My belief is that it won't hurt one tiny bit and will be a net positive thing. As way of anecdotal evidence, I downloaded The Toadies new album prerelease. It's not out until March officially, but it's already been posted to Usenet. In the 4 days since I downloaded it, I've listened to it 4 or 5 times. I cannot wait for it to come out so I can buy the CD, see them on tour, buy their shirts, buy their videos, buy their stickers. You get the picture. I've been to their website, downloaded all the video clips, read the recording logs and generally been indoctrinated into their boogie cult. HELL BELOW STARS ABOVE, my friends - he most consistently good solid rock album since WCSE. Just the title track (which I'm listening to on repeat over and over again) is worth the price of a CD. So, my illegal download didn't cost them a sale. It probably made extras, cuz I'll give this away as a gift. What it did was get me fired up, and turned me into a one man sales force. If you stream the new Liz album, it definitely won't cost a sale from me. I'm going to buy it no matter what. If its as good as I expect it to be, I'll become a sales rep at large for this as well. I will be able to e-mail links to that to my friends (I also give Liz as gifts) and otherwise encourage others to come to the light of pure Phairness. This is a good thing. Do it, do it, do it. Is there somewhere where we can officially register our interest in this? d - -- Dave Slusher dave_slusher@sff.net http://www.sff.net/people/dave_slusher/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2001 19:25:08 -0500 From: Dave Slusher Subject: Hi I just realized that I've been on this list at least 6 months and I think today is my first post. Hi y'all. Liz Phair fan since I first played EIG cuts on WREK 91.1 in Atlanta. I missed seeing her at La Luna in Portland OR last tour but my wife and I lurked outside and listened to the soundcheck, which was cool in its own way. Long live rock. d PS - American Hi-Fi was mentioned here a month or two ago. Not to be name-droppy and all but I heard about the band in a funky way. I sat next to Stacy Jones on a plane ride from Atlanta to Portland. He was one of the nicer seatmates I've ever had. He spent a lot of time playing with the baby in the seat in front of us. - -- Dave Slusher dave_slusher@sff.net http://www.sff.net/people/dave_slusher/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 22:58:29 -0500 From: "Just Another Girl" Subject: Internet promoting, etc. Internet promotion, what a concept with many different viewpoints. Personally, I think that any kind of promotion, short of handing people your completed album, is good. No matter what the album will end up on the internet eventually. People will have it on Napster, blah, blah. So if the company can control it somewhat, or have something to do with it being there, they might as well go for it. But, then again, I'm not in the business, so maybe that says something too... But this got me thinking of a type of underground touring, you know, as promotion. I go to school at Temple University and (I think it was) last spring semester, a band called Orbit came to campus. I don't know why, they just showed up. But it wasn't promoted around campus or anything (that I noticed). They just played for an hour or so. A rocking performance, right outside (I think it started to drizzle). People stopped to listen on their way to class, some people didn't go to class. They probably talked with students afterwards. But it got their music out there and I just thought it was very cool and just an interesting event. Orbit isn't even from PA or anywhere too near. Wouldn't that be awesome if Liz could do that, though? I know, a dream... But still, wow! Okay, I'll just leave with that thought. When WCSE was released, I was at the store at midnight to buy a tape copy for my car, and one for the CD player in the house. I went back the next day and bought enough copies for all of my friends (and age-appropriate relatives) as birthday or Christmas gifts. My Christmas shopping was 98% done before August was over. Obviously I was already a Liz fan, but the web cast just got me geared up for it. It also gave my non-Liz obsessed friends a reminder that there was a new album release soon, and gave my non-Liz friends a chance to hear her work (pre-album purchase or album gift) and pass on the link to their friends as well. Which brings me to my next point - I also think that the street team idea is a good one. I don't know what really that is or what is involved, but I would certainly help out in any way that I could. I also have a question for the Capitol employee: Do you know if there is ever any plan to release an official VHS tape of Liz's videos? I know that there are bootlegs on ebay that some dummy probably put together him/her self, (and from what I see they do sell), but I won't buy that. I would really appreciate having those, though. Maybe even with Liz talking about her music or videos in-between the videos themselves. I bet here are others who would buy it too, and she's done enough now to warrant a whole tape, I think. I know that other artists have done this, although I don't know how "profitable" those things are. Just an idea. (For example, I bought a tape of the movie Stealing Beauty because I knew that there is a Liz video on there. I didn't want to buy the movie itself, in fact I really hated the film and wished that I didn't have to buy it, but was willing to fork out the 15 bucks to have a good copy of one of Liz's videos.) Thanks! Liz doesn't really have an "official" web presence. Don't get me wrong -- she has lots of web presence -- and great sites, to boot -- like Ken's, etc., -- but no "official" site. To me, it gives the impression that she's - I don't know how to describe it -- intimidated by technology? Apathetic about keeping her fan base informed? didn't want publicity initially and now is either still hiding from it or thumbing her nose at it - -- that she can do fine without it, thank you very much? Just really technologically illiterate? I don't know. But I think it's a negative that she doesn't have an "official" web site, maintained and updated by her or someone for her. For example, look at Jill Sobule's, or Prince's, or Christina Aguilera's*, sites. These are three very different sites, but I think that they reflect the artists and their fans (and what they expect or would want) pretty well. {* = I am not condemning or condoning the music of any of these artists, but rather merely pointing out that these are useful sites that inform, entertain, and are interesting and useful, even if you don't like their music. New fans can learn more about someone they are interested in; old fans can stay informed and keep up with the artist.} And I think that's what a useful website should do for an artist. Promote them to new fans and keep long time fans informed and feeling appreciated. To give you another example of what I mean - I'd have to say the only one that I can think of that I don't care for is David Bowie's. The subscription thing just feels like a money maker more than a site that's there to inform fans because he appreciates having fans. I dunno. Just my 2 cents. Does that make sense? ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #40 ***********************************
