Kim" Subject: Blake Babies I went to see the Blake Babies at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill last night. It was a nice show. The Starlight Mints opened (from Oklahoma of all places) and they were quite listenable. The lead singer sounded like the lead singer of Suede (ok, the "London Suede" now, blah) whose name I can't remember at the moment. The Babies were pretty laid back, i just kinda sat back and let the show wash over me. I'm fairly sure that I have the first Babies album around here somewhere, but i can't find it, hence I didn't really know the songs anymore. Some guy in the audience kept yelling "John!" and then when John answered, he would yell "Woo!" Then Juliana introduced Daniel, the bassist. Mac from Superchunk (they seem to just drift into every show at the Cat's Cradle) yelled "Daniel! Woo!" The Babies commented on how this was the third location of the Cradle they've been to, but I don't remember them coming before (I was probably 8 years old, anyway). Juliana's been there seemingly dozens of times, but I only caught the last two songs when she came for Pony/Total System Failure, so this was a make-up show for me. I also noted that wearing a Weezer shirt elicits comments from girls ;> that is all. d. www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 06:16:06 -0500 From: "Jeff Doak" Subject: Apple commercial on your hard drive delurking: For those of you that have watched the commercial at apple.com, the files may still be on your computer. If you're using windows check your C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files directory. If you're using another operating system, it should still be there somewhere; these aren't streaming. :) Look for the following files: concert_long_T1.mov 21,218KB concert_T1.mov 12,038KB They run much nicer from your hard drive. Just copy them to a directory of your choosing. BTW, the long version doesn't have any extra Liz. Kind of like Kristin Hersh, when she recorded "Murder, Misery, and then Goodnight" for her sons, and was only made available at throwingmusic.com. she would never release that as an "official" album to be distributed to tower and such.. did anyone see Sarah on the Junos??? she was good...she was by herself and did a bruce cockburn song...but it was kind of lame the way they set it up...they were doing this huge tribute and, practically midsentence, the guy was like "and now, sarah harmer" did anyone see nelly furtado (aka birdlady)??? she's a freak! and oh ah, this kristin album is just grand. the first time i heard "spain," it slapped me in the face, and it slaps me just as hard every time i listen..."i wanted you to sleep with her, hate yourself instead of me"...ack. this lyrics are totally brutal on this cd!!! my other fave so far is Flipside...and listerine--they're perfect complements (or supplements? hmm..) Though i must say, Kristin has become a bigger pottymouth than Liz! The Blake Babies album also kicks my ass...Baby Gets High (the madder rose song) is on there!!!!!!! i wish i could see them live...i am so happy with this album. they're isn't a bad song on it...sigh...what would i do w/o juliana?! lessee what else...MMM the amy ray album is just brilliant!!! it sounds like a mix between Come On Now Social (well, the amy songs anyway) and the butchies. it's much more political than the indigo girls stuff too... oh, and the new ani double disc is pretty damn cool. the second disc is acoustic stuff...im sure all the ani "purists" will dig it and stop their bitchin ;) >>>NP: Bikini Kill, _The CD Version of the First Two Records_<<< iieeeeee. i've been addicted to reject all american lately, who knows why jase, you should come to ladyfest midwest chicago in august...it sounds like it's gonna be great! plus, le tigre is playing ;) no candy for you! steve "it's not an awful secret, you know, it's just a secret" - kristin hersh ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 10:16:31 EST From: ReallyHip@aol.com Subject: Re: Tuscadero Tuscadero has two albums, My Way or The Highway and The Pink Album... There are two versions out of each. They also have the 'Step Into my Wiggle Room' EP. (Which includes the fantastic 'Angel In A Half Shirt' and 'Holidays R Hell'.) Does anyone know if they've broken up? The last Ive heard of them was right before their last release 'My way or the highway', and I've got a sneaking suspicion that they're now gone. Is anyone else thinking we should all do this again next time Liz tours (and please God, let it be soon!)?