OK, I just listened to the whole thing again, and definitely no Liz on that one. It is live though, so it probably is from Lillith. There's another thing that was labeled as Liz on napster that definitely wasn't--something called "Cold and Mean." I have no idea who that one is though. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 05:19:18 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: nonLiz on napster > > > has anyone heard of a song called 'you're aging well' > > > that liz sings with joan baez and dar williams. > >OK, I just listened to the whole thing again, and definitely no Liz on that >one. Of course, we are talking about Napster -- home of mislabeled/misindentified songs -- like that whole "Leaving on a Jet Plane" thing.... I actually laughed at this part!! I know everyone's sick of it - but this whole post made me laugh out loud for real!!!!! I have no idea why!!! Just to justify how sick everyone is of talking about selling out and napster - I am going to talk about it one more time. Everyone knows napster is there. Period. And everyone knows that people are going to be using it. Nothing you can do about it. Now, it's also a fact, that if everyone downloaded Liz Phair's album rather than buy it - her album wouldn't make squat for her or the record company - which would result in: dropping Liz like a sticky cherry out of Iggy's butt. UCK - could you imagine? I would drop that cherry pretty damn fast, so it is safe to say the same reaction would be shown by Capital. Now, it's also pretty safe to assume that anyone on this list who would download an advance copy of Liz's album, would also buy it - JUST so they could support their favorite artist and help her make a dent in the music biz. So nothing is hurt! Anyway, I only laughed at the email when the author said he/she was pissed off. I mean, christ - it's MUSIC!! There will always be music, and there will always be a way to getting it for free - with or without napster - even if we come down to taping each other copies of CDs and mailing them out to each other - there are always ways to get it for free, but I think when it counts - the fans will always support their favorite artist, especially when it is someone like Liz. As for Liz's music suffering a bit...I'm not even going to go there. I'm pretty damn critical when it comes to my favorite artists, but I don't see anything but originality on whitechocolatespaceegg and I think anyone who even hints at saying Liz has somehow "sold out" on this album just wants to hear themselves say the words. I'll be the first to admit, my favorite album by Liz is Guyville - but at the same time, my favorite David Bowie album is Hunky Dory - Does that mean Bowie sold out on Ziggy Stardust? Of course not!! It just means I like the other better. It doesn't take away any merit from other album being just as fantastic!! If it's good music, it is good music - and that's that. There is nothing anyone can do. I mean, even if it comes out now that WCSE was completely manufactured by the same guy who did all those boy bands - of course it would be a disapointment - but the songs would still be GOOD songs, regardless of who wrote them. Everyone is waaaaaaaaay too quick to judge music. Now, I just take music as it comes and as it sounds..I'm on snob-rehab. And it's NUTS!! Ever since I've taken up this new attitude, I've started appreciating music more!! It's working for me!! I like the Nina Gordon album now!! HOLEPARTS Mike should be happy to know that!!! I think it's really neat. It doesn't blow my mind, but I like it!!! Anyway, the cherries out of iggy's bum thing just made me chuckle, and basically I've ranted and raved for nothing and wasted everyone's time just now. I have to go cover some kind of "KID's DAY" event today, and Ronald McDonald is going to be there. HOw cool is that?!?!? I think I'm gonna skip the kids and completely focus on him, and center my story around it!!!! My magazine is gonna love me!!!!!! When I was a kid, I met Ronald McDonald - and he pulled me up on stage and was like "Hey..what's your name?" and I was like "Danny..." and he goes: "What's your last name...?" and I was like "MACDONALD!" and I swear, he gave me a dirty look and I swear to GOD it looked like he was thinking: "Whatever KID!! Ya right you're name is MacDonald - QUit kissing my ass!!!!!" He totally didn't believe me!!!!! I Was sooo hurt! So it's pay back time today!!! I'm gonna be the reporter who snaps the scandalous shot of him getting it on with Grimace and the Hamburgler!!!!! later peoples, Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 11:57:24 EST From: TempleU18@aol.com Subject: You're Aging Well I too downloaded this song off Napster thinking it must have been a misprint. But no - it certainly is Liz Phair singing with Joan Baez - and quite beautifully I might add. james ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 17:46:26 -0800 (PST) From: Emil Breton Subject: Re: Crater Lake > Could it be that Liz teamed up with them at Lilith > for the one song? I think it's another one of those "Leavin' on a jet plane" things. One idiot decides that Liz Phair is singing it, then it gets traded as such, even though Liz had nothing to do with it. re: "Crater Lake" -- this has always been one of my favorite tracks. I was always mystified by the lyrics, which I find challenging to this day. I first thought it was one of the 2 tracks on that album that Liz wrote about being "the next big thing," because I think the lyrics kind of allude to that. BUT, I think I know now that those 2 songs are "Nashville" and "Alice Springs." I THINK. I know "Nashville" is one, anyway. Actually, now that I think about it, "Crater Lake" could be the other one. Who knows! I do agree that there are allusions to college on "Crater Lake," but I'm not so sure it's one of the older Girlysound songs. I just have a feeling. I also think Liz could be equating some aspect of the college experience to her experience after Exile in Guyville. She has a funny way of making associations between two seemingly disparate situations. I think that's one of her most interesting traits as a writer. I think one thing that made me think "Crater Lake" was about sudden notoriety was that the "frightening my friends" line was quoted in articles in reference to her then-new fame. And "Alice Springs" I know was a last minute addition to the sequence (which is why there are no credits for it in the liner notes), so I kind of want to count it out as the other fame song. I'm really glad you brought this up, anyway. The one part of "Crater Lake" I can't figure out on guitar (from watching Liz play it) is the "all the tears" thing, which is like 4 elusive notes. Otherwise, I could have a complete tab worked out. Sorry for the steam-of-consciousness of this post. - -Emil Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I actually used "And oh, all the tears, in four tiny years, well look at me, I'm frightening my friends" as my college yearbook quote. My mom read it and didn't understand it all and thought it was a horrible quote. I tried to explain it to her, but I still think she didn't get it. Oh well. I've not downloaded it, but I've heard this duet so many times, being a Dar/Joan fan. Liz never dueted with them on You're Aging Well. Yeah it is like Leavign On A Jet plane. The duet is wonderful though. Dar's original version is good too, it's found on her album the Honesty Room. The duet is on Ring Them Bells, which is Joan's most recent live album. And I stared thinking, "What 'yeah' would this be?" And I wondered, "Do I get the 'yeah??'" So I was wondering, what's the yeah? I just figured many people might be wondering the same thing: what yeah? Oh, and I go to Temple too, whoever introduced himself, I'm sorry I don't remember the name. I didn't think there was a big Liz Phair fan base at TU. In fact, I didn't think there was any. I'm the girl walking around with the school bag that has "Liz Phair" stitched on it in white thread. :-) I try to get her name out there.
