Hmm... > > Katie ();) i think that's another of liz's great steals.... i've noticed that billy bragg steals from the very same song, when he starts out 'new england' with 'i was 21 years when i wrote this song, i'm 22 now but i won't be for long...' i think that's how the S&G song starts too, right? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 03:42:27 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: 'Phairities' CD-R tree Hey everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that the Phairities compilation is finished and soon the distribution of the discs will be underway. Thanks to everyone who's written to me to volunteer to help burn CDs. I know I haven't had a chance to write back to many of you yet, so what I'll probably do is send a mass e-mail out to everyone this weekend, since many of you seem to be asking the same questions. I'll also let all of you know how to get your copies of the discs from me. If there's anyone else out there who hasn't spoken up yet who would be able to burn CDs for other list members, please let me know. The more volunteers the better; that way each person will have fewer sets of the CDs to burn. There are two CDs to this set -- one contains studio recordings, the other consists of live material. I posted a proposed track list a while ago that I've pretty much stuck to, but I'll repost the final selection and sequence as soon as I have a chance to type it all up. For the most part, the discs turned out great. Unfortunately, with some of the live recordings, the quality isn't always perfect, although I tried to clean everything up the best I could. Sometimes there's only so much you can do, though -- a poor quality recording is a poor quality recording. However, in the case of a song like "Stranger," that's all I had to work with, and I'd rather have something that's less than stellar than not include the song at all. The goal of these discs was to pretty much round up as many of the rare songs floating around as possible. But take heart, all of the songs from the original Phairities cassette I compiled almost five years ago sound much better here -- "You Have No Idea," "I'll Get You High," the live version of "If I Ever Pay You Back," the promo remix of "Whip-Smart," not to mention countless others. So, at the very least, these discs will serve as a sonic upgrade for all of those older songs. For those who would like to get copies of the discs, please send me an e-mail to . Do not reply to this address; it's hard enough sometimes to sort through all the mail that comes into this account, so I'd rather keep things separate just to make things easier. Include your name, the e-mail address it's best to contact you at, and your mailing address. Please reply before May 16, as that will be the cut-off date. At that point, I will send an e-mail to everyone to let you know who your branch for the tree will be. The branch will be the person who will burn copies of the discs for you. Usually the standard practice is to send your branch the blank CD-Rs, which in this case will be two, along with a self-addressed stamped padded mailer for them to mail the discs back to you, once they're finished. It's very important to make sure your mailer is already stamped and that you've paid a sufficient amount to cover the return postage. Your branch is doing you a favor; do you really want to stick them with the cost of mailing your discs back? Of course, another option might be to simply work out a trade with your branch, if you have anything to offer that they're interested in; it will be up to you and that person to work the details out. One last thing: These discs are not to be sold and no one is to make a profit from them. That's not why I put the effort into compiling them. The whole point here is to share the music for the cost of blanks-and-postage or to trade copies. Please do not let me see these show up on eBay like Ken's WCSE Sessions discs did. If that happens, I won't be very apt to do anything like this again in the future. Wouldn't it be a real bitch if, after going to all the effort of cleaning the Girly Sound tapes up, I ended up being the only one with the finished discs? That would really suck, so please don't let it happen. I'm sure I'm forgetting some details here, so if anyone has any questions please let me know. Hmm...< i've never heard that s&g song, but that's a fairly common phrase of biblical origins. I work at a shelter for at-risk youth, and i was hanging out with one of the clients, and she was talking about how she was going crazy because she had a song stuck in her head. i told her that the day before i had the neverending story theme song stuck in my head (which is bizarre, because it's been years since i've seen that movie). So i asked her what it was and she was like "Oh, you wouldn't know, it's just some random song no one knows off the higher learning sdtrk". i told her i had the sdtrk (she gave me this look like she didn't believe me) and asked what song and she was said "that 'don't have time' one". so of course, i bursted out "THAT'S LIZ PHAIR!" Oops, couldn't contain myself. i started singing it and she was like 'YES that's it, get it out of my head!" It was cool because it was kind of a bonding experience for the client and i. anyways, that's one place i never thought Liz would come up! :) steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 00:35:50 EDT From: Random828@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V4 #124 Speaking of "haunted" (as Katie was), Poe is going to be the opening act on the Depressed Mode tour this summer. First we had PJ Harvey opening for U2, now this equally quirky pairing. Maybe Liz will tour with Billy Joel...
