Some things I thought of: There is no place in music for a simple voice anymore. It is all about marketing for the entire mass media. Britney writes novels. Beyonce is Carmen. Liz peddles Apple. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be stifling. It means that women who rock can't sell records if they don't have the look, style or overall Wal-Mart approved image. When was the last time an ugly woman got sustained airplay? Or a single teeneaged mother who ran with the wrong crowd? The women are all beautiful and pure, sexy in a unthreatening, non-sexual sort of way. The sort of girl the Conservative Southern Father would want to befriend his daughter. I watched part of the Popstars marathon when it was on MTV a few weekends ago. (Forgive me, I was too hungover to reach the remote.) Most of the time was spent detailing their photo shoots and costume changes. The music was discussed only in the context of a competition--who was going to sing the lead? It thought it was telling of the music business as a whole. And to the person who said that JD Salinger never had a worthwhile book after "Catcher in the Rye"--go out and read "Nine Stories"--It's an amazing book of short fiction. Anyway, thought I'd throw in my $.02 while I'm waiting for this damn client to call back. I'll go back into my cave now. Thanks Megan PS--I just moved to Boston, don't quite know the city. Where are places to hear good music, hang out with friends, etc? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 18:05:02 EDT From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: poe what have the singles been from poes "haunted" so far? i think they were "haunted", "walk the walk", and now "hey pretty", right? ive heard hey pretty on the radio a lot lately, but i never heard "walk the walk". were there any videos for these songs (besides, obviously, hey pretty)? mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 00:10:47 From: "steve kisko" Subject: guitar playing clarification cheddarcat asks: <> Never... <> That's exactly what I was talking about -- that "really complex rhythm guitar" playing *incorporates* bass & lead into the rhythm, and it's just mostly not there on WCSE. For some reason, Liz decided that, for the most part, she would play REALLY basic rhythm guitar and let the other musicians play "real" leads, etc. Specifically, I was referring to the recent full band tours, where songs that required Liz to play her famously complex rhythm guitar were stripped down so that, instead of Liz playing strange chords/riffs to get all the bass/lead notes in, she left the "difficult" stuff to Buddy Judge, and she just played (really boring) barre chords or first-guitar-lesson basic chords. If you ever get a chance to see a video bootleg of her 1995 solo electric tour (the peak of her career, I swear), notice how busy her guitar playing is on, say, "Cinco de Mayo" and compare it to her performance of that song on the "WCSE tour" (perhaps the 4/12/99 show, widely available on eBay). It's extremely disappointing. steve _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 00:34:37 -0400 From: "Michael Honaker" Subject: baby got going / poe I can't remember exactly what was said, but someone said something like Liz didn't write the lyrics to "Baby Got Going".... Am I blind or am I the only one that has liner notes that says "...and "Baby Got Going" Lyrics and Melody by Liz Phair, Music written by Scott Litt..." ? I suppose if it were true that Litt wrote the entire song, the beginning of the liner notes wouldn't say "All songs by Liz Phair". or did Matador get the text wrong when they printed the LP? Who knows. Oh yeah - "Hey Pretty" by Poe... Her brother is not "singing" actually - He's reciting. It was a mix of the song that Poe sent to a radio station on cd-r to try to get it on the air. That version is on one of the Haunted / House of Leaves promo cds. It goes along with the book. end of transmission. michael ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 00:49:53 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Phairities/Girly Sound Hey everyone, Just a quick note to let everyone know that the Phairities CDs are just about finished. I received a package in the mail from Ken Lee today that includes everything I need to put the finishing touches on the discs. Expect at least one surprise that wasn't on the original track list I posted a while ago. Overall, I'm pretty psyched about these CDs and can't wait for the distribution of them to begin. To that end, if anyone would be willing to help make copies for other list members, please e-mail me and let me know. If you've already volunteered back when I first announced I'd be compiling these discs, please let me know as a reminder in case I've forgotten. I'd like to be able to distribute these on CDs only, instead of cassettes, so you will need to have a CD burner. Also, your software should allow you to burn in disc-at-once (DAO) mode -- otherwise, the two second gaps between tracks will prove to be a problem, as not everything will then fit. For all of those who'd be interested in obtaining copies of all these Liz rarities but do not have CD burners, please be patient. Once I have enough volunteers to make copies, I'll announce sign-ups for a CD tree to distribute the discs. Everyone who wants a set of the discs will be able to get them. After the distribution of the Phairities discs takes place, expect a Girly Sound tree next. I've gotten a fair amount of positive feedback from my attempt to clean up "In Love With Yourself" and have decided to go ahead and start cleaning up the rest of the tracks as best as I can. Keep in mind that this material will never sound perfect, so that's not what I'm aiming for -- I just want it to sound *better* than the discs Patrick Oltraver made four or five years ago. For example, last night I worked on cleaning up "I Know It's Not Easy" (also known as "Ant in Alaska" on some copies), and while there is still a fair amount of tape hiss, it doesn't have that metallic hiss that is on Patrick's CDs. To my ears, tape hiss is more acceptable than the digital debris from the noise reduction on those CDS. That's one of the worst tracks though, quality-wise, on all of the copies circulating; most of the others should clean up much more nicely. My goal ultimately is to clean up the songs as best as I can without introducing any of that metallic hiss or losing much of the dynamics of the music. We'll see how it goes...
