My life runs parallel to Liz's, it seems. I knew what she was talking about all over Exile, and then again on Whip Smart. I got married and had a baby about the time she was doing the same, and the stresses of parenthood/career/identity tore my relationship apart. She *nailed* it when she wrote Go On Ahead, and I knew it was there for her when I heard that song. I think she's going to have more good, hard-hitting stuff out of this, if my own experiences are anything to go by. - ----- Nicole Lindroos Seattle, WA nikchick@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 07:42:56 -0400 From: "cheddarcat" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V4 #115 phil wrote: > It's seemed very evident to me that Liz was having problems with the > marriage, "Go On Ahead"............and the split doesn't surprise me at > all......I hope she is dealing well with it of course......... yes, it's true, i remember her saying something like she had to be careful what she put on WCSE b/c she didn't want to freak out her husband too much? or something like that. I do like 'go on ahead', to me that's one of the best on there. > ...........AND I would love to > see Liz cover a Joni Mitchell song..........!!!! me too! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 07:52:46 -0700 From: "Dana Polachowski" Subject: go on ahead wow!! oh my god.... so she's getting the big D. yikes. i'm not sure you could ever really tell in her interviews that there were problems. she said many nice things. and, hey, NO WONDER that one "elle" thing was all about shopping. now, if she talked about anything she recently did to her hair--that woulda been a major clue. as someone said, you can't really tell in her songs, 'cause she makes stuff up and twists and molds things. on the other hand, as someone else pointed out, "go on ahead" has a creepy funereal vibe that's almost "too much information." it's kinda obvious. just like shawn colvin's "get out of this house." that one makes me a little uncomfortable, in fact, 'cause i know she wrote and recorded that during her own acrimonious split. and the stuff she says in there--yikes! anyways, this reminds me of that "seinfeld," the one with debra messing where he's hot for her and she's getting a divorce--after 3 years of marriage--and he's trying to "console" her, right, and he says "three years...that's a long time." the poor woman--everyone's gonna be tracking her dating life like mad. dp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 10:36:38 -0500 From: Brandon.Jeffers@edwardjones.com Subject: liz lyrics on the soprano's? was watching episode #6 from the first season of the soprano's and the story of the young bull and the old bull standing on top of the hill came up!! is this story common knowledge in pop culture or was liz the author (girlysounds, i forget which song)? also, i am seeking liz's videos on VHS tape since i have had Mtv for years and never seen any of her stuff (do they even play videos anymore?). if someone has them please contact me and we can work something out. thanks, brandon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 08:40:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Gabriel Peterson Subject: Re: Phair Prognostications Okay, every relationship has issues and almost all songwriters deal with issues by expressing themselves in a song. Sometimes they are more direct about the actual problem or it might be something similar to show how they feel. I doubt they (Liz and hubby) broke up as a result of four problems and I doubt that there are many relationships out there which have had less than four problems (or however many songs people are referencing for how they saw this coming). Maybe the problem was that her husband read into these songs as much as a few of you have and blew them out of proportion. It also could be that he decided that he couldn't satisfy this sex-crazed lady that he found in some of the songs (without the aid of a locomotive, at least) or couldn't stand how often she seems to get headaches. It's wonderful how intimate many of her songs are but remember that they are not (necessarily) her life. It very well could be but I think we should wait to hear her validate it.... Let's not forget that Jon Brion produced Aimme Mann's "I'm with Stupid" and worked on her first ablum, "Whatever". Also, Jon Brion wrote the score for Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece "Magnolia," which Aimee Mann wrote most of the songs for...the same Paul Thomas Anderson who wrote "Boogie Nights", for which Michael Penn wrote the score... the Michael Penn who is indeed married to Amy Mann. Liz has said herself before in interviews that a lot of times she embellishes things in her lyrics, or makes them up from imagining a certain situation, in order to make her songs more interesting and more easy to relate to for her audience. When it comes down to it, no one really knows what goes on behind her closed doors. Marriage is hard no matter who is doing it, and it is especially hard for people in the entertainment industry. It is sad, though, that the chick who brought us "Fuck And Run" in times of upset and then "What Makes You Happy" in a time of marital bliss is no longer having marital bliss. Andrea
