Simpson www-scf.usc.edu/~rlew **************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 03:54:35 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Phairities Okay, I'm probably doing the usual Jase thing of taking far too much on at any given time, but that seems to be par for the course. A fellow list member sent me some software on Friday night which has proven invaluable in transferring some of my Liz shows/rarities on cassette to CD, something I've spent a good part of the weekend doing (although at this rate, it'll still be months before I have everything done). It got me to thinking about a couple of things: first, that Ken is a saint for all the work he's done to make the WCSE Sessions available to everyone; second of all, how I have a fair amount of music that I'd like to share with as many fellow Liz phans at possible. A bunch of y'all who have been around for a few years will remember the 'Phairities' tape I compiled sometime in 1996. Well, I'm starting to think it's about time to replace all those cassette copies with a CD edition, expanded to include some things that have surfaced since the original tape was compiled. Also, I have much better source material now for many of the songs, such as "I'll Get You High" and even a better-sounding (although still not flawless) recording of "You Have No Idea." It makes sense to put a new version together. It'd end up being at least two discs, maybe three, and there would be a lot of work involved. I'm not going to say it'll happen right away, but hopefully not all that far off. Here's a rough idea of what I'm thinking of including: 1. I'll Get You High (better source than the original comp) 2. You Have No Idea (better recording as well) 3. Wasted 4. Hurricane Cindy (as performed on 'Morning Becomes 'Eclectic' -- much better recording than the previous one) 5. Beginning To See The Light 6. Firewalker 7. Don't Apologize 8. I'm A Believer 9. Love/Hate Transmission 10. Conversation Overheard Between Two Bouncers 11. Stranger 12. Divorce Song/Emotional Rescue 13. Wild Thing (from the Lounge Ax show) 14. Flower (from the Lounge Ax show, Liz's duet with list member Katie Brown) 15. If I Ever Pay You Back (better recording than before) 16. Sometimes A Dream (Is What Makes You A Slave) 17. Oh My God/That's The Way I Like It (hopefully I can clean this one up a little bit) 18. Never Said (live version from Lilith Fair 3 disc) 19. Fuck And Run (live version from Random Acts 2 disc) [All of the above are live recordings.] 20. Away With The Pixies (Ben Lee song that Liz contributed backing vocals to) 21. Infidel (Ashtray Boy song that Liz contributed backing vocals to) 22. Shirley MacLaine (another Ashtray Boy song with Liz) 23. Animal Girl (since _Juvenilia_ is out of print now) 24. Turning Japanese (ditto) 25. Don't Have Time (from the Higher Learning soundtrack) 26. Combo Platter (girlysound) (since the "Supernova" single has went the way of _Juvenilia_) 27. Rocket Boy (from the Stealing Beauty soundtrack) 28. Six Dick Pimp (from the Brain Candy soundtrack) 29. Stuck On An Island (from the What's Up Matador compilation) 30. Carnivore (from the Minty Fresh anthology CD -- much nicer sounding than before!) 31. Carnivore (Raw) (same as above) 32. Whip-Smart (Remix) (from the promo-only "Whip-Smart" single -- before I only had a taped copy, now I have the disc itself) 33. White Babies (from the Chinny Chin Chin: 4 N.Y. Bands comp) 34. Erecting A Movie Star (Liz with Shudder to Think, from the First Love, Last Rites soundtrack) 35. Misfortune (theme song from Cursed) 36. Polyester Bride (live, from the Just Passin' Thru 2 comp) 37. Hurricane Cindy (from the Japanese pressing of WCSE) 38. Greased Lightning (from the Japanese single for "Polyester Bride") 39. White Bird Of Texas (same as above) 40. The Tra La La Song (from the Saturday Morning Cartoons CD) And maybe a couple of other things, if there's room for 'em. Other than "White Bird of Texas," "Greased Lightning" and "Hurricane Cindy," there'll be no _WCSE Sessions_ material. I'm only including those because they've already been released more widely. The sessions material should really be heard in its entirety, separate from anything else. Also, I don't want this project to steal any of Ken's thunder, after all of his time and effort to make that material available for everyone. Some of the material from the original 'Phairities' tape, things like the live versions of "Mesmerizing" and "Fuck and Run" will likely not be included. I'd rather leave those off in favor of other rarities -- preference definitely goes to songs that haven't been previously released in any form before, or things of greater 'rarity' value. Also, while a lot of this material will sound much better than on the previous cassette compilation, there are still some things that I don't have very good