Sorry, if I sent this to the list, but I'm probably not the only one who has forgotten to update their links. About the promoting spiel. I'm all for it, but it takes a lot of energy too. I've tried being on a street team, but it didn't work out cuz I hardly ever listened to the artist, but of course, it would be different with Liz. I'm not so sure about the album being available for download before its release. Downloading MP3s and what nots is nearly a taboo here since I'm not the only one using the computer. Oh well, smile away everyone. Not to be name-droppy and all but I heard about the band in a funky way. I sat next to Stacy Jones on a plane ride from Atlanta to Portland. He was one of the nicer seatmates I've ever had. He spent a lot of time playing with the baby in the seat in front of us. >> i really like this band. i went to a bunch of nina shows, and he was there for most of them. the first time i saw him, i didnt know who it was, but then my friends went to another show, called me on their cell, and were just lie "that guy yesterday was Stacy!!". im a huge veruca salt fan, so this was a big thing to me. they got me on the phone with him, and we were talkiing for a good 3-5 minutes about music (he really likes motely crue). then i went to another nina show later that week, and he was there. i was like "hey stacy, im the cell phone guy!", and he was like "oh yea, mike right?". he talked to us a little bit, since it was really cold outside (we were waiting around nina's bus) and he felt sorry. he went back into the bus, but he came back out about 15 minutes later, and grabbed a suitcase out from underneath the bus, opened it up, and handed me a promo copy of his cd. he did that all for us. i thought that was really nice of someone, and hey, he made himself a fan! the cd is really good (i guess im biased since ive actually met stacy and he's a really cool guy). ive met all the original members of Veruca Salt (as well as the new members). I have to say that Stacy (he was a replacement for Jim, nina's brother, that played the drums; i met him at one of nina's shows too) must be the nicest of all the Salts. mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 13:43:20 -0500 From: owner-support-system@smoe.org (by way of Jason Long ) Subject: Bounced message From: Dermich@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V4 #41 Jase's point is so sad, but true. I think the big-label music scene is >completely broken...dunno what any of us can do to turn it around. Honestly, I kind of have my doubts as well, but I feel like it's better to try to do something -- anything -- than just sit back and do nothing. If artists like Liz start to make a little more impact, maybe some of the bean-counters will take notice that art and commerce don't have to be mutually exclusive -- and maybe things will get better, at least for a while. I'm somewhat heartened by Aimee Mann's recent success. Those of us on the Mannlist received word a couple of days ago that the _Magnolia_ soundtrack just went gold this past week. So, there's that. A couple of years ago, it seemed doubtful she'd have the chance to get anything out at all, let alone sell that well. Assuming she wins at least one of the Grammys she's nominated for, it may mean another sales boost. Even _Bachelor No. 2_ isn't doing too bad, considering it was self-released. It's only been out for about nine months in stores (although it was available at her shows and through the web site last February), and it's now sold 175,000. It may not seem like a lot, but it does continue to sell steadily. At the same time, I was in the process of making a mix CD for a co-worker last night and was listening to songs from both of Jen Trynin's albums while deciding what to include. I ended up having the same thoughts I always do when I listen to her music -- namely, how the heck did she not find a much larger audience? If the quality of the music had anything to do with how successful it is commercially, she'd be huge. Ultimately, though, Warners did squat to even try to find her an audience -- which is why both albums are now out-of-print and it seems doubtful she'll ever release anything else. I don't know. I want to be optimistic and hope that through our efforts and those of Capitol, Liz's new album will be successful. Then again, things just suck so much right now -- it's almost enough to make Aimee Mann's lyric "Maybe everything is all for nothing" into a motto. I guess we'll see. I, myself, plan to do as much as I can and hope it'll make some difference. Cheers, Jase ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #42 ***********************************
