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 23:35:40 EDT From: DeathofJane@aol.com Subject: Jets to Brazil hey this is the first time ive ever responded to the digest. i was inspired by the guy asking about the guided by voices show in baltimore. i wanted to know if anyone was goin to the Jets to Brazil show in the new york on may 26th. i think itd be cool to meet some random liz phair fan there. anyway. later. christal ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 01:06:35 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: R.E.M. Dan wrote: >I can't believe REM just did a free show...lucky toronto bastards!! I was one of the lucky bastards who attended that show yesterday, along with a couple of friends of mine. I just have to say that it's very easily among the best four or five shows I've ever seen -- I can't even remember the last time I enjoyed myself at a concert so much. We planned it so we would be there over two hours before the show was scheduled to start; even then, there was quite a huge crowd, but we still ended up close to the stage. Word after the show was that over 10,000 people had attended. The show was outdoors, on the corner of Yonge and Dundas, and they had blocked off a few blocks of Yonge Street for it. My friend Maria took two rolls of pictures, which we're hoping will turn out well. Apparently MuchMoreMusic will be airing the concert in its entirety on June 3, so I'm looking forward to taping that. The set was very "singles" heavy, apart from the songs they did from _Reveal_. The older stuff, though, was pretty much the hits -- "Losing My Religion," "Man on the Moon," "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?," "It's the End of the World as We Know it (And I Feel Fine)," etc. Maria and I agreed afterwards that the two main highlights for us were "So. Central Rain" and "She Just Wants to Be" from the new album (let me tell you, that's one hell of a song!). We were kind of surprised, though; half the audience looked like they were skipping school to attend. We couldn't believe how many kids were there. At one point, I remember saying to Maria, "Half these kids don't look like they were even born when _Murmur_ came out." Not that there's anything wrong with that; we had just been expecting a slightly older crowd. You should have seen the mad rush to the record stores after the show. There's an HMV, Tower, Sam the Record Man, and Sunrise all within a couple of blocks of where the show was held, and they were all mobbed. All of the stores were playing R.E.M. as well. I'd been hoping they would have played "The Wake-Up Bomb" at the show, but they didn't; the next best thing was walking into one store and hearing it -- LOUD! And the new album is great. I never really got into _Up_ that much, and _New Adventures in Hi-Fi_ took a while for me to warm up to (it's now one of my favorites), but I liked this one at first listen. I really hope it does well for them. I bought _Reveal_ on Tuesday when it came out; at the same time, I bought the new Weezer and Go-Go's discs as well. I've mostly been focused on the R.E.M. album, but I've listened to the others once each so far and my initial impressions are quite favorable. I'll probably give them each another listen or two over the weekend, along with the discs I picked up yesterday while I was in Toronto. I'm thinking of going to the Go-Go's free show on Monday, but I'm not sure if it'll happen. Everyone else I know who would normally be interested in going already have other plans. I don't mind going to shows alone if it's something in a smaller venue, but for anything grand scale, I usually prefer to be there with a couple of people I know. It'd probably be a lot of fun, though. Cheers, Jase ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 01:08:51 -0400 From: owner-support-system@smoe.org (by way of Jason Long ) Subject: Bounced message From: Jennifer K Luu Subject: New WEEZER This is in response to all the kids who wanna hear what the opinions are about the new Weezer. First of all, HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE WEEZER?!!? They are so rocky and nerdy and poppy and sweet, it is amazing. They are like some sort of modern-day Beach Boys. Rivers voice is so sweet and beautiful and the backing vox are just as good. And they just ROCK IT!! And as someone else previously mentioned, they are even amazing live. I mean, WOW. :) As for the new album, I think it's amazing, just as I think the first one and "Pinkerton" are. The whole deal w/ the new album and w/ Weezer in general, is that "Pinkerton" was hailed as a "failure." The Blue Album sold some 2 million copies w/ its "Sweater Song" and "Buddy Holly" hits and then "Pinkerton" came out and sold less than one fifth of what the first one did. Naturally, the songs on "Pinkerton" were incredibly personal and intimate to Rivers and the album was his own natural progression from The Blue Album. He was happy with how it turned out. So when Weezer released that CD and only their most devoted fanbase bought it, while no one else really cared for it, Rivers was crushed. And basically, he got really depressed and shut himself up inside his room and stuff. That's why there was such a long hiatus between "Pinkerton" and The Green Album. When Rivers finally got into the mood to write songs again and began to think about re-entering the music biz, he was incredibly weary. Fo' real. I'm talkin', Weezer played shows throughout CA UNDER AN ALIAS, for a while, just to test the waters. Fortunately, when they did that, people caught on that it was Weezer playing these shows and the support was endless. If any of you remember, Weezer did their first semi-big tour a couple years ago and everywhere sold out. When they toured again this past year, everything sold out again. So the beauty of it all is that when Rivers was so scared to get back into being a band and was doing it all very cautiously, he was met with UNDYING ENTHUSIASM by fans who had missed Weezer like hell. And now, hopefully, he is happy again. :) So anyway, I thought it'd be good for people to know this about the new album. I think it's important. It was Weezer's return from self-inflicted exile. AND IT'S DAMN GOOD. I, personally, like The Blue Album better than "Pinkerton" and I think The Green Album is more similar to The Blue Album. The songs are short, sweet and to-the-point. They're about girls and real-life stuff, just like Weezer's always been so good at writing about. I feel like they kind of give off this Charlie-Brown/shit-always-happens-to-me feeling and somehow it's just comes off incredibly charming. There are 10 songs on it and the CD is less than half an hour long. WEEZER IS AMAZING!!! They are the Kings of NerdRock!!! Everyone should purchase this CD!!! :) Love, Jennifer P.S. Was anyone else reminded of our very own LIZ when I was mentioning all that stuff about taking a break from being an artist b/c of disenchantment w/ the shit the comes w/ it? It's not exactly the same thing, but pretty similar. Sigh. Rock stars live such hard lives....:) ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #134 ************************************