<< Wow! Was it really two years ago?! Seems like it was just yesterday. Well, sort of. It's a shame that the Lounge Ax isn't around anymore. I would have loved to have seen Liz return there for another show in support of the new album. Either way, I'm definitely up for another meeting at some Chicago venue whenever Liz decides to tour again. >>For that matter, are there any plans for another Phest in the works? Bad >>timing and a lack of extra cash prevented me from taking part last year, >>but if something were to happen this year, I'd do everything I could to >>try to be there...<< Well, as co-organizer of last years Phest, I can tell you that we had a great time. Unfortunately I will more than likely not be able to take part in this years Phest should one take place. There's a slim chance that I could make it, but right now it's not looking good right now. I have way too much going on in my life right now. I see there's been alot of Courtney Love/Hole talk recently. I'm hoping whatever dispute with universal is settled soon because I can't wait for the new Hole record. I'm especially looking forward to the contribution that Hole drummer Samantha Maloney will make to the new record. Everyone always says how much they miss Patty, but I think Sammy Lee is a far superior drummer. I think she's going to bring a whole new powerful dynamic to the band. I saw her perform live with Motley Crue for the Maximum Rock tour last summer and she completely blew me away with her explosive drumming and her use of the double bass drum. Hopefully Courtney will let her bring that same intensity to the next Hole record. Ok, this post is long anough. Adios! Hey Liz people, I know someone mentioned they were pulling out old CDs and stuff....kind of a neat semi-thread to start, since Liz's album feels like it's on fucking hiatus right now. Anyway, I have been listening to some really old school stuff that I haven't played in years - I took out "Automatic" by The Jesus and Mary Chain from 1989- and it's sooo fantastic!!! My all time favorite Jesus and Mary Chain album is "Stoned and Dethroned" - which listening to AUTOMATIC kind of prompted me to pop in as well. They are soo amazing. They have such a "Velvet Underground" way about them...the way the songs are soo simple, musically - and the guitar chords (seem) really simple, at least on "SToned and Dethroned" anyway. I've also been listening to Pixies "Trompe Le Monde" non-stop. Can't get enough of this CD... (Weird..I just realized, on that album the pixies cover Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head ON" (from AUTOMATIC) - holy FUCK - which Liz kind of covers in "Sometimes a Dream..") OH MY GOD!! I just brought what I thought was a useless, non-Liz post, and made the Liz link. Isn't that fucked??? It must have been subconscious of me. You all whitnessed it too!! I was literally just typing out my random bored thoughts when I realized all that shit up there - as I was typing. Just kidding. I knew all along - I'm just REALLY bored. Anyway, sorry to waste everyone's time - but fish out that old Jesus and Mary Chain album - and pop it in...I appreciate it soo much more now, having not listened to it for a few years. anyway, see ya soon.. Hey question: Does anyone ever wonder where the FUCK Kim Deal comes up with her words?!?! Like - her lyrics are LITERALLY fucked up - not that they are twisted - just that ...i have no idea if they actually MEAN anything - or are just words she picked because they sound cool. I mean, - I love her either way because she is soo damn musically innovative... but fuck - "He parked the car - just like a briar?!?!?!?" what the fuck is that?!?!? and "Humming eighty Venus..."?? or "I know I saw: and now may Die" - It's just strange..like, I hardly doubt she pulled these out of a hat - but HELL if I know what they mean. Wait.I should probably join a breeders list for this shouldn't I? Sorry to jumble up the Liz list with this crap. But if anyone has any interpretations - or a cool list I could join - email me. thank ya. dan. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 14:33:43 EST From: Emo5858@aol.com Subject: Re: one less thing... I just think that her lyrics are really abstract...I mean, isn't her style of writing essentially the same as Tori Amos's? They both have totally poetic ways of going about writing stuff... Oh, and I had my own twist to put on the "humming eighty venus"...It always made sense to me cos I always heard it as "hovering a venus"...as in a really beautiful, venus-like woman was "hovering"or lying overtop of you. Does anyone else see this...? Anyways, going back to lurking... lord of quarters, anastasia ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #73 ***********************************
