Almost every post motivated me in a forcing-myself-to-respond way. Ive been so busy that I have a chronic headache but my boss is finally gone on maternity leave so Im allowing myself some slack time. So, uh HI! <(:D Megan wrote: >> PS--I just moved to Boston, don't quite know the city. Where are places to hear good music, hang out with friends, etc? << Where in Boston? I work and live in town and go to at least one show a week we should get together! I enjoyed your post btw there was a fantastic independent film called Payoff that featured three Boston women rockers and one of the issues/topics was the notion of being considered hot or even cute the rock stars each answered questions about the idea of matching the stereotypes of attractiveness and how it affects stage presence and often their fame and fortune, too. Laurie Geltman (is playing in Boston soon) also mentioned that people act shocked when she tells them shes not a folk singer. As if, since shes not wearing heels and a mini-skirt, running back and forth on a stage while screaming, shes not really a rocker. Kay Hanley (?thats her name right?) of Letters to Cleo was asked by one jackass reporter, How do you feel about being cute? she replied, inhaling and blowing smoke, if you really know me you wouldnt ask that there are many things people could say about me and (loudly) BEING CUTE is not one of them. :o) Howdidyougetinsidemyhead #1 Kisko wrote: >>Specifically, I was referring to the recent full band tours, where songs that required Liz to play her famously complex rhythm guitar were stripped down so that, instead of Liz playing strange chords/riffs to get all the bass/lead notes in, she left the "difficult" stuff to Buddy Judge, and she just played (really boring) barre chords or first-guitar-lesson basic chords. << Ok psychic, wanna know what I was doing last night when I couldnt sleep? Thinking about this ^^^ .. and I had not even read the last few digests. A killer example of this is Johnny Feelgood from the Lounge Ax disc hell from the whole Lounge Ax show!!! It was supposed to be Liz solo but she got Buddy to join last minute -- as opposed to the NYC benefit when she called in the whole band as back-up singer Janet said, I woke up and got a phone call and when I hung up I thought um, okay, I guess Im going to New York? But youve got to listen to Feelgood from 3/14/99 its my absolute favorite version of the song, simply because of the guitar duel. I must say I do agree that in the old daze the rift would be from her fingers alone but I love the way they compliment one another in this one. I desperately wish all of her songs had longer lyric-less jams in the middle of them. For crying out loud there was a b) and now its lost forever. It makes so much sense to get them cleaned up the best we can and this is going to be tiding us over? Easing the pain? (I had a hard time finishing that sentence, do I need to go to a clinic for this or something?) I am still concerned about concert noise/cheering and and I have to admit Im concerned with Flower mostly am i a self-centered wench? ;o) just kidding the noise on my copy is a little crazed and my source to fix it is current MIA Jase I am writing you back with all this but damn did you have to write so much important stuff?? How am I supposed to respond to that maybe Ill block time on my schedule. ;o) (also seriously never worry about writing me back, I give myself at least a two week grace period before I allowed the guilt of many years of catholic education to haunt and traumatize me into reply-mode) yeah yeah yeah dont apologize yeah yeah yeah :o) Yourescaringmecutitouteeeeeeeeeeek #4 Jase-dawg >>For example, last night I worked on cleaning up "I Know It's Not Easy" (also known as "Ant in Alaska" on some copies), and while there is still a fair amount of tape hiss, it doesn't have that metallic hiss << Stop it. BUT I have an issue that I want to raise and granted this is just my jackass opinion (also I wouldnt be surprised if this has been discussed before I joined the digest in summer of 1998). I am like 99.999% sure that she is singing AUNT in Alaska ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You said if I waited itd pay off is there something wrong whats taking you so long enough I know its not easy I know youve forgotten The promise you made to me I think thats rotten one f*cking measly clue But Im just an aunt in Alaska to you ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ shes searching and waiting and searching and hes acting like she means nothing to him except when she comes in handy maybe a casual thanks-for-the-birthday-cash, aunt in Alaska, wait - whats your name again? LOS ANGELES Former indie-rock poster girl Liz Phair is expected to enter the studio within the next month to finish work on her fourth album, according to her management office. The singer has been writing and demoing material sporadically over the past two years and has about 35 songs contending for the follow-up to 1998's Whitechocolatespaceegg. The songs range from radio-friendly pop to experimental rock with nontraditional arrangements. Phair hopes to release the album later this year. Up-and-coming singer/songwriter Pete Yorn and musician R. Walt Vincent played on and co-produced the most recent batch of tracks. Phair has not yet picked a producer for the final session, but longtime collaborator Brad Wood and singer/songwriter Michael Penn are among the possibilities. Wood produced Phair's Exile in Guyville (1993) and Whip-Smart (1994) and co-produced Whitechocolatespaceegg. Not bad news though, the album has a good chance of being really good. - -Dan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 00:59:28 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "cheddarcat" Subject: guitar > < to me doesn't even need a lead guitar on top of it, and which isn't much > there on WCSE.>> > > That's exactly what I was talking about -- that "really complex rhythm > guitar" playing *incorporates* bass & lead into the rhythm, and it's just > mostly not there on WCSE. If you ever get a chance to see a video > bootleg of her 1995 solo electric tour (the peak of her career, I swear), i have seen that, and you don't need to see it actually, just listening is enough, and that's just what i mean when i say i'd rather not see her tour with a band. i'd definitely see her if it was just her. (her band really got on my nerves, and not just because they took away her guitar playing. on stratford-on-guy the keyboardist was wildly flailing his arms, pretending to be one of those people who flags in planes?? sorry i can't think of the word.. and the backup singer was so alarmed, she looked at him like 'what?? what's wrong?? Is there a fire??? it was PAINFUL!) anyhow, my point is just that THIS is one of main reasons i don't enjoy WCSE very much, the fact that her guitar playing is just blah. i just didn't know what you meant by saying that liz used to play bass. i thought i was missing something. judy ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #111 ************************************