quality versions of. The good thing about distributing this via CD is that at least there won't be a loss of quality with each subsequent generation. I'd hate to think of how some of the songs from the 'Phairities' cassette sounded after, say, five or six generations of dubs. If anyone has good quality versions of "Love/Hate Transmission" and "Stranger" and wouldn't mind sharing them, I'd really appreciate it. I also wouldn't mind a copy of the Just Passin' Thru 2 compilation; I just have an mp3 of the version of "Polyester Bride." If worse came to worst, though, I could just use that. No biggie. One last request, if anyone at all has a CD-R of Liz's April 30, 1999 Wellesley, MA show and would like to trade or loan me a copy, you'll be the first person to get a copy of the finished product. I have a copy of this show and absolutely love it, but my CD-Rom drive can't seem to read it, so I can't digitally extract the audio from it. The versions of "Firewalker" and "Don't Apologize" are the best ones I've heard, and I'd love to include them. God, I can't believe I'm about to take something like this on, but the new album may still be a while off and listening to "You Have No Idea" is enough to cloud one's judgement... Cheers, Jase NP: Liz Phair, April 25, 1995, Town Hall, New York City, NY (lovingly transferred to CD this weekend) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 06:33:26 -0600 From: "Allison" Subject: Liz quote in Details Liz is quoted in the April issue of Details, talking about musician Pete Yorn: " 'I'd heard he was a good-looking guy, but I wasn't sure about the music until I saw him,' says Phair from a booth at the Viper Room in West Hollywood, where Yorn played a string of Friday-night gigs in December. 'I've already memorized the lyrics to my favorite songs' " The article also notes that Yorn's album, musicforthemorningafter, is produced by Brad Wood. Has anyone heard his music? It is described as "passionate folk-pop in the tradition of Freedy Johnston and early Springsteen" Does Liz hanging at the Viper Room mean that she is now a Los Angelean? Allison ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 07:06:02 -0800 (PST) From: Emil Breton Subject: Apple ad I am happy to report that last night, during a totally unfunny Simpsons rerun, I finally caught what I think was the abridged version of the Apple ad (abridged in the sense that Liz only said "sure" and not "sure, anything for you" as has been reported). That I caught a shortened version probably makes my opinions less valid than the next man's, but I just have this to say: Nice hair, Liz. It's a throwback to those wonderful slightly unkempt days (1993-1996), when her hair was -- how do you say -- layered? I like that. Of course, I am one of those people who wish Liz would've never "grown" as an artist, never changed her look or sound, etc. Do you all prefer Liz's look from the Exile/whip-smart days or her whitechocolatesoccermom thing she had going 2 years ago? Starting with that photo in Alternative Press that ran with the "An Evening with..." preview, and continuing through her many appearances on VH1, Liz seems to be returning to her older look, much to my delight. It seems to me that A >LOT >more people have access to and taped copies of albums than people I know >who >even understand or use Napster. > >Any thoughts????? I think what pissed Metallica off is the fact people were trading copies of songs they hadn't even released yet. Blank tapes and writable cds aren't too bad because supposedly it's a limited range of people that you'll get it to-- and perhaps people will get tired of burning/taping so they'll make their friends by the actual album. But Napster allows trading with some nameless person from Europe or Asia or wherever, and it's pretty damn easy. I'm on Napster's side-- I've heard bands (mostly suggested by this list) that I never would have been exposed to, and that's better for the smaller bands. Metallica's not going to lose millions of dollars because of Napster or Audiogalaxy or anything. What aggravates me now is when I try to download some "artists'" work, I can't because the server doesn't want to get sued. Now I'm definitely not going to purchase their work because I haven't been exposed to enough of it. Oh well, Chris _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 12:49:00 -0500 From: Mike Marlatt Subject: Coldplay live May I echo the sentiment of Sally. (re: Jase's 3/14 shout-out) Yeah lounge axers! I miss you guysit was so great to come back from a lil vaca and see posts from Jase, Craig and Jorge in reference to the best Liz experience of my life. Ill never forget dragging Jorge and Craig around with my HS friends for green beer and corn beef on rye the night before the show, meeting Jase and Jill in the line and sneaking peeks inside during Lizs (mesmerizing) sound check, eating a tuna melt with Jorge and being super nervous for the show, meeting Janet in the show, cheering when Liz asked us if we knew any girly sounds sets, taking the stage with Liz for flower - the biggest rush of my life! hearing conversation overheard between two bouncers for the first time, having a beer with buddy after the show, watching Liz just chill around the bar with her friends before she called us the international club and thanking her for the best time ever. Damn I miss you guys and I miss Liz! When I tell people about the Lounge Ax show, I sometimes send them the article online that Craig and I were both quoted in and its crazy the dude totally messed up my quotes and I dont even care since I was just too damn excited after the show. But I had gone on about flower and the lyrics and how Liz writes things that women think but dont say that I feel that people are intimidated by her words because she is so strong and positive. He asked me if I was nervous and I said no but that my knees were shaking like crazy. He said, think youll have trouble sleeping? and I said yeah no doubt or something, but of course the only quote was I wont be able to sleep tonight! slacker. Would it have killed him to mention ONE thing I said about the lyrics? ;) wah wah wah, listen to me dude makes me look like a silly groupie -- and where would he get an idea like that? ;) Have to give a shout-out as well to Lani, Katie, Ruthie, Sandra, Ken, John Cotter, Bill in ct, Jenny, Steve Kisko - its true, I am alive. And Jase I am going to write you back the only down side to getting such a great email from an old friend is that a hasty reply wont do any justice same goes for my posting here Ive been too busy to put any good thought into anything. so thanks for the 3/14 shout-out.. ya got me! I am the estranged syster you never had... <(:D Quick update Ive applied to law schools in NY, SF, Boston and Chicago for the fall still live in south end/ back bay in Boston and loving it but ready for change. If I end up in Chicago I would be happy to have guests when Liz is on tour! I would much rather do it around a show... and she WILL tour again, I know it. remember how the band from spring 99 had so much fun together... by the Lupos show in Providence they were so looped up and chasing each other like brothers and sisters and even early wcse tour from fall 98, her stage presence was a world of difference from her solo days in 95. Love it. aaaahhhhh - Patience. :o) I was so happy to see Liz (and first mentioned!) in the Rip. Mix. Burn. ads! Shes hot as ever and damn kiddies - what a sweet new hairstyle. * meow * Give me Liz in red and Ill watch anything on tv. It just made me feel great I mean, the Krusty thing that somebody posted within the last few months saying that Liz was currently where-are-they-now status or something... it didnt really bother me, I mean, its Krusty - my favorite boozin' loud-mouth cartoon clown, and its just a joke, and pointing out her crude lyrics is the same spin every media jerk uses when they diss Liz. still, dudes, get a new angle! *yawn* okay, okay, maybe it DOES get to me. I guess get really defensive when it comes to Liz. One time I played the lounge Ax disc for a guy I was sorta seeing and he was such a dick about it! He kept saying, I cant believe you sang that, I cant believe you DID that- as if I should be ashamed! I was like, you sing on stage with your favortie artist and then come crying to me about how ashamed you are! Shes better. Shes smarter she knows exactly what shes doing. She was already laughing at shocked critics before she even recorded girly sounds. So I laugh, too... cuz I get it we all get it and were freakin psyched. Bring it on, Elizabeth! Im ready... :o) L8R - *smooch* peace and love, Katie Brown <(:D _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 16:00:53 -0500 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: kim deal/dancer in the dark. I did cry though...ehhe anyway, get the movie, dammit. I couldn't see anyone saying it is shitty. As for Kim Deal - I know someone said that she might very well be one of the greatest song writers next to Liz...Hmm..very interesting... and it's weird..I might actually agree with it. I've always loved her songs and they are completely innovative and even though it is hard to make heads or tails of what she is talking about at times - for some reason, she always gave me the impression that she wasn't trying to be pretentious... she always seems really down to earth in interviews - really fucking funny..and almost white trash in a really strange way. I remember her saying how all she cares about it "making music and smoking pot." It made me giggle..but she sure can write the songs...damn. If only she'd fucking record them. Christ. I saw bratmobile and the donnas last night