Am I the > only one who suspected that this was the case and is not surprised to hear > this news? > thanks for the enlightenment re SAG cards... does this mean she's an "actor"? ?? I guess my take on the troubled songs is that yes they are about some trouble in a relationship, but, since they are songs, you can't necessarily take them to be about her troubled marriage... they could just be expressions of anger or a mood, directed at anything, put into a song... For example, bars of the bed--'when i wanna go out, i tell my husband i'm working late' -- i never took this to be a statement of what liz herself does, but more like she's commenting on the phenomenon itself of how people deal with boring marriages--not necessarily how she deals with hers all the time. She did say that those amazing songs in Exile that seemed to be so much about some particular person were actually all just made up stuff. (I find it hard to believe they weren't actually inspired in some way by actual people/ events but who knows.) So even if the new troubled songs are definitely about her marriage, it could just be that they had some typical disagreement or marriage-type fight and she fashioned a song out of it--this wouldn't necessarily mean that there was divorce down the road.... Anyhow, it seems a lot of those new troubled songs were probably about her relationship w/ her husband, but unless she actually confesses that they are in an interview, I wouldn't want to assume it. I just don't think she's said much in interviews about trouble in her marriage, at least not in the ones I've read. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 11:42:06 -0400 (EDT) From: steve the dyke-tyke Subject: bite your tongue you fucking bastard. (noliz content) There goes courtney again, bashing women musicians. "the only girl"...as if girls are inherently incapable of holding and playing "the fuck out of" a Les Paul?! We all know that isn't true. One day courtney is super-rad and pro-women musicians, and the next day she goes back to her cattiness insisting that very few women can play music well. sigh. Has anyone heard the deal about Kat Bjelland and Bastard? This is totally word of mouth, so you know. But someone told me that Courtney's management contacted Kat's management and asked her if she wanted to help write songs and play for Bastard. Evidently they laid down the law right there: no drugs in the studio, must practice X number of hours a day, etc. Anyways, Kat supposedly kindly declined. isn't that interesting? I thought there was nastiness between the two..."bruised violet"..."she walks over me". Hmm. Has anyone else heard the Kat/Bastard thing? anyone have the 411 on kat's new band's record? steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 11:16:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Andy Peters Subject: Liz's new album re: possibility of Michael Penn co-producing her new album; isn't Michael Penn married to Aimee Mann? interesting that for a while this email forum was dominated by Aimee Mann-related postings, and now her husband could possibly be working on Liz Phair's next record. re: Liz moving to LA; apparently part of the reason for the move was being the result of her divorce, and also she apparently wants to be closer to the music industry, and more recording studios. But I'm also thinking this is a good way for Liz to get into acting, living in LA. It's always struck me as a possible career option for her, especially with her interest in directing her own videos, and her interest in modeling, and since she was in the Apple computer ad. I could definitely see Liz starting to do things, after her new album comes out, related to film or TV. Oh, and also her contributions to the movie "Julie Johnson", although apparently that was a music-only participation. Andy P. Decatur Yahoo! And as for the new batch of songs hopefully being different than WSCE...............well, I really enjoyed WSCE and thought it was a great album, and a sign of artistic growth......I too have been a fan since "Exile" and that "Exile" is my fav Liz album by far, but I disagree about the supposed "lameness" of the album..........I have a really strong feeling that the new album will be even more mainstream..................and as for the rumor that Michael Penn might be co-producer, I can only hope that isn't true..... That's a BAD combination!!!!! She should just stick to Brad Wood, and maybe throw some Jon Brion in there for fun...........AND I would love to see Liz cover a Joni Mitchell song..........!!!! later PHIL ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #115 ************************************
