Is there somewhere >where we can officially >register our interest in this? Yes http://www.hollywoodandvine/mail/ It's the feedback page for Capitol Records New Media Division. Tell them what we want: an official website, updated Liz information, advance tracks for download, video compilations..... Also, as soon as I make some phone calls, I will be posting the names and e-mail addresses of Capitol/hollywoodandvine marketing executives, so that we can contact them directly. I actually think we can make an impact here.... "Hell Below, Stars Above" is a fanTAStic album, everyone - I highly give it my second when it comes out in March. I've had demos for this album for awhile now, and I too got an advanced copy of this AMAZING follow-up to one of the greatest albums ever "rubberneck". I've ranted about the Toadies before, and if anyone here has never heard them, I highly suggest you run out and pick up their first album "Rubberneck" - you won't be sorry. If you want a comparrison, probably the closest one would come to a PIXIES-ish sound, but they are completely different than the Pixies...although they too have a female bassist, much like the lovely Kim Deal for Pixies..hmm... anyway, Toadies are a complete treat - anyone with good taste in rock and thought-provoking lyrics should check them out. It's like Genius, pure rock songs in their most simple and primal form. Sorry, I get excited when people talk about the toadies!! I swear, I was ready to give up on them - their last release was 1994!!!!!!!!!!! It would be like Liz STILL not releasing a follow-up to Whip-SMart!!! later guys.. It's been great reading everyone's ideas about promoting the new Liz album, and it's kind of sparked another one for me. I thought I'd just run it by the list to see what everyone thinks. A while ago, I had proposed putting together a Liz newsletter for people who didn't necessarily wanted to be subscribed to the list itself (either because of the heavy volume of messages, time constraints, not interested in off-topic threads, etc.), but want to keep up to date on any Liz news. I'm still thinking of doing this, and promoting it on the mailing list site as a way for fans to get updates on upcoming releases, tour dates or television appearances. I'd set up a separate e-mail address for people to send a message to me to subscribe and to send the updates themselves from. It would be totally unofficial, of course, and not endorsed by either Liz or Capitol Records. I'd also appreciate it if those who maintain other Liz sites could link to a page where they could sign up for the updates from. The more awareness there is, the better. Some of Liz's more casual fans probably don't check out the web sites as often as we all do, so this would be a way to ensure they're aware of anything currently happening. Ideally, if at all possible, I'm hoping that between now and the new album's release, I'll be able to collect at least a couple thousand e-mail addresses. If these people all received notification of the album's release just beforehand, hopefully they'd be out in the record stores with the rest of us during the first week of release -- which would hopefully ensure a stronger debut chart position for the album. Prior to the album's release, I'm going to send along a list of record stores that participate in the SoundScan system. I know most of us would prefer supporting indie retailers, but relatively few such stores are participants, and as such, their sales are not counted towards where the album will place on the Billboard chart. I know a lot of you are probably wondering if the charts really matter that much that we should make such an effort. In a word, yes. If Liz debuts anywhere in the Top 40, it's going to result in more attention for the album, and possibly stronger support from the label. The music industry almost is becoming like the movie industry -- where first week showings determine how much continued support a release will get. If the album initially fizzles, they're not as likely to continue to sink a lot of money into promoting it. (Okay, I'm generalizing here -- this is in terms of labels in general. Capitol seem to be a little better than most.) So ... any thoughts? For the record, _Whip-Smart_ debuted at #27, _whitechocolatespaceegg_ at #34. How about we try to get this one in the Top 25? San Francisco's NPR station occasionally, when it takes a break from world music (not so good) and Leo Kottke (very good), uses 'Shatter' as filler music. Also, This American Life is a great show. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 21:14:00 EST From: AimeeRoadie@aol.com Subject: Re: Another idea... When I took a break from support-system and didn't check Mesmerizing, I really didn't know when Liz was going to be on VH-1 or in a particular mag or what not. That would be great for those of us like the former me. paige- ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #41 ***********************************
