It's in the updates/news section of my site, but I'll post an excerpt to whet your appetite: "Koch Records has announced that it will release the soundtrack for "Julie Johnson"... The soundtrack will feature, among others, new songs from Liz Phair and Jason Morphew... Although full details of the soundtrack aren't yet available, Morphew... said he has already heard Liz Phair's contributions and told us that "...they're the best Phair songs I've ever heard." I wonder if this will generate as much discussion as the "Elle" article did! ;) - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com MeSmErIzInG - AnOtHeR LiZ PhAiR WeBsItE http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 05:50:19 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Girly Sound Oh, dear Lord, what have I gotten myself into? For some reason totally unknown to me, the thought has crossed my mind that maybe one of these days, I should maybe make an attempt at cleaning up my Girly Sound tapes and see if I can do a better job than Patrick Oltraver did with his Bliss & Fetish discs. So, somehow earlier this evening (oh shit, it's almost morning now -- make that many, many hours ago), I managed to dig up my Girly Sound tapes and I've made an initial attempt at cleaning up one of the songs. Now, I'm still relatively new at using Cool Edit Pro and I'm not totally sure I'm up to the task. Rather than put myself through the work of cleaning up both cassettes right away, I want to make sure that the results I'm capable of achieving are worth the time and effort that would be involved to do this. The song I chose to attempt was "In Love With Yourself," which is one of the more brutal ones on both Oltraver's discs and any cassette copies I've had of Girly Sound. If anyone wants to give me some feedback on my end result compared to whatever copies they have, I would appreciate it. I'm going to make an mp3 of it and upload it to the Web. Whoever wants to give it a listen can e-mail me and I'll send you the URL to download it. I'll probably encode it at 192 kbps or higher to preserve quality, so whoever would like to volunteer should probably have a cable or DSL connection -- the file will be huge and may take forever to download otherwise. Also, in case anyone's wondering about the status of the Phairities project, I hope to have everything wrapped up soon. Ken Lee, who I swear must be a saint, has sent me sonic upgrades of a few things and once they arrive in the mail, I'm going to finish creating the master discs. At that point, I will announce sign-ups for a CD tree to distribute the compilation, and anyone who is interested in getting a copy will be able to. If this whole Girly Sound thing does end up being worth pursuing, we can tree those next. Hey Guys, Well, first of all it's nice to see some real action on this list. If nothing else comes from any of this, I think a nice healthy argument about Liz is what we need to release our anger about there being no new album . . . But I have to say I'm a little mixed on this whole issue. I'd like to start by saying that Liz Phair is brilliant. We all know that. Exile in Guyville is an unmistakable masterpiece. Whip-Smart has traces of that brilliance, and WCSE is simply a remarkably wonderful record. Chances are Phair will never capture what she did with Exile. She had more to say with that album. She had more to prove. She was angry. She chose her words carefully, but didn't hold back anything. There was also a lot of innocence there. When she wrote most of those tracks she didn't think they would ever be recorded. She didn't have the faintest clue as to how an album was put together. So, she made the greatest decision an artist ever could . . . she fashioned it after Exile on West Main Street. This gave the album more of a direction. It also gave it a context, a reason for being (I'm a little drunk now and just had a big fight with my boyfriend so excuse me if I'm being a little over-dramatic). Exile in Guyville moves. It can easily be broken up into movements like a great piece of classical music. Phair will never create anything like this again. She no longer has that blind innocence. As for the article. I was a little shocked, but after I thought about it awhile I suddenly realized how ridiculous I was being. Let's be real, I have a feeling most of us on this list are fairly similar (I know I am going to get hate mail about this). It is my feeling most of us are educated, upper-middle class, urban, white (I hate myself for saying this just as much as you hate me for having written it) folks who also like to do a lot of shopping. This is why we listen to Liz. Her lyrics are about this that we care about. And when we get right down to it, none of those things are not very important. But to us they are. I also think she's certainly a little egocentrical. So am I. This is WHY I like her. Her songs poke fun at that people who have screwed her over. And I like that. On the other hand . . . Liz is still an artist. And as an artist, her job is to make music. To put out albums, and to tour, and to talk about her music. Being prolific is part of what makes some artists greater than others. For example, I think if PJ Harvey only made three albums I wouldn't be that impressed . . . but her work as a whole is quite remarkable. I look down on any artist who doesn't release as much work as they can. Of course she wants to stay home and take care of her kid. I'm sure there are a lot of moms in America who would like to do the same. But they have to and want to work. It's not that hard to put a studio in your house and release one album a year. And this is what I expect from someone as brilliant as Liz Phair. james P.S. And they same goes for Kim Deal!! If anyone has any info on her or The Breeders please contact me. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 09:07:41 -0400 From: "cheddarcat" Subject: girls girls girls > From: Standingsixfeet1@aol.com > Subject: Girls! Anyone know? Thanks. Is it where she says 'don't stop at murder!'? great line as far as that elle article goes.... i have to admit that as much as i wish i were a pure spiritual thing, buying things does have therapeutic value for me... though i tend to binge at places like k-mart etc.... i have to say i can't relate to liz very well now, but, that's life ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 11:16:29 -0500 From: "kimberly ann" Subject: Re: Julie Johnson info thanks for breaking the news again ken. i can't wait to hear the soundtrack! i bet they are awesome >Hi everyone, >Just found some "Julie Johnson" information.
