The Magnetic Fields album Charm of the Highway Strip is also worth having. I have one EP each of the Gothic Archies and Future Bible Heroes, and while I like them, they don't bring me back to them the way the 6ths does. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 04:36:41 -0600 (CST) From: Vasant Ramamurthy Subject: Re: Magnetic Fields / Nick Drake > I don't recall too much talk about them here, but let me recommend to > everybody the "69 Love Songs" box set by the Magnetic Fields and any/all of > the albums by Nick Drake. > > I'm not sure I can call myself an expert on either, but there are literally > dozens of songs on the box set that will either amuse you or break your heart > (or both) and the Nick Drake albums are for anyone in search of a mellow, > happy medium. > > If you aren't sure about either, try either Volume 1 or Volume 3 of the box > set (they're sold separately) or Nick Drake's "Bryter Layter" album. or, if you've got money to burn, i would buy the nick drake boxed set (4 discs), as well. he's one of those artists where he put out so little that you're guaranteed to buy them all anyways. i, too, am a recent fan. yes, the VW ad suckered me in. > Question: for all of those who know about Stephin Merritt's other releases > (as the Magnetic Fields, the 6ths, the Gothic Archies and the Future Bible > Heroes), is there somewhere else i should start? the 6ths is all stephin merritt songs with guest vocals from musicians. i personally like the first album, "wasps nests," better than the second. mary timony, lou barlow, and dean wareham are just a couple of people who sing on it. future bible heroes have 1 album & 1 EP, and it's totally '80s synth-pop type stuff. stephin doesn't actually write the music for them, just the lyrics. go with "memories of love" and relive the human league, depeche mode, etc. gothic archies--well, that's virgin merritt territory for me. supposedly it's really dark lyrically, from what i've heard about it. - -vasant - -- Listen to "I Know, It's Only Indie Rock" - Wednesdays 5-7 pm (central) on http://kwur.wustl.edu http://vasant.tsx.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 09:18:38 EST From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: Re: Magnetic Fields / Nick Drake Hey so ok... in case it wasn't known yet, Duncan Sheik released a new album this very week called Phantom Moon, which is a tribute to Nick Drake, so ya Drake fans might want to check it out. It'll be on the listening stations @ Barnes & Noble starting wednesday... that's all i have, other than to say that i totally agree 69 Love Songs is fantastic. "i think i need a new heart" is the kinda song that gets stuck in your head for days on end... :) rick the sun's gone dim, and the moon's turned black; for i loved him, and he didn't love back -dorothy parker stuff and nonsense by rick ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 15:12:19 From: "DarkSide oftheMoon" Subject: good for her Go Courtney! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #62 ***********************************