in Detroit at the Magic Stick. Bratmobile was better than i ever could have dreamed!! they sounded so great and had such wonderful energy. It was amazing. They even opened with The Real Janelle! After one song, Allison yelled at some guy who was groping a girl during the song...she told him to stand in the back, and he did. very cool!!!!!!! I had such a blast during their set. I can't believe I finally got to see Bratmobile! Then the Donnas came on...they sounded pretty damn good. Better than i thought they would. I don't think they get a fair wrap... This is where the story goes sour. After the second or third song by The Donnas, this couple pushed in front of us (we were in the middle of the dance floor). It was a man (who looked like he was in his late 20s) and a girl who looked like she was in her late teens). They both seemed quite intoxicated, though I noticed that the girl could barely walk, she was falling all over the place. at one point she passed out in the guys arms (though, he kept dancing around, w/ her in his arms!). When stuff like this happens i usually get out of the way thinking "ewwww s/he's gonna puke on me!", but I became really worried, especially since the girl's eyes looked as if she had been drugged. She came to, and started swaying around with him. A couple songs later, she began to give him a handjob. My friend tapped the guy on the shoulder, he didn't respond. then they fell backward on us, and my friend shoved him. He still did not respond. I went to the front door, and told them that there was a problem and i didn't know who to go to. I told them that there was a couple having sex on the dancefloor, and that the girl did not look like she was ok. They sent a security guard to check it out. He said he saw nothing. So we went back to our spot, and noticed that the girl was slumped with her arms wrapped around him now. She had an "X" on her hand; she was under 21. the next thing i knew, they were engaging in fullblown sexual intercourse. I went back to the front and said "This is NOT ok with me, please do something." So the security guard and one of the owners or managers (im not sure who it was...) showed up, and i was telling the woman what happened. I said that they were having sex, and her face got all disgusted and she went "EWWWWWWWWW! GROSSS!!!!!! IM SO SORRY!!!!" It took me a couple seconds before i realized that she was mocking me. she didn't care. i told her that (even though it is completely ILLEGAL to do what they were doing!) the sex was not what i was concerned about. The girl did NOT seem ok. I pointed to how the girl had her arms around the guy and said "Her arms are wrapped around him becuase he's holding her up!! she'd be on the ground otherwise!!" So the security guard came back and was like "i asked her if she knows him and she said she does so there's nothing we can do". OK first of all 1) they were having sex. 2) It is irrelevant! "i know him" does not mean "he's my boyfriend". Why would a boyfriend do that to his girlfriend?!?! it was VERY clear to me that the girl was still in a very UNSAFE situation, and it was very clear that she was not able to give complete consent to this man she was with--all you had to do was look at her eyes, which were rolled back in her head!!!--regardless of who he was!!!! Yet they did not care. they did nothing. as a matter of fact, NO ONE in the area did anything to stop it. it was very upsetting. We decided to leave, we were so upset by this. On the way out, i ran into Allison from Bratmobile, and told her what happened. She seemed very disgusted and angry, but i don't think i made it clear enough (i was upset and spazzing and i don't make sense when im like that) that the girl was NOT okay. So we left, and let the Magic Stick people know how angry we were. They apologized. I left feeling so horrible. I felt horrible that there wsa nothing i could do. i felt horrible that the Magic Stick did not do anything about it. I love going there, it's one of my favorite detroit venues. But now i don't think i want to support an establishment that 1) condones public sex, and 2) doesn't care if underage intoxicated (drugged?!) girls are in unsafe situations. So many wonderful bands play there...i wonder if they know how much the place they are playing is against their politics. Sorry for this rant, and sorry if you get it more than once (i'm gonna send it to a couple lists). If you see this kinda stuff going on at any shows you go to, please, speak up and tell someone. Everyone knew this wsa going on, and no one said anything. And if you tell someone, and they don't do anything, let them KNOW that you are angry, let them know that it is NOT OKAY to condone situations like that. thanks for reading this, steve ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #77 ***********************************
