Personally, I don't think that having the album available as an internet stream would hurt sales at all. When I had my old computer and was still on a dial-up connection, I never used to bother much with any multimedia on the web, especially MP3s. Now that I have a cable internet connection and a much better computer, I have been sampling a fair amount of music by downloading from Napster. Usually what I download is music I've heard about, but am too gunshy to just go out and buy without hearing a song or two first. It has paid off -- to date, I've ended up going out and purchasing four albums I probably wouldn't have otherwise, based on downloading a few songs from each and having liked what I heard. At the same time, I have shied away from purchasing a few others after not being impressed by the songs I downloaded, so it works both ways. Ultimately, it really shouldn't hurt Liz, as long as her new material is as good or better than her past work. Also, I've noticed a lot of albums appearing on Napster well before their release dates. I received an advance copy of Stephen Malkmus' solo disc a few weeks ago, and just out of curiosity, I went to Napster to see if the songs had found their way there yet -- and every single song from the album was there, available for download. An internet stream really can't hurt Liz when the album will likely find its way to Napster prior to its release anyway. If people want to hear it ahead of time, they will find a way to do so. I think in terms of existing fans, even if we did have a chance to hear the album ahead of time online, it wouldn't stop any of us from going out and purchasing it as soon as it's released. Despite the fact that many of us already have the WCSE Sessions from Ken or Girly Sound bootlegs, it wouldn't stop most of us from going out and buying those if they were officially released. This would probably work the same way. The loyal fans will want the official release no matter what. It may hurt sales among those who haven't heard Liz before and are just checking her out for the first time. Either they may not like her music and opt out of taking the plunge and buying the album or they might decide that they like her music, but not enough to pay for it. The flip side is that they may be completely floored by her songs and end up buying her entire back catalogue. Ultimately, with Napster and the other file-sharing programs that are out there, people who want to get the music for free and not buy the album are going to find a way to do so no matter what. The internet stream might just provide exposure for Liz to be heard by people who haven't had the opportunity to check out her music before -- and given how she tends to be ignored by MTV and radio for the most part, Capitol really should take advantage of any other means for her music to be heard. I say go for it -- it really can't hurt. If Capitol are leery of streaming the entire album, propose streaming half of it instead -- or maybe offer a different song each day (which would hopefully keep people coming back to the site and would also build some anticipation for the record). Also, just out of curiosity, by saying 'should be coming out soon,' does that mean the album has been completed or is just about finished? Is Capitol still hoping for a mid-year release? Also, do you know if Capitol will also be handling the _Julie Johnson_ soundtrack Liz has recorded some songs for? Maybe you should try to arrange some tie-in between the promotion of the soundtrack and Liz's own album if this is the case. Just some thoughts... I know among all of us, we could probably come up with more ideas than you could possibly use -- I know we all want to see Liz do well with the new record. I know that you were asking in terms of internet promotion, but I'm just curious as to whether any thought as been given to putting together a volunteer street team to promote the album and put up displays and posters in record stores. I know Aimee Mann has had a fair amount of success with the efforts of her street team, and Liz may also benefit from something done on such a grassroots level. Visibility and consumer awareness are important. Also, the members of Aimee's list have put a lot of effort into ensuring her _Bachelor No. 2_ singles get some airplay. They've put together a list of radio stations in each market who have received promos or would be likely to play her music, along with contact numbers and e-mail addresses to request the songs. I wouldn't mind compiling this info and putting it up on the web for the members of this list to access -- we could maybe strategically go about requesting the song from any stations within our own areas, as well as have everyone request from stations who webcast (with these, it wouldn't matter whether or not we're within their broadcast range). Just some more food for thought. Okay. I am totally and completely lost. I have been reading the digests lately, but I literally have no idea when the Julie Johnson thing came up - or what the hell it is. So I have two simple questions - and I apologize because I am SOOOOO behind. 1) "Julie Johnson" is the title of a new movie - and Liz Phair has one new song in it - but the only thing we've heard of it so far is on a little trailer for the film, is this right - or have people heard more??? Is there more than one new song? Or is she gonna do something like Aimee Mann did for "Magnolia"?? (I lied. There are more than 2 questions. ) 2) I have also heard lots of threads regarding "what does everyone think of the new liz songs?" - Since we're on the topic - IS there any new advancement in her new album status??? A date??? a hazy date?? The last new thing I heard she put out was that "Miss Fortune" song, which is cute - but come on. I don't feel like it's a real "liz-byte", unless it's over 2mins long - so Miss Fortune was such a teazer. And I know there were some pics of her with the prezzie of capital records. Is the album still called "An Evening With.." or was that scraped long ago? So that's that. Where is the new album? and what the fuck is Julie Johnson? Angelo Badalamenti is cool though...remember Twin Peaks and all that David Lynch stuff with Juliee Cruise???? That was Angelo!!! He's neat -if you like that cymbal jazzy sound. laters. SOrry to double-"post", i don't do it often. Anyway, there is a song by Veruca Salt (the Louise-Veruca Salt) called "I Love You Too". Now, she sang this song live on her tour before the album came out - I saw them last may - and she said the song was going to be on Resolver, but it never was. It's a really ROCKIN' song - and I remember her playing it. There is a "snapping section" halfway through the song - and the chorus is just AWESOME!!Kinda comparable to the screaming chours in "taking europe" - Really great, classic Veruca Salt sound. ANyway, there are live mp3s of this song on napster and the sound isn't very good - and I cannot find a GOOD *studio*-version of it, - so HELP ME GOD! And there is for sure one out there, as Louise herself said it was gonna go on the album - and the album came out like a very shotwhile later..a few weeks later...so obviously there was a finished copy laying around that just didn't make the final cut. So if anyone has a good studio version of this MP3, can you please email it to me?? I would be forever thankful!!!!! I am currently in the process of taking all my Veruca Salt singles that I have accumulated over the years, and putting all the b-sides onto ONE Cd,cuz i am soo sick of changing them when i wanna hear multiple songs. I have about 17 B-side/Rare tracks...and they are all amazing!! If anyone wants a copy of this after it's done - email me and we can work something out - it really is like a WHOLE missing Veruca Salt album - a long one too! but I'd really like to include "I Love You Too" on this, because I think it's a great song. see ya soon...
